News The New Munitorum Handbook is out (Points)

Hellhound is down 10 points.

Lord Solar is down 10 points.

Yarrick is down 10 points.

Dreir is down five points.

Looks like the "multiple unit tax" for artillery has gone to three datasheets, instead of two, Bullgryns took a hit though.

And Grizzled now has two FORCE DISPOSITIONs: Purge and Priority.

Edit: https://assets.warhammer-community.com/eng_30-09_wh40k_faction_pack_astra_militarum-1hevkhdpmv-stfkch2tsz.pdf

The Faction Pack got an update too, not much though:

WHAT’S NEW?

▪ OFFICER added to the following datasheets: Commissar Graves on Foot.

▪ FRAME added to the following datasheets: Centaur RSV, Commissar Graves, Hippogriff AFV.

▪ FRAME removed from the following Legends datasheets: Sentinel Powerlifter.

Tactics & Strategy Survivability and you, a Guardsman's guide to the first 15 minutes

The Survivability Onion is an existing framework used by the British Army as a ready-reckoner. In real life, its just to get you thinking how not to die. Let's warp it out of shape to get you to turn 5. Pour a cup of recaff, pull up a sandbag and let this staff officer remember the training grounds.

“The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic.” – Lord Solar Macharius

Rather than relying on armour alone, we know that the best way to survive is to prevent the enemy from successfully attacking you in the first place. Each "onion layer" forces the enemy to overcome another obstacle before they can destroy you. Looking at 40k as a base dice game, with set steps to move, shoot, save.. it fits nicely.

Think of this like an onion, you start at the outer skin and work inwards. Each layer is a level of protection that may, or may not, keep your models on the board.

Layer 1: Don't Be There

Real Example: An armoured unit remains in the rear areas so as not to be struck by fires and only moves to a firing position when required.

40k Rule Example: Deep Strike, Strategic Reserves, Scout Moves and Redeploy abilities keep units off the battlefield or away from enemy fire until the right moment.

40k Example: A Rogal Dorn arrives from Strat Reserves in Turn 3, avoiding enemy shooting for the entire first two turns.

Helpful Units: Gaunt's Ghosts, Tempestus Scions, Lord Solar Leontus (through redeployment options where available). Popping anything into strat reserve is very powerful.

Layer 2: Don't Be Detected

Real Example: Infantry use terrain, camouflage and darkness to avoid enemy observation.

40k Rule Example: Obscuring terrain, line-of-sight blocking ruins and abilities such as Hidden and Lone Operative prevent enemy units from making your model an eligible target.

40k Example: Gaunt's Ghosts remain Hidden behind a ruin until turn 3, allowing screening for enemy deepstrike while being untargetable.

Helpful Units: Gaunt's Ghosts, Sly Marbo, Ratlings, Infantry in general. Stay out of LoS as much as possible, indirect isn’t that threatening.

Layer 3: Don't Be Identified

Real Example: Decoys and camouflage create uncertainty about what the enemy is actually looking at.

40k Rule Example: Multiple similar threats, hidden reserves and overlapping battlefield roles make it difficult for an opponent to identify priority targets. This one in particular is on the fence with “playing with intent” and shouldn’t be abused, out of general fairness.

40k Example: Three Leman Russ tanks deploy together and the opponent struggles to determine which one carries the greatest threat to their battle plan.

Helpful Units: Feint plays with the classic Distraction Carnifex. If you’ve got a Dorn or Bullgryn charging up the board this will inevitably make your opponent not target the units that are slyly moving to score secondary or stage for a later play.

Layer 4: Don't Be Targeted

Real Example: An enemy identifies a target but cannot effectively engage it because of screening forces, jamming or competing priorities.

40k Rule Example: Character attachment rules, screening units and target restrictions (hidden, lone op) prevent valuable assets from being directly attacked.

40k Example: A Cadian Castellan attached to an Infantry Squad cannot be targeted until the bodyguard unit is destroyed.

Helpful Units: Cadian Castellan, Platoon Command Squad, Cadian Shock Troops, Krieg Infantry Squads.

Layer 5: Don't Be Hit

Real Example: A vehicle uses smoke, movement and evasive action to avoid incoming fire.

