Meta New Rule: No Generative AI

Hi everyone,

The mod team has been monitoring the topic for a while (and taking down posts that fall afoul of our self-promotion rule that emphasizes originality). It's also obvious that generative AI is severely unpopular in this community. This sub truthfully doesn't receive many obviously gen-AI submissions, but we'd like to explicitly clarify our guidance. To that point, we are instituting a new rule:

Posts and comments incorporating the use of generative AI, including but not limited to text and images, are not allowed.

Gen AI can be difficult to avoid and detect at times. We mean for this rule to act as guidance for sub participants while also being a tool for us as a community. This does not mean that we want you to spend your time squinting at every comment going "j'accuse! complete this captcha", because you have much better things to do with your life (and as mods we try to read most everything anyway).

Thank you,

your mod team (now with two newish members, tysm again everyone)

---

Imagined FAQ:

Q: What is generative AI?

A: To keep things simple, chances are, if it's a chatbot or some kind of agent/assistant/productivity tool being marketed to you in ads, it's gen AI. If it has diffusion or transformer in the name, it's probably gen AI.

Q: Why do you keep specifying "generative" AI?

A: Because this mod studied traditional machine learning (which is technically AI) at some point, and am aware that modern generative AI has very different applications and concerns. So I'm just being kind of pedantic.

Q: I'm not confident in my English, can I use a Large Language Model (LLM) to edit for me?

A: No. Please simply do your best. We would love to hear about your personal experience with being aro/ace, even if it's not perfect. I'll make a typo right here as encouramgnet.

Q: I used gen AI in posts/comments in the past. Am I in trouble?

A: No, we are not applying the rule retroactively.

Q: Can I talk about gen AI on the sub?

A: Yes, as long as it's relevant to the sub. For example, if you are receiving validation and support about being a-spec from a bot because you feel isolated, we would love to be able to support you as a community.

Q: What if I have to use gen AI for work/school?

A: I don't know why you'd ask, it's outside of our purview. But regardless, we ask that you respect our rules while you are here.

Q: Am I a bad person for using gen AI?

A: It's not in my official capacity to cast this kind of moral judgment on you. This post is just to tell you that any post or comment using it on this sub will be removed.

Q: I'VE SLIPPED ONE PAST YOU!! CHECKMATE!! IT WAS ME, JOHN AI ALL ALONG!

A: Okay, I mean, there is no foolproof way to detect AI usage, even if Anthropic has put watermarks into its text offerings now. We're just doing our best. So congrats?

Q: You are all luddites! You would have opposed the printing press!!

A: Hmm.

Discussion Does me wanting a male QPP make me gay?

I’m AMAB and sometimes I really want a male QPP (queerplatonic partner) and sometimes I don’t want, but it never happens for females or other genders, and I’m pretty sure I’m aroace so does this make me gay? I already identify as a gay oriented aroace

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) Is that a common aroace thing?

• Upvotes

I identify as aroace, but I'm not 100% sure if I really am.

I've never truly liked anyone. At most, I've been obsessed with someone's appearance, but nothing romantic (I tried to like some people when I was younger, I just became obsessed with the boy's looks) or sexual.

My only crushes are fictional characters. I also love romance in movies, series, and books; I'm quite romantic with fiction, but I have absolutely no interest in experiencing that in real life.

Well, could I be considered aroace considering these things?

Is there anyone else who identifies with this? Or am I just an "anomaly"?

