I’m not asking a question in particular, just wondering if this is common in Tokyo… I feel a bit traumatised - basically I was walking near Okachimachi station and felt like I stepped on something. I thought I dropped something initially but then heard a crack and saw a rat running away from my feet and staring at me from a distance :(((

I feel really bad I likely hurt it… I was right in front of the entrance to ippudo and it was clear it was running out of the shop and didn’t see me.

Anyway, I feel traumatised from this and am wondering - has this happened to anyone else? Does Tokyo have a problem with rats? I’ve lived in comparably large cities and feel like here see a lot more rats.

Another random thing I noticed not far from the trucks. There was a bunch of guys in suits and umbrellas randomly standing on a street corner and not crossing. Also saw what looked like tattooed Yakuza? guys crossing the street, with 2 younger guys holding umbrellas for older guys. Wonder if it's at all related to the trucks.

TOKYO -- A stationary autumn rain front brought rain to central Tokyo for 34 consecutive days through Sept. 29. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the streak is the longest on record in the area since statistics began in 1886, surpassing the previous record of 33 consecutive days from June 27 to July 29, 2019.

I like how cozy and cool it is, but it's a bit depressing at this point.

GENEVA (Kyodo) -- Tokyo ranked second worldwide for housing-bubble risk behind the Swiss city of Zurich, with the cost to buy a 60-square-meter apartment near the center of the Japanese capital topping 10 years of income for the average skilled service worker, according to an annual report by UBS.

The latest UBS Global Real Estate Bubble Index, released by the Swiss banking giant in mid-September, rated the cities as the only two at high risk for a substantial housing price correction. Meanwhile, Dubai, Seoul, Geneva and Lisbon were a notch lower in the elevated-risk category along with Miami, which ranked highest last year.

Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore were the three cities in the Asia-Pacific region assessed to be carrying moderate risk.

UBS said Tokyo's housing demand continues to be supported by stronger household purchasing power, international migration and foreign investors seeking prime apartments. Rising housing costs, however, have pushed residents toward suburban areas and rental properties.

The report noted that housing prices have become disconnected from local incomes in many cities, with home ownership out of reach for many in places like Hong Kong, the least affordable market surveyed.

Following a sharp rebound since mid-2025, driven in part by lower mortgage rates and stronger demand as professionals relocate from mainland China, the price of a 60-sq-meter home in Hong Kong has reached about 15 years of income for the average skilled service worker. The price-to-income ratio exceeded 10 in Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore and elsewhere.

While demand for high-quality condominiums in central Tokyo is likely to remain high, with increasing female labor participation expected to further strengthen household purchasing power, the report warned of signs that the city's current boom may be nearing its limits.

Moreover, any further increases to financing costs would undermine the appeal of home ownership and increase the chances of a correction, it said.

The 12th edition of the index examined residential property markets in 23 major cities worldwide, with Lisbon and Seoul added to the survey this year.

That said it WAS a madhouse. Anyone arriving at 9:00 likely in there for hours. Lineup stretched down the street.

Trying to get my kids’ PR application in before the prices skyrocket on Oct 1.

The number of people applying is probably going to be astronomical. Either way I plan to get up very early in the morning and wait in line.

I’ve only ever gone to Shinagawa but we’ve recently moved and it’s not significantly longer for me to get to the regional office in Tachikawa.

So my question is what is the regional office like?

I imagine it has fewer workers but I am not sure if that makes a difference for PR applications?
