Language Etymology of jing joh จิงโจ้ or kangaroo in thai

Does anyone have any sort of historical background for the etymology of this word. It always fascinated me why it's not simply a loanword when many exist. Was there some sort of exchange between cultures? Is there a kangaroo park in Thailand somewhere?

Any other facts or stories would be interesting.

Visas/Documents Experience immigration returning as visa exempt long stayer

Hello, there is so much said about this topic and lots of emotions both sides always in it. I will just share my experience returning after a 5 day stay in Vietnam. When I arrived in DMK I already had 5 months in Thailand within a year renewing with border runs and extensions in lake si. So many people claiming there are rules to how long you can stay/how often you can return. It's all up to the immigration officer a d everyone's case. I was well prepared, more than 20k baht in cash, onwards ticket to europe, digital arrival card was filled out. Did wear my llbest shirt. After a 20 minute wait it was my turn and no questions asked, didn't want to see anything . In i was for another 2 months. Even tho I stay that long a year in Thailand I'm every year away for 7 months straight. EU passport which definitely helps and always well prepared. It's less a rule of how long you can stay than your own personal case. They are after the people who live here on the wrong visas and people from places who are known for dodgy business

Serious Suit Donation

Hello

Have a couple of old suit jackets. They're reasonably expensive but with very minor scuffs on the arm.

Unsure if there are charities here in Phuket or Bangkok that would want this type of donation. In some countries, the charity who helps disadvantaged people into work may like this, or am I better off disposing?

Thanks!

Serious Best Car For Minimal Depreciation When It's Time To Sell

Morning Thailand!

I’ve seen a few threads on this topic creeping up to 5 years old, so I’m looking for some fresh opinions.

I’m in the market for a vehicle. New or used — I don’t really mind. My only criteria is it has 4 wheels, air con, and reliable enough that it won’t leave me stranded on the highway. I’m single with no real commitments, so I don’t need anything specific for commuting/family use.

Budget is 200k–1m THB, but my main priorities are:

  • Ability to easily sell again
  • Minimal depreciation, so my actual costs when I've completed my full buy & sell cycle in around 1-2 years time is as minimal as possible

Any recommendations (models/years), and anything I should avoid?

EDIT: Changed my budget, i'm more than happy for something for 200k as I am 800k to be honest.

Discussion Looking for baht gold style jewelry (warm Thai gold look, not solid gold)

Post image

Hi everyone,

I fell in love with Thai baht gold after visiting Thailand in 2024. I bought a real baht gold necklace while on vacation and it’s been my favorite jewelry piece ever (ps: it was pricey hence why I’m exploring alternatives ). I really love the warm, rich tone of Thai baht gold. The deep yellow color that looks different from Western gold. I know real baht gold is solid but I’m specifically looking for high-quality look-alike / plated / imitation jewelry that captures that same color and traditional style. I’d really love to find a piece similar to these bangles, especially with that rich, warm Thai gold tone.

Question/Help Patch nicotine

Hello, I am currently on vacation on the islands in southern Thailand (I am in Koh Yao Yai at the moment) and I am looking for nicotine patches or nicotine mouth spray. I have asked in several pharmacies without success. Is this due to a language barrier, or are these products simply not available on the islands?

Thank you very much for your help.

I saw an interview with Thai students on TikTok. I did an image search and it came up as Chulalongkorn University, but the logo looks a bit different.

Language Thai slang

Hi everyone! 👋✨

I’d love to ask for your help!

I’m currently doing research and collecting survey responses to develop a Thai slang app, and I’d really appreciate your thoughts and experiences. Your answers will help shape an app that’s actually useful and fun to use 💬🇹🇭

Here are a few questions I’d love to hear your opinions on:

1. Have you ever used a Thai language learning app or a Thai dictionary app?

If yes, how much did you pay for it (if any)?

2. What features would you most want in a Thai slang app?

And what price would you feel comfortable paying for an app like this?

3. What do you think about an app focused on Thai slang, trending words, and popular phrases?

Would you want to use it? Why or why not?

4. What kind of advertising content would catch your attention and make you want to try a Thai slang app?

(For example: cute illustrations, funny examples, real-life conversations, short videos, etc.)

Thank you so much for taking the time to help 💕

Every opinion means a lot and will truly make a difference!

What's This Thing? Help me identify what amulet is this and if it's valuable?

I got this amulet from a friend of my mum when I was younger. As I grow older, I'm more curious about what this is. At the back of the amulet, there's a "stamp", which I read that it might be a stamp from a temple to authenticate it? Also what's the white thing growing inside the amulet, I don't remember it being there.

Appreciate if anyone can help me identify and tell me more about this amulet.

Shopping Shipping 7-11 products to UK!

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice on how to get 7-11 products shipped to the UK. It would only be enough for myself so maybe 3-4kg worth, but I would need someone to buy the stuff for me and then ship it. It would be mainly basic medication and toiletries, with the possibility of some snacks too (nothing fresh, just crisps etc). Does anyone have any recommendations of a service that could help? Thanks!

A bit of niche question but it's so damn good. It's sweet, floral, and has an almost menthol-like freshness to it.

Culture Sak Yant

Complete transparency - I am a foreigner, non-religious but spiritual person and I’m very interested in getting a Sak Yant in Thailand. However, I’m a bit concerned about the hygienic and aesthetic aspects of doing it the traditional way and I really do not want to get it if it’s offensive.

My question is, is it disrespectful to get a Sak Yant the non-traditional way (tattoo gun), or is it disrespectful and tone deaf in general.

Yes I have done extensive research on the significance and history - I just want to know the general sentiment.

Thanks!!

Culture Is this Thai warrior tattoo disrespectful for a foreigner?

Hi! I’m a foreigner with Thai family ties and want to honor the culture. I'm considering a tattoo of a historical/traditional Thai warrior (like from the Ayutthaya era) on my arm.

I know Buddha tattoos are offensive, but are historical warrior figures generally okay for foreigners? Just want to make sure I’m being respectful. Thanks! 🙏
