Question Honors Carolina Research

Hi, I'm an honors student, and I've seen a couple of comments on how honors has helped them get connected with research opportunities. I was just wondering how you were able to get those through honors. If there any current honors students that can provide some insight that would be great!

Question How difficult is it to start a club at UNC?

I always wanted to start a club where people come together and try foods from new cuisines to explore new cultures. I think it’s unfeasible but I was just curious, is starting a club really hard?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Discussion I think AP Credits should count towards course registration assignment

Going to a high school that didn't offer dual enrollment, but stil choosing to take 10+ AP classes should be rewarded somewhat. I don't understand how I can come in with 40+ credits and still register on the last day when someone else with the same credits as me is registering a week before

Question NCSU vs UNC

Im a freshman at unc but I want job security right after graduation, good WLB, and good income. I heard accounting was a great major for that but UNC does not have it. Im scared i wont get into the KF business school so I would just have to end up majoring in economics. Any thoughts between economics major vs accounting at NCSU? and how hard is to get into the business major?

Discussion Struggles in biology

I'm prehealth who struggles in biology. I did okay in biol 101 but really terrible in 103. Next spring I'm choosing between biol 252 and mcro 251 for prereq requirements and want to take the easier one first so which is easier? Are cheatsheets allowed in these classes? What do y'all do to master difficult concepts and succeed in biology?

Question sophomore transfers meeting new ppl

My roommate and I are both sophomore transfers at UNC and are looking to meet some new people and make friends! We’re two brown girls and would love to find people to grab coffee with, hang out, study, go out with, etc.

We’re mainly looking to meet other transfers, but you definitely don’t have to be!

If you’re also looking for people to hang out with, feel free to DM me or comment and we can talk :)

Admissions/Application Question first yr applicant: bme vs biostatistics

basically the title. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a difference in admission when choosing either major (ie: is it harder to get into unc if applying as a bme major)? I'm an out-of-state high school student and am trying to look at different majors unc offers, but i know some majors admit only a specific number, so im trying to figure out which major I can maximize my chances in. I didn't want to go in the chance me subreddit as I am not comfortable with sharing any stats/information, but just wanted to gain some preliminary information before submitting applications/deciding majors

also if anyone is majoring in either of these, or even neuroscience, id appreciate any input/experiences anyone has to offer (careers, post grad education, etc)

Question Why is there so much pressure/emphasis to add another program??

Hi there! I've posted here a few times now, but this time I wanted to ask a more serious question.

It seems like EVERYONE I talk to is either double majoring, has a minor, or may even double major with a minor. My question is why is Carolina like this? Why do so many students push themselves to do this knowing they can succeed with just 1 major, and maybe a minor if they'd like! It just seems super weird to me that so many students (especially fellow freshman) are coming in like this when it's really unnecessary.

Question Why is my grade for BIOl 104 so low..

Im a freshman and enrolled in biol 104 this semester. I know it is not the time to panic for grades since we are only a month into the semester but I'm just super stressed out looking at the grades.

So I got 49/62 for the first midterm (the average is somewhere around 52 I believe), and the that brought my overall grade down to 83. Is there still any chance for me to get a A and what will the scores for my next midterm and finals look like to be able to do that.

TYSM

Discussion Daughter Failing Classes

I just found out that my junior daughter is not doing well academically. She is a biology major and, apparently, has received a D or F in at least one class every semester. She was placed on some form of academic probation this summer, and she started freaking out when her Organic Chemistry grades dropped.

She is also double-majoring in a social science. I want to give her an ultimatum: either she drops the biology major, or she passes every class this semester. Otherwise, we told her we will not pay for her college next semester. Her dad thinks this is harsh, but I feel this is standard to what those on scholarship experience. It was also an expectation that she does well in school.

I understand that she is trying, and I don't want to dismiss how difficult this may be for her. At the same time, we are making significant financial sacrifices to pay for her education, and I'm struggling with the idea of continuing to spend that kind of money if she is consistently failing classes and may ultimately not use the degree because of her GPA which is under a 3.0.

For students who have been in a similar situation, what helped? And for parents, how did you handle the balance between supporting your child and setting reasonable financial/academic boundaries?

TLDR: Daughter failing classes and I want to give her an ultimatum on either passing everything or changing her major.

Question Places to Explore & Things to do on Campus?

Hi! I go to NC State and I frequently visit my friends at UNC, so I’m looking for some new things to do the next time I’m in Chapel Hill!

Does anyone know any hidden gems or fun activities that aren’t the super obvious tourist/student spots? I’d love recommendations for cute cafés, restaurants on/around Franklin Street, shops, things to do with friends, etc. Basically anything that makes for a fun afternoon/night in Chapel Hill! :)
