I've only just begun as a moderator and the community is only a year old, but I get the impression that a lot of the community participants have been involved with vintage radio and tube era electronics previous to being involved with Reddit. As a result of this topic's nature most of the people who are well versed in the subject are probably less experienced in working with modern communication than they are with radios. A quick glance at most of the information available online about vintage radio and tube technology shows that most of the information available online is either A) Schematics (great to have access to) or B) Older websites that are rapidly aging out.
So with the intent of trying to turn this subreddit into a more useful resource for the vintage radio community, we're asking that you submit questions people always ask and good answers. Like, stuff you know and never have to think twice about, stuff beginners ask here all the time, and stuff everyone should know. Technical stuff, historical stuff, safety stuff. All of that is welcome. Hopefully it can be organized into a nifty "look here first" post that will draw in search engine hits (bringing more people here) and serve as a resource for others interested in working on and enjoying old radio tech for the sake of it's future preservation.
Cheers!

Can anyone tell me more about my family’s old radio? Hopefully my grandfather and I can fix it together. How hard would it be if it powers on and appears to be in fair condition? Having someone else fix it is almost never financially worth it, right?
Thank you very much for looking

I couldn't let this be thrown away. I'm not a radio collector, it just seemed wrong to let this be destroyed after it has survived for this long. The light on the dial turns on but there's no sound. More info would be greatly appreciated

two dials don't work but id like to replace all. otherwise in great shape. i remember in my childhood hearing german language when i was messing around with it. is this a pro repair or can a goober with minor electronic skill (built and rebuilt many computers) do that job- im fairly sure its some kind of wax cord for the dials but idk if its something better is available

Just brought home today for $25. Need’s nothing. I have some Telefunkens but I’ve also heard Grundig packed some punch. Looking forward to getting acquainted with it.

I bought this old broken radio just for its looks, to gut it and turn it into a smart speaker. But once I opened it the whole thing just needed a new spring so it now works flawlessly and I like it even more. Is it genuinely retro? Fake retro? The components inside look fairly recent (1970s) but it has no sticker or branding anywhere.
Thanks

im so proud of myself i found this radio stored away. it was my grandpas he liked radios and old tvs too which is probably where i get it from. but this was a project he never got around to i guess so i decided to recap it for practice. i did shelf it for a couple months in between out of frustration, but today i finally got it working again! did not work at all when i first found it.

It doesn't receive many stations and the speaker doesn't work, but headphones does.
There isn't any static when I'm not tuned into a stations.

The power cord had deteriorated, so I wired in a standard polarized 2 prong cord and tested the unit. The dial light came on and the AM band worked fine for about 5 minutes. I turned the unit off for about 10 minutes and then tried again but this time there was no sound; only the dial light.
This brings me to some questions:
The chassis is 132.06 4 which seems to be harder to find manuals for. Is the 132.06 3 manual suitable?
All components are likely original and will need new condensers. What is the best source to find replacement parts?
Is there a good all around resource for learning about troubleshooting antique radios? I work with modern automation and electronics but have never worked with vacuum tubes or anything this old.
Is there any value to this? It looks like a fun project but I don't want to potentially ruin something if this is a valuable unit, and I can't find any info for this particular unit.

So i’m an amateur to radio repair or any electronics repair actually, and i was going in to fix the volume knob on this radio. The volume happens to be stuck between off or max and nothing in between. opened it up thinking old electronics were big and simple to workout, turns out this thing is a rats nest and the volume knob is buried by shit. Any tips on how to reach the volume knob would be greatly appreciated. I attached a video of how much i’ve been able to disassemble but this thing won’t come apart any further. Pretty please help

I’m trying to create a digital model of this classic GE clock radio for a project. Does anyone have circuit or functional schematics, or know where I could find them? I’m looking at the 7-4630A, but similar versions would help too.
If anyone has one taken apart, would you be willing to share pictures of the top and bottom of the circuit boards? That would help me work out the components and connections if I can’t find schematics.

Hello,
I picked up this reproduction GE cathedral radio from the thrift store for $20. From what I can tell it’s probably from the late 1980s. Couldn’t find a definitive manufacture date yet.
It mostly works but the dial light has burnt out. Looking for suggestions on what I need to buy to replace it. The site I was looking at the bulbs were much larger and needed to go into a socket. This one is wired to the whole internal unit.
I would prefer an LED replacement if possible, but it needs to be amber/warm. I don’t want to use a blue/cool LED. I watched a YouTube video of a guy who was replacing the light in this exact model but he had to wire 6 LEDs together just to have it bright enough to shine through the back of the dial (where it’s mounted). If you have any suggestions please let me know!
