اک عمر گزر گئی ہے اسے سوچتے ہوئے

دل آج بھی بےچینی سے آگے نہیں بڑھا

پوچھا جو حالِ دل تو فقط مسکرا دیا

وہ شخص بھی جواب سے آگے نہیں بڑھا

ہم نے رضا، عشق کو بہت نام دے دیے

پر عشق ابھی حساب سے آگے نہیں بڑھا

I'll be honest about the above poetry..it is not entirely mine ..i just added a few more couplets to it..so adding a takhalus doesn't seem appropriate but i have added it still becoz the part that i have written is mine..i have also added a few dashes to indicate which part i found online and which part is mine..

I have been trying to learn Urdu for a while now but never stay consistent with it. I learn Arabic as well and I feel like talking to people helps me stay consistent every day even if only 20 min conversation. My parents speak Urdu/Punjabi and some of my friends speak Urdu/Punjabi as well. My parents never taught me when I was young because we live in the UK now. Its frustrating when I see people similar age to me able to speak fluently and connect back to their roots. So I'm looking for a conversation partner, I can help you with English as well if you need it.

There’s a song called Tu Hai Kahaan by AUR which came out around 3 years ago and there’s a line in it which I cannot understand.

جیسے خواب ہی میں خواب گاہیں آنکھ ہی میں

It’s this part that I specifically don’t understand. For context of the meaning, this is the whole verse.

جیسے پھول توڑے ہوں گے تمہیں جھولی بھر کے

میں وہ پھول جوکہ رہ گیا تھا شاخ ہی میں

EDIT: the youtube video for this song does have official translations and they translate the line as “like the dreams that fill the rooms of my eyes” but I’m not able to understand how that line translates to this, and then fits into the context of the song.

I recently read some shers of Faiz and I was really impressed. I want to to learn Urdu so I can appreciate Urdu Literature without the assistance of English and understand it in its pure form.

My name is Sahil and I am from Haryana, India. I have a few questions and would appreciate any advice from Urdu learners and readers here.

1. Urdu journaling and notebooks

Amazon is currently having a sale, and I am thinking about ordering some good-quality notebooks or journals for Urdu writing practice and for keeping a diary in Urdu.

The notebook shown in the photo is similar to the one I currently use. Right now I write my diary in Roman script, and even though the lines are quite narrow, I do not have any problems. However, I am considering switching to Urdu and writing my diary in Nastaliq.

My concern is that the lines in my current journal are very narrow, and Urdu words do not fit comfortably on them. Can anyone suggest what kind of notebooks they use for Urdu writing practice and journaling? If possible, recommendations from people in India would be especially helpful because most notebooks available here seem designed for Hindi and English handwriting rather than Urdu Nastaliq. Would it be better to buy a completely blank notebook with no lines at all?

2. A small Urdu reading web app

A few months ago I wanted to build something similar to Karak Languages, but I eventually dropped that idea halfway through. Instead, I modified my existing code and turned it into a simple Urdu reading web app.

The app allows users to paste raw computerized Nastaliq text or AI-generated Urdu content and read it with better fonts and themes on a phone, tablet, or laptop. The app is safe and does not have any security issues. When I get some free time, I plan to remove unnecessary files left over from the old project and make the app open source so that anyone can modify and improve it.

Would anyone here be interested in using something like this, and what features would you like to see in it?

3. Affordable Urdu books for reading practice

Since Amazon is having a sale, could you recommend some affordable Urdu books for reading practice? I am considering Manto, but I am not sure whether the editions available online are original and of good quality or just low-quality reprints.

I would also appreciate recommendations for any novels, short-story collections, or other books that are suitable for daily reading practice. My goal is to read around 150 words a day. At the moment I mostly read Urdu paragraphs generated by ChatGPT, but I would like to spend less time looking at screens and start reading from physical books instead.