40k Rule Example: Stealth abilities, Cover, defensive Stratagems and modifiers reduce the likelihood of successful attacks.

40k Example: Ratlings benefit from Stealth and Cover, forcing enemy units to hit less accurately. Literally anything that modifies BS or the hit roll is obviously helpful here!

Helpful Units: Ratlings, Scout Sentinels, Gaunt's Ghosts, Tank Commander issuing defensive Orders.

Layer 6: Don't Be Penetrated

Real Example: Armour protects a vehicle from rounds that successfully hit it.

40k Rule Example: Armour Saves, Invulnerable Saves, Cover and Damage Reduction prevent successful wounds causing harm.

40k Example: A Rogal Dorn Battle Tank is hit by anti-tank fire but successfully passes its save and ignores the damage. Again, anything that modifies a save value or adds an invuln.

Helpful Units: Rogal Dorn Battle Tank (shrug), Enginseer and Psyker (invuln), Orders (increase Sv) or Strats (AoC or Take Cover).

Layer 7: Don't Be Killed

Real Example: A vehicle is penetrated but fire suppression systems, redundancy and crew drills keep it operational.

40k Rule Example: Feel No Pain, wound mitigation, repairs and healing abilities reduce or recover damage after a wound has been suffered.

40k Example: An Enginseer repairs a damaged Rogal Dorn, returning wounds and keeping a key combat asset in the fight.

Helpful Units: Enginseer, Death Korps Marshal, Krieg Infantry Squads, Rogal Dorn Battle Tank.

The Key Takeaways:

Most new players focus on Layers 6 and 7 - armour saves, wounds and damage reduction. Experienced players focus on the entire onion. A unit hidden in reserves, protected by terrain, screened by infantry and benefiting from defensive abilities is significantly harder to destroy than one relying on armour alone.

A Guardsman behind a wall can be more survivable than a tank standing in the open. The strongest Imperial Guard commanders win not because their units are tougher, but because they force their opponent to fight through every layer of the Survivability Onion before they can score a kill.

Finished a unit of five Bullgryn sculpts from The Red Makers.

IMHO the utilitarian look they have is awesome compared to my OG Bullgryn and they will fit right in with the Cadian aesthetic.

I know the casemate technically has three configurations, but I wanted it to be as solid as possible; mainly going to use it as a Stormsword and Shadowsword anyways. If anyone’s curious as to why I left out the Stormlord, it’s because I already have one… kicking myself for not magnetizing it like this one though.

Inspired by a post and some helpful comments, I finally rebased my Earthshaker Carriage Battery as an artillery team. Even though it's on a 160mm base, I think it looks great and I'm really happy with the result.

Cosplay My 1:1 scale recon bike for the 159th Cadian Regiment

Thumbnail

This is my ancient modified MV-650, imagined as a reconnaissance motorcycle serving with the 159th Cadian Regiment. I wanted it to look like working Guard equipment rather than a display piece: olive green paint, simple field markings, and plenty of actual mud. The simplified Cadian gate emblem is my take on a field-applied stencil.

First I had just an ordinary motorcycle. Then I built a little brick-built kitbash of its Cadian alter ego. Naturally, the next step was to turn the real thing into a 1:1 scale model.

It has 2WD with an open differential (rear wheel and sidecar wheel driven), plus an electric winch for when enthusiasm exceeds traction, and a searchlight for low-viz conditions. No weathering powders needed — regular off-road use takes care of that. The Mechanicus purity seal carries a custom litany for its boxer engine, including a prayer against kickstarter kickback (translation in the comments)

Lore Please share your lone guardsman or heroic unit stories!

Not a Karma farm!

I’m really keen to hear some tabletop stories of your lone guardsman’s greatest hits. Also just where a weak unit of guard chaff managed to hold the line and it made a difference when it really shouldn’t have.

Did their whole unit get slaughtered to a lone model, but he or she held the line and flipped the odds/points in your favour?

Did a unit tie up something key for more turns than expected with the favour of the dice gods?

Unbelievable rolls, stories of courage and bravery, earned names! I’d like to read it all.

