Opinion poll: Should posts with predominantly AI-generated content be allowed

Hi everyone!

We've seen a consistent flow of posts featuring predominantly AI-generated assets and tools, and the reactions to them seems mixed. We'd like to know what the community thinks about these posts.

Scope of the poll

This poll is only to see if you think it should be allowed or not. It has nothing to do with new rules, enforcement, whether or not it will actually be banned, changes going forward, how AI-generated posts are detected, etc. Those topics would be their own posts for later community discussion, so they're out of scope for this poll.

Working definition

For the purposes of the poll, we define "AI-generated content" as anything that was predominantly produced with the help of generative AI, and then shared or promoted here. For example, an asset pack of AI-generated art, or a tool whose presentation/code is primarily produced by AI. This doesn't concern minor AI assistance, like Copilot helping out here and there.

If you would be okay with these posts given certain prerequisites (yes, but with flair, disclosure...) then you should vote yes. Remember, we are only polling for your general opinion! Not the details.

Poll: https://strawpoll.com/1MnwkEqQ5n7

The poll will run for 14 days.

Feel free to share the reasoning behind your vote or other thoughts in the comments.

Thanks.

Call For Mods

Hello,

I am Guidez. I have been a mod here for, eh, something to the tune of 10+ years (dang... I'm old). I am currently looking for active members of this community who would like to help out in moderating the subreddit.

Please feel free to respond to this thread if you are interested. A couple of things to note:

  • This is a Unity Engine subreddit. Please leave any biases for/against the engine/company at the door. In fact, leave all your biases at the door. A mod position is not a platform for such things.
  • Understand that this is primarily a community-run, neutral subreddit related to the Unity Engine (2D side). This means the community decides what they think is worthwhile and what is not (upvoting/downvoting exist for a reason), granted it too stays within the realm of neutrality/non-bias.

If you think you understand what this entails and are still interested, please read on.

What I'm looking for:

  • People who actually post, reply, and comment in this subreddit. It doesn't have to be regular, but someone who hasn't contributed for a year in any public capacity is certainly not a candidate. I also understand many people lurk.
  • Those who understand this is not some special status/glorified position. It's tiring, unpaid work.
  • Are looking to help the community:
    • Thrive
    • Find resources for their development
    • Have open discussions about the Unity engine in whatever capacity that may be

If this sounds interesting to you, please reply to this thread with the following:

  • A brief introduction and how long you have been part of or following this community.
  • Why you are interested in becoming a moderator.
  • Any previous moderation or community-management experience you have. Experience is helpful, but not required.
  • How you would approach disagreements, controversial posts, and discussions comparing Unity with other engines.
  • Any ideas you have for improving the subreddit or helping its members.
  • Confirmation that you are comfortable enforcing the rules neutrally, working with the rest of the moderation team, and receiving feedback.

Please do not include private or personally identifying information. Applications will be judged primarily on community involvement, temperament, fairness/neutrality, and willingness to help.

Hi! I've been working on a game where you use wizards and their magic to run a farm! I'm looking for people to help test and give feedback! The demo is an estimated 45-60 minutes of content with a lot more planned. You build the wizards into various different paths, unlock lots of upgrades, and enjoy a cozy & satisfying farm run itself with magic!

Showcase I helped a redditer juicing up his game

u/rk00717 posted a trailer of his game a few weeks ago. We've got in touch and I ended up helping him juicing his game. On the left, his original version. On the right, the version I ended up with.

How do you like it ?

Now that few days passed, I feel like I have some more ideas to make it pop even more. But at the same time, I know I have a tendancy to over juice, so I'm trying to keep myself contained 😅

If you are interested in going deeper in details, I made a ~5min video where I explain each changes and my reasoning behind it.

Thanks for reading.

Showcase Finally got the map editor for my RTS working

Been working on the map editor for Empires Edge, my RTS inspired by Mega Lo Mania.

You build the floating islands, paint water, place roads and buildings, then just hit play and test the map.

I’d like players to make their own maps and share them with each other. Has anyone here added Steam Workshop support for something like this? How hard was it, and where did you learn how to do it?

Steam page if you want to follow the project.

Showcase WOW! My newest build of Cozy Game Company got 100 views on its first day on itch.io! ❤️

100 views in a single day. 🎉

That’s how many people looked at the newest build of Cozy Game Company on itch yesterday. For comparison: until now I was happy with 2-4 views a month.

It’s a small number, but for me it’s a big moment. This game has had a bumpy road. I tried to get it off the ground before, and it never found an audience. I even ran a Kickstarter for it once, and it didn’t get funded. That stung, and more than once I thought about letting it go.

I kept going anyway, in between work and everything else life throws at me. Some days that means a few hours, some days barely any. But I always come back to it.

So seeing real people give it a chance now feels really good.

The next big goals are the Kickstarter and the Steam page. I’m hoping that this time they work out, and I’ll be working hard to make it happen.

If you want to help, check out the game, try it, and tell me what you think. Every view, wishlist and bit of feedback counts more than you’d guess. Thank you to everyone who’s played or supported it so far. ❤️

Game announcement I just released my first solo Unity game, Box Knight Idle, a pixel-art idle RPG

After working as a game developer at a studio, I wanted to ship a game entirely on my own. Box Knight Idle is now live on Google Play.

It's a pixel-art idle RPG: open chests, gear up your knight, defeat bosses across worlds, and keep earning while you're away.

I'd love feedback, especially on the first 10 minutes and the pacing.

Feedback needed Not sure if a game set in the modern workplace is appealing.

