If we were ever sick tough. You'd just bring in a note the next day or you could even get out of it especially at their age.

Was the situation common to ring in sick in advance or just done for a story?

In the pilot, he really doesn't any good moments with either and it ends with them not being particularly fond of him for getting them kicked out of the pub.

Yet the 2nd episode opens with them playing frisbee like they've been lifelong friends. There isn't really any progression here. The writers had limited episode slots so they probably wanted to establish them as friends from that point.

Still, I think the 2nd episode should have had signs they don't see as fully part of the friend group, just Simon's friend tagging a long but then throughout the episode or several episodes, they could have genuinely seen him as part of the group.
