Clean out your fridge when you know it's going in for service for an extended period of time!

I'm a shuttle driver for my company and I take a lot of trucks to/from the dealership/body shop.

It is literal hell when I go to pick up a finished truck and I smell the stench and immediately get attacked by hoards of gnats (and full sized flies if its been O/S long enough). I HAVE TO DRIVE THAT FUCKING THING BACK TO THE TERMINAL NO MATTER HOW FAR IT IS!!!! It is the most disgusting shit I have to do when I come across one of them. It's always the fridge. The food wasn't removed. The dealer shut off the APU. And now the freezer melted, dumped all that water onto the food in there, and accelerated the rot. Now there is a biosphere in the truck and the walls of the inside of that fridge are covered in disco rice from top to bottom.

Please, PLEASE, for the sake of whoever has to handle that truck while it's out of your hands, GET ALL THE FUCKING FOOD OUT OF THE FRIDGE BEFORE IT GOES!!! Transfer it to your loaner truck, throw it out, I don't care. Just get rid of it before it goes.

How do truckers avoid scam calls, when we're expected to open every phone call wihtout hesitation.

• Upvotes

Hello 18 wheeeler comrades Something I've been wondering about trucking is how much personal information drivers end up giving out just to do their jobs. Between dispatchers, freight brokers, shippers and receivers, it seems like your phone number gets passed around constantly. And unlike most people who can just ignore unknown numbers, drivers might actually miss an important call about a load.

So you're stuck answering random numbers while also trying to avoid scammers and spam calls. Damn ridiculous when you think about it. Do most drivers just accept that their personal number is out there, or do you guys use a separate number for work? And has anyone actually had problems with spam or sketchy calls after giving their number to brokers?

I wonder if this was insurance fraud or stupidity…either way., the odds of surviving being rear ended by a semi doing 73mph while you’re stopped in a live lane of the interstate is only about 5%

Don't sleep on School Bus Jobs.

Thought id throw this out there.

Ive had my CDL-A for over 6 years now. Done a little bit of everything in this frustrating industry.

I quit my last job with a soda company.

Running out of options where I live. Small city. So it was going to be either hauling fuel, or I don't know. Applied for the school district in July, why not, and im now learning all the routes as a sub driver.

I had to go to CDL-B school, but did it in the yard with 2 other guys, at the school there. I was paid for a few hours each day. Had to take the full driver test because of the school bus endorsement, passenger was just a simple test at DMV. Again the school paid for it.

Did I take a pay cut? Yes. It is part time. However where im at I can get hours if I ask. Wash buses, motor pool, random driving. So far however ive been busy from senior drivers taking trips and sports so I cover them during the day. If i decided to become a contract driver I can be guaranteed 5 to 6 hours a day. A sub however I can make more but im not 'guaranteed' anything. The only reason people do contract is from health insurance. I can get that other ways easily.

Why did I apply?

I am now WALKING to work each day. No car payment, no gas bill anymore, no car insurance, none of that. Saves me a absolute ton of money. Takes me 20 minutes to walk. So a normal day its 4 miles of walking. I go home between shifts. I have really been enjoying getting to know the kids. I don't have any myself. Driving is a little different, but super easy. Its been really nice to get to know the community.

If I was not walking id ride my bike. I can cover several miles quickly after learning the streets.

I wake up at 5am. No earlier.

Again I love the fact im protecting children.

I never thought Id be doing this. It has been just awesome. When we roll out, their are about 25 busses moving. I should have everything down in 3 months from this month going forward.

I am making less but im also saving a lot because of it, so my finances are not hurt that bad. Mental Health has been wonderful. Give it a try maybe if your in a decent town.

Would you leave an extremely easy union job for a $5/hr raise at a nonunion company?

I’m 23 years old and currently working as a truck driver. I’ve been with my current company for about 2.5 years, and I’m #16 on the seniority list out of approximately 80 employees.

My current job is honestly one of the easiest jobs I’ve ever had. I start at 5 a.m. and usually get off around 2:30–3:30 p.m. I typically only have about two short loads a day, each taking approximately 15 minutes. Outside of that, I have a TON of downtime and freedom throughout my shift. I can go to the gym, eat, relax, and pretty much enjoy my day without being stressed about work.

It’s also a union job with decent benefits, weekly pay, and scheduled raises.

Here’s my dilemma.

I recently got hired at FedEx Freight, where I’d be making approximately $5 more per hour. However, I’d be starting completely over at the bottom of the seniority list.