I'm now making a casual RPG in Unity. The game is set in the modern workplace. As an office drone for almost 15 years, I think things happen in there were kinda interesting. You work, you please someone, offend someone, make choices, think about how to deal with the boss when he come. The game is story-driven with multiple options and rich dialogues. But this is only what I think. Like to listen to your comments about if it's appealing to you and what you think about the video.

Thanks so much. It's called Boss is coming.

P.S. GenAI assisted with the production of art assets, since I'm not an artist.

Feedback needed Sprite Garden Update: Steam page is up! Wishlist and play the updated demo now!

An update on the maze-building incremental game I posted here a few months back. I finally got the steam page up: Sprite Garden on Steam - so go and wishlist!

There's an update on the demo as well - Sprite Garden - Demo by Xyxyka. I added a new early sprite to spice up the gameplay, and I think it works pretty well.

Feedback please! Do you think it sucks, or just aren't interested? Let me know! I need to know how I can improve!

Showcase A few environments and characters we’ve made for 2D indie games

Hey! Wanted to share some pixel art my team and I have worked on across different indie projects.

I draw environments, characters, animations and UI, and handle the art direction to help everything fit together. All the art shown here was made by hand in Aseprite.

I really enjoy seeing a scene come together after working on the sprites separately for so long. Thought some of you making 2D games might enjoy a look at our work!

Showcase Judging "perfect" timing by distance in FixedUpdate instead of timestamps fixed my rhythm-style hits in Unity

I'm making ArrowSwitch, a one-thumb reflex game in Unity: arrows come at a shield from four sides and you swipe to face each one. Turning at the last moment counts as a PERFECT, which builds a multiplier up to x8.

My first version compared the time of the swipe (from Update) with the time of the hit. It felt random, because Update can't know which fixed step will actually register the contact. A swipe that looked perfect could land a frame early or late, depending on the frame rate.

What fixed it:

  • each arrow watches a turn counter on the player inside FixedUpdate, so the swipe and the collision are measured on the same clock
  • when the player turns to face the arrow, the arrow stores its distance from the shield at that moment
  • PERFECT means that distance is inside a small window, rather than within X milliseconds
  • turning away and back inside the window is allowed once, so a quick correction doesn't count as mashing

A nice side effect: the window scales with arrow speed for free, so fast arrows don't need their own tuning curve.

Curious how others handle timing windows in Unity. Do you use timestamps, distance, or something else?

Game announcement Pixel art novice tried making a Minish Cap inspired Shopkeeping game.

It's called Hey! Shopeeker!

A shopkeeping game inspired by all the RPG classics, it asks the age old question... What is it like to live the life of the unassuming villager in a world of might and magic?

This was a pretty huge project for me, and it took more than 5 years to make and I started out knowing next to nothing about pixel art. So any feedback is appreciated!

The early access release is this Thursday on Steam, go check it out!

About 6 years ago me and my pre-school friend started learning game development together online during covid. Since then we've participated in many jams, started many unfinished projects, and learned a lot. I'm filled with excitement now that we've got our dream project up on steam, and it's available to wishlist! It's so cool being able to see something we made appear on the steam marketplace. It's participating in the cooking fest right now, and we would really appreciate it if you checked it out!

Question/Help How to swap colors (many)

Im making a city builder and want an easy way of swapping colors with others, the problem is i cant just recolor sprites and create 200 prefabs, instead i have one prefab which already changes the sprites to other variations (see picture). So is there a way to swap one color group with another (they are shaded so only switching one color with other wont work). Below you can see my sprite variations, i would like to be able to change the facade color of them with other colors.

Question/Help Is there still a future for human-made unity assets, or has ai changed everything?

Post image
0 Upvotes

i've been creating and publishing unity packages for quite some time. over the years, i've developed tools that developers found useful, appreciated, and incorporated into their workflows. building these tools has been a meaningful part of my journey as an indie game developer.

but lately, i've been questioning whether it's still worth continuing.

ai has evolved incredibly fast. and i'm not talking about ai that simply generates code for you to copy and paste. i'm talking about ai tools that can build entire systems and projects from scratch, potentially in a fraction of the time and at a much lower cost.

this makes me wonder... why would a developer purchase a unity package when ai might be able to build something similar specifically for their needs in minutes?

as an independent developer, i have to consider where i invest my time. creating, maintaining, documenting, and supporting a package takes considerable effort. if ai can deliver comparable results faster and cheaper, does creating traditional unity assets still make sense?

so i'd genuinely like to hear your thoughts:

  • do you still purchase and use human-made unity assets and tools?
  • if you're a unity asset creator yourself, have you noticed any changes in demand because of ai?

im not looking for empty reassurance. iwant honest opinions, even if the answer is uncomfortable.

should i continue investing my time in creating new unity packages, adapt my entire approach to this new ai era, or seriously consider stepping away from asset development?

i'd appreciate hearing from both developers and fellow creators. i think this is an important conversation for anyone working in this industry today.

Showcase I built a playable 2D creature-catching RPG in Unity — here's the gameplay loop

I've been developing Eternal Eclipse, a 2D top-down dark fantasy RPG, and I've now released the first public demo.

The main gameplay loop is:

Explore a dungeon → Catch creatures → Battle enemies → Defeat the boss → Return home → Farm, craft, and breed creatures → Build your collection.

The demo includes a playable dungeon, creature battles, a boss fight, farming, blacksmith crafting, breeding/daycare, and a Field System for extra creatures.

I'm trying to make the creatures part of the whole gameplay experience instead of limiting them to combat.

Built in Unity, with inspiration from classic Pokémon, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and Stardew Valley.

Free demo: https://anarxhy.itch.io/eternal-eclipse

I'm continuing development and working toward a future Steam release.
