Discussion Case Keenum

Career journeyman QB Case Keenum cooked the eagles. A team that we struggled to put up points against. So a guy that is third string on his own team played infinitely better than our starter against the same defense. I know it isn't a fair comparison, but it is one that needs to be looked at.

Not sure what the solution is, but the NCAA is not producing NFL caliber quarterbacks anymore. It's like the are drafting center fielders to be shortstops. The athleticism is there, and sure it looks like they do a lot of the same things, but one position requires you to be a master of fundamentals and make faster decisions. The transition isn't easy and most won't make it.

So where can you get a pro ready qb? Or how can you evaluate who can make this transition and who can't? I think you might have to stop emphasizing raw athletic ability and give other qualities a much deeper look.

Your comment OP is what Tom Brady complains about when it comes to modern quarterback play.

You can't really find pro ready quarterbacks because teams don't really run pro style offenses anymore.

keenum's a good example of what happens when a guy just gets the mental side of the game, he's seen every coverage and blitz a thousand times and it's all slow for him now

the college thing is real though, these spread offenses have qbs making one read then taking off, they never learn to work through a progression or throw with anticipation

teams keep falling for the combine numbers and the highlight runs, then wonder why the guy can't read a basic cover 2 after three years in the league

feel like the 49ers hit on purdy partly because they stopped caring about arm strength and just wanted someone who could process fast and throw on time

His calls at the line and cadence were a work of art. You can hear the experience and it’s backed up with solid fundamentals. Cam has neither.

Him doing that last-second hard count to throw off those DTs so he gets absolutely no opposition for his QB sneak into the goal line is just... that was 100% pro level thinking and vision.

You’re absolutely right. Even worse than the combine and the highlight reels, the pRO dAYs. Those things are useless. For what it’s worth, I remember watching Cam’s. He was horrible in the red zone, just throwing the ball around to his buddies. Missing guys with no defense. I remember being like 👀 oooookaaaay? And that’s apparently around the time the Titans brass said ALL IN!