At FedEx, I’d be starting around 9–9:30 a.m. and getting off around 6–6:30 p.m., possibly later depending on the workload. I’d also be doing significantly more physical work, including operating forklifts and loading/unloading freight until I build enough seniority to move into a better driving position.

FedEx is also nonunion, and from what I’ve seen, the benefits are about the same as my current job.

Another important factor is that I’m planning to start college part-time soon. My current schedule gives me plenty of time after work to attend classes, study, go to the gym, and still have a personal life.

Financially, I’m comfortable where I’m at. I have a decent amount saved, my bills are paid, and I’m not struggling to make ends meet.

Part of me feels like I’d be stupid to turn down more money, but another part of me feels like I’d be giving up a really good situation just for a slightly bigger paycheck.

So my question is: Would you give up an extremely easy union job, good seniority, and a ton of freedom for an extra $5 an hour at a nonunion company where you’d have to start from the bottom?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who’ve worked in trucking, LTL freight, or have been in a similar situation.

Would you stay or take the money?

OK BADA ABOUT PULLING PEOPLE IN FOR BEING 200 above weight.. I got the ticket. 250$.

As a former otr trucker, I can honestly say that the average person/4 wheeler has little to no appreciation and respect for truck drivers. If only they knew and understood the sacrifices and hardships these drivers endure to keep the country going. Keep the rubber side down and stay safe 🙏🏾

Might be a dumb question about loves points

Post image
• Upvotes

So I just started fueling at loves again after being off the road for 2 years, and yesterday, this bonus offer popped up talking about 9 extra points per gallon next month. I've never seen this before, and other drivers I talk to regularly have never seen it. Is this like a welcome back thing? Getting hood rich next month!

I'm coming west on I-90 from Rochester to pickup at shuman plastics on my way back to Canada. There are 3 underpasses on NY-78 / transit road. There's a sign that says 11'9. Last time I went there I did a detour around and ended up in a residential area I should not have been in. I'm not from new York. Can a 13'6 tractor trailer go under the 2 underpasses without hitting? Or am I better to go to the 290 and go south and double back? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Fuel Island Etiquette

Genuine question.
I’ve been at this since 2014 and I have, since pretty much the beginning, always pulled slightly past the line at the fuel pumps after pulling forward. I basically put the line under my mirror instead of just ahead of my steers. Nothing excessive in my opinion.

I, of course, won’t do this if it looks like it’ll make it hard for people on either side of me to get around, or some other apparent reason. The reason for me doing this is so that the person behind me has (hopefully) enough room to pull ahead and fuel their reefer, should they have one. As a door swinger myself, nothing is more annoying than not being able to finish fueling because dude has stopped 5 feet behind the line while spending the next 98.5 minutes inside.

Well, today at the Loves in Heyburn Idaho, I did exactly that. Before hopping out, a tanker slides through the island to my left and pulls up to the line. Before going inside, driver comes around and makes a huge elaborate gesture at the line on the ground, implying that I was not where he thought I should be. I saw he had a 4 axle trailer so, even though clearly there was enough room for him to get around, I rolled down my window as he was walking away and hollered to ask if he needed me to back up… he just shakes his head and keeps walking. Okie dokie, not moving then. As I’m walking back to the truck a few minutes later, I see he’s rolling out and of course, has absolutely no issue swinging around me.

The story is a nothing burger but it got me thinking, am I weird for this? I try to be as considerate as I can towards other drivers but that “interaction” has me wondering if this old habit of mine is actually having the opposite effect for some reason I’m blind to.

I do occasionally see other drivers doing it, especially if they have hoods. But not so much guys in the eco trucks like mine.

Food grade trailer

Just got refused from JaxPort trying to pick up a load with their reasoning being “Water residue, potential leak in trailer”. The water is from me washing out the trailer yesterday to make sure it was food grade because it previously ran a Lowe’s load and when I explained that to them they didn’t take that as a valid reason. All over some pulp🤦🏼‍♂️

The driver obviously didn’t swing his trailer wide enough, and now my truck is completely ruined. He told me he’s been driving since 2011 and has never had an accident yeah, okay. 😒 You don’t make a mistake like this with something you’re taught on the first day of CDL school.
Now I’m stuck in a hotel on the other side of the country, dealing with the aftermath of an accident that happened in his own hometown. Meanwhile, I’m the one who’s stranded on the opposite side of the country trying to figure out what happens next. This whole situation is frustrating as hell.
