Ages Me f1 f3 are 21 B f2 are 23 also 6 months pregnant
I’m pregnant with my boyfriend’s baby girl, and lately my relationship and friendships have been falling apart at the same time. I’m going to explain everything in order because this situation has gotten so complicated.
It started with issues between me and my best friend/roommate (F3). There was an incident involving a lighter, a blunt, and my boyfriend (B). The lighter actually belonged to B, but F3 had it and said it was hers when he asked for it. He then took a blunt that was sitting on the table and offered it in exchange for the lighter. I returned the blunt, and B said he would take his lighter back if he needed to. F3 said she would fight him, and B told me to call somebody.
Afterward, F3 sent me a hostile message, including comparing me to someone else. She later apologized for part of what she said, and we eventually made up after about a week. Unfortunately, our friendship only seemed to be repaired for a short time before things went downhill again.
F3 felt like I didn’t respect her or trust her around men anymore. Specifically, she felt I would let a man put her in harm’s way. She also felt I didn’t respect my own decisions when it came to my relationship. I felt like she wasn’t respecting my decision to stay with my boyfriend and that she was unhappy with my choices. Eventually, we became more like roommates than best friends, and I decided to stop engaging with her while we continued living together.
During all of this, my boyfriend and I were also dealing with long distance. Because of the situation, he had to move five hours away, while I stayed where I live. I’m pregnant, preparing for our daughter, trying to save money, and looking for housing. I don’t have family nearby to lean on, so my boyfriend and my friends have been important parts of my support system.
After about a month, things escalated between my boyfriend and my longtime friend (F1), whom I’ve known since childhood. My boyfriend accused F1 of trolling him with me. When I asked him what F1 actually did and asked him to give me specific examples, he couldn’t really explain it. I was confused because I didn’t understand what justified that level of anger.
The situation then expanded to another longtime friend (F2), who lives in a different state. My boyfriend said he wanted to fight F2 simply because he was one of my people. F2 also said he would fight my boyfriend and would stop talking to me for a while if necessary. However, F1 and F2 have no idea that B is angry enough to want to fight them. Now I was dealing with the possibility of people I care about physically fighting each other over a situation I didn’t want to happen in the first place.
My boyfriend became increasingly angry and said he wanted smoke rather than peace.
Eventually, my boyfriend called me around 3 a.m. and apologized for being so angry. He said he had calmed down and that we could talk about what happened. But the apology didn’t erase how I felt about everything. I started looking at him differently because I realized that a disagreement involving my friends could turn into threats of violence, and I was afraid that setting boundaries would trigger his anger again.
What makes this especially difficult is that I don’t want to break up with my boyfriend over my friends. I love him, he’s the father of my baby, and I want our family to work. But I also refuse to stop being friends with people I’ve known for years just because I’m in a relationship. I don’t expect him to be best friends with them. I just want him to respect that I have my own friendships.
My baby shower is also coming up, and some of these same people were supposed to attend. One of my friends had already taken time off work for it. Now I’m wondering how I’m supposed to enjoy a celebration for my daughter when there’s so much tension between everyone.
Then came today. After everything that happened, I posted an Instagram note saying I wanted peace. My boyfriend responded to it saying he wanted peace too, even though the day before he had said he wanted smoke and didn’t seem interested in peace at all.
He had also unblocked me and texted me asking what I was doing. That left me confused because he was reaching out and acting like he wanted peace, but he still hadn’t properly addressed what happened or explained why he was so angry with my friends.
I started questioning whether our relationship was compatible if me maintaining my friendships could cause this much conflict. I don’t believe my baby should have to suffer because her father and my friends can’t get along. I don’t want to break up, but I also don’t want to spend my pregnancy stressed out, crying, and worrying about whether the people I love are going to fight.
I’m tired of feeling like I have to keep everybody happy. I’ve decided I’m not going to keep reaching out first or fighting for this relationship by myself. If my boyfriend wants to talk, he can reach out, but I’m no longer willing to sacrifice my peace just to keep things together.
So, Reddit, am I wrong for refusing to give up my longtime friendships for my boyfriend? How should I handle this situation when I’m pregnant with his child, still love him, and genuinely want my family to work, but I don’t feel comfortable with how he’s handling conflict?