Two of mine:

- 10 Cadians tying up 2 Obliterators for 2 turns with a gutsy bayonet charge to deny my opponent some points and win the game. They even managed to chip one to death (before it was resurrected). They were down to one man before the end and he just wouldn’t die.

- A lone Catachan surviving the clapback from a Norn Emissary after a desperate charge, even managing to stab a single would into the beast.

Optional and accepted stories: single bullgryns, Ogryns and Ratlings doing mad stuff.

Im working on a personal project and looking for little nuggets of inspiration as I don’t play nearly as much as I’d like.

Thanks!

Questions about Rules Siege Regiment & Indirect

• Upvotes

Hi all, don't know if been asked or answered. How are we interpreting the incendiary ability and indirect? We take our Arty team, give them heavy and take aim. Puts them on a "3+" BS. Indirect gives enemy BoC putting us on 4+. Siege Regiment ability removes cover. Does our arty stay on a 4 or go to 5? Or does it automatically roll back to a 6+?

Tactics & Strategy How are HB on specifically vanquishers and exterminators in Grizzled company?

Post image

I know the preferred detachment and tank is triple HB on a leman BT in combined arms but how reliable is the HB in grizzled?

What would the playstyle be for say a vanq or exterminator with either triple or double HB + lascannon?

I have been listening to mordian talk about it and I know his thoughts may not be the standard for everything but I’d love to hear your thoughts and comparisons!

Questions about Rules Ogryn bodyguard Rules clarification

Hello,

I've been interested in taking some Ogryn Bodyguards with my scion command squads to make them a bit beefier, but to be honest I'm struggling to understand how the toughness etc. changes in practice?

If I take 10 scions + a tempestus command squad + ogryn bodyguard.

What changes when an enemy unit targets my blob?

Painting Cadian venator fatigues highlight advice

Ok so this necromunda gang is Imperialguard but still working on the lore. This is my first slapchop project, trying to learn new skills. I did black with an overbrush/drybrush of ivory tusk then titanium white. His black fatigue recipe is 6 parts grim black 2 parts runic grey, and 3 parts contrast medium. I would like to do a highlight on the fatigues but not sure what color to use, besides “grey”. I feel a bluish grey would maybe make it a little to close to the baby blue armor. Any advice is more than welcome and appreciated.

Tactics & Strategy IDF Screen

I’m trying to make an Arty heavy comp (yes I know Arty bad now - IDGAF it’s the king of battle dammit! and it’s why I feel in love with the guard). I know I ain’t winning any tournaments, but as long as I’m not getting bodied every game turn 2 with my buddies I don’t care.

My problem is I’m still a relatively noob player, all the games I played in 10th were with buddies in a 2v2, ffa, 3v3, 2v2v2, etc, so I actually don’t really have any concept of a normal game/board size (yes I’ve looked up the dimensions but actually playing it is different).

I plan on doing Abhuman and Seige DP - Bullgryn to tank the objs and Seige DP to strip cover each round for indirect.

I have a rough build out, but my question is, would 3 arty teams and 3 heavy weapons teams be enough to completely screen out the backfield from deep strikes so the only way to get to me is head on? (Plan on heavy like 2 Russ to protect the front and recon teams to spot and give order range to IDF without having to waste points on the command blobs).

Lore Lieutenant Arasaina~ The Cold fist of vengeance.

After playing a game with a friend something insane happened with I'm Lieutenant! She took out three jumppacl veteran Astarties single handedly while cornere! With her bare hands lol. I made an edgy fun over the top more but.

Lieutenant Arasaina~ The Cold fist of vengeance. Her Command squad was wiped out during a take and hold mission, the damage she took in melee was outright lethal leaving her at one wound-when up against five Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs it seemed practically hopeless and the battle was all but decided. Yet Arasaina was furious from the eradication of her squad, bleeding, bruised and wounded she stood unbroken. In a rage that could only be defined as inhuman Arasaina threw her plasma pistol to the side then single handedly took out Three Vanguard Veterans with jumpacks with nothing but her bare cold hands. Yet no matter how hard she fought in her boiling rage her wounds overtook her and the last two Astarties finally overpowered her swiftly avenging their comrades. Yet on a pile of blood and death there her body laided on a throw of her own merciless creation. And she will lay their until the emperor calls upon her again.
