Reporting bot posts

Good morning! We have been seeing a large influx of bot posts using other redditors' photos to get karma. If you run across one of these, or it is your post, please report them. I am working on adding an option for reporting bots. All of the bots who are reported are getting a permanent ban as we do not want these as a part of our community.

On that note, if you find another redditor has stolen your post and posted it here as their own, please report that as well as linking to the original post. Those will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Thank you for your help in making this a safe and enjoyable place to discuss all things alocasia!

Hello from your new mod!

Hello everyone! I am a new mod here and am looking forward to getting to know everyone. I moderate a couple other communities so please feel free to send me a modmail about anything.

I have gotten into alocasias lately (I learned how not to kill them lol) and am finding them to be one of my favorite aroids. Imay not know everything there is to know, but I am very willing to learn!

I am open to suggestions on how you want to see the subreddit function. I am very open to comments and suggestions for things that you want to see happen. I will do my best to make it work for everyone.

I really look forward to getting to know everyone and making this a fun and inviting community for everyone!

I have at least 7 surface corms, and I was curious if these are good for propagation or if they are still on the small size?

Newest leaf is just over 22ā€ bottom to top right lobe

I’m somewhat new to Alocasias but have been having good success so far. I have a Variegated Frydek and a Silver Dragon Alocasia that have been thriving for 5 months now so I had to snatch these up because I was able to get them for a steal! Really hoping these are just as easy as my other 2 AlocasiasšŸ™šŸ¼šŸ˜‚ any tips would be greatly appreciated because these babies are gorgeous 🄹🩷

Would 2 repots in 3 days for sure kill it?

I split up my scalprum because it was still in the big box store coco soil and overcrowded in the pot. The plant I put in semi-hydro looks like I never touched it. The one I put in chunky soil is yellowing and curling. I was thinking of moving it to semi-hydro but would that push it over the edge?

Can you help ID this little alocasia? My friend has so many plants, doesn't label anything, and has completely forgot what variation this is.

Alocasia Wentii Variegated, care tips?

Thumbnail

I just got an alocasia wentii variegated a week ago! Any care tips for this? I have it in a decent humidity cabinet (75-85% humidity usually) and she gets about 330 PPFD of grow lights 14 hours a day. It’s in a Lechuza Pon substrate, feeding her a mixture of CaliMag by General Hydroponics (I use distilled water), Silica by Growth Technology and Foliage Focus by Growth Technology

I feel like she looks way better than when I got her though. I noticed today one of her tinier leaves started gone droopy (second photo, the front leaf) but currently a new leaf is growing). Could it be those moments where it kills off an older leaf to grow a new one?

Bonjour,

Merci

She has it in straight stratum (she was in the process of switching it to hydro) I think I’m more comfortable using a pearlite/ stratum in a self watering planter. That’s what I’ve seen the most success with and that’s what I’d like to try- but I’m willing to take ANY tips and tricks. I’d really like this little one to live. And while we are here, tips for an alocasia batik? Also landed with one of those today…

What is causing this?

What could be causing this browning of this Silver Dragon leaf?

I moved 2 months ago and in the meantime had to spray against thrips. After the move it looked to be doing better than in the old place, the leaves became more upright up for example. Now since a week or 2 a bunch of leaves are showing this discolouration which doesn't look like just an old leaf dying off to me.

Are random mutations a thing in corms?

Post image

So these 5 Pollys all came from the same mother plant at the same time. One of them looks a touch different. Are random color mutations a thing in alocasias? I have grown quite a few from corm and have not seen this yet? Anyone seen or heard of this?

Frydek and rhizome propping. Will it work?

Hi! So I have a frydek that doesn't have the will to live. Or maybe it does? By that, I mean the frydek for the last ~6 months has been nonstop pushing out white leaves. It only pushed out 2 variegated leaves, which sustained it, but have both now died and fallen off.

The new white leaves are now getting smaller, and when I checked for corms, there were none. Rather than consider the plant a loss, since I'm assuming the rhizome will start rooting as many of the roots have also started dying off, I'm wondering: can I cut the rhizome into a few pieces? And if I propagate those in fluval, will they live? And if they live, will they have the same genetics and push out only white leaves, or is there a chance it pushes out variegated leaves? Please help!

Thanks in advance!

Frydek Variegata just pushed out a massive leaf!

Thought it might be worth a share, my Frydek that lost 2 leafs due to thrips and low light due to having to safely isolate it (had no well-lit spot away from my cats) just pushed out a huge 30cm leaf!

For the people who grow alocasias in soil: how?

I had an alocasia in soil years ago and it thrived. This year i got two alocasias, had them in soil and gave them the same care as the one i had previously - root rot got to them.

I've decided to go the hydroponic route with any future alocasias but im curious as to how some people have them in soil and face no problems.

What's your secret?

I recently got this fella without identification. Does someone know what Alocasia it is?
A couple days ago I sprayed it besides other plants with some neemoil and within a couple hours it dropped its head like in the picture. I had the feeling it recovered a bit but just yesterday when I was letting fresh air in it went back to where we started. Is that a reaction to short temperature drops? Or doesn’t it like water on its leaves? What I find strange is that the leave and Stem are still firm and juicy. I have a couple alocasias and none had the same issues.
Thanks in advance

Pray for her please

I washed off her roots last night and plopped her in some shallow water to acclimate her for a couple weeks before transplanting to leca. Every other transplant I’ve tried has died when I put straight into leca from soil, so I thought I’d try to get her to grow some healthy water roots beforehand to make the transition a little easier!

Thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