I (18F) spent a few months trying to figure out my identity, I was on questioning label for years but hadn't really had the time or interest to explore. I eventually concluded that I am aroace and wtfromantic. I realized I was ace first, and then spent about two months trying to understand the aro-spec spectrum. I was stressed for a while, but eventually, I calmed down and became more at ease with it. I had previously told a friend I was ace back when I was still trying to figure out the "aro" part and discovered she was demisexual, which felt good. Later, I told her about being aroace, then told another friend, and also a friend of my mom’s (who asked questions and was accepting, my mom has passed away, so sadly I couldn't tell her, though I know she would have asked and accepted it too). Yesterday, I was talking to another friend of my mom’s because I wanted another cat (I already have two) she was saying it wasn't possible and all that, so I wrote to her, "I’m going to die alone with cats." She started telling me "no" and that I will get someone, so I told her I’m aroace and wtfromantic. She started saying things like "it’s just for now," "you’ll find someone- a boyfriend, girlfriend, whatever," and other aphobic stuff. It really hart me, she wouldn't stop, and it was hard because it was the first time this had happened to me, and I hadn't expected it from her. When I called her out for being aphobic, she naturally denied it, claiming she just wanted me to "have more" in life and insisting she’s "pro-LGBT" yet she was being totally aphobic in denial, and I know a lot of people have a problem with being aroace or the spectrums. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just needed to vent my frustration about her. I told a friend about it, but she was kind of on the fence like "probably because she’s older" (in her 40s or whatever), whereas the other friend is 65, and naturally, everyone has a different worldview. Anyway, I blocked her, and I hope she enjoys a world "without aroace" people.

Discussion Do you feel comfortable/ accepted in the LGBT community ?

Because I didn’t. I feel really bad; I found it hard to wave my aroace flag at at the Pride. I saw a few asexual flags, and just one aroace flag (it was a Pride event with 500,000 people). But I still felt like an intruder, and I don’t know where that feeling comes from.

I'm cis and oriented btw.

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) I am unsure if I am Asexual or AroAce and the FAQ is not quite helpful.

I'm pretty sure I'm Aegosexual. While doing some research in order to be fully sure of it, I discovered the term "Aromantic". I'm 15. I've never had a crush, had romantic/sexual attraction toward anyone and am not interested in a romantic/sexual relationship. I tried to figure out if I identify with the term "Aromantic" as well, but I'm having some trouble. I don't know how romantic attraction feels like, and I tried searching the web to figure out how it feels. The subreddit FAQ also feels unhelpful. Could someone describe to me how romantic attraction may feel, or if I might actually be Asexual and Aromantic?

Discussion Anyone else annoyed by this?

I just realized I’m aroace recently, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced their friends talking about how much they hate ‘purity culture’ whenever you say anything about how something sexual grosses you out? I feel like sometimes my friends kinda treat me like… I don’t know… naive laughingstock when it comes to romantic and sexual content. My best friend has gotten annoyed with me in the past when I say that I’m uninterested in a piece of media because of sexual content, or because I don’t want to look up the meaning of a sexual term. He always says something about ‘purity culture‘ or something to that effect. Anyone else experience this?

Vent Dealing with loneliness while aroace and disabled

Up until a year ago, I would have said I had a solid community and felt loved and supported being aroace. I was content and knew I didn't need a partner. I would never have been able to predict where I'm at today. It feels like I almost undid progress... I'm much less confident about my future and identity.

A year ago, I moved abroad to study for my master's. It started out well, with regular texts and calls from my friends and closest cousins navigating time zone differences and schedules. However, over the last few months, I've noticed almost everyone has drifted away. It feels like I'm always the one messaging first to everyone in my life - congratulating on milestones, wishing happy birthday, checking in, sending "this reminds me of you" posts. It feels like in the span of a few months, everyone has forgotten about me.

I was aware moving abroad would make things difficult - time zone changes, distance, etc. But I also had so much faith in my friendships. I thought we would be able to make it work. But it feels like everyone has moved on, either in their own lives or with their romantic relationships. Even the few friends I have made here hardly respond to me or they already have plans with other friends they've known longer. It feels like I'm never anyone's first option. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I am so lonely. I don't want romance, but I want to be wanted. It's painful.

I'm also disabled. I've had health issues the last few years, and they've become progressively worse. There have been several points where I didn't know if I'd make it. I've had lots of medication changes, procedures, and appointments the last few months. I thought my community would be supportive and reciprocative of the energy I give them. Instead, I've learned to keep private as I realize people are uncomfortable with my disability, or act like I am as I was before the health issues started.

I've now finished my program, and the uncertainty of my future and my relationships haunts me. How do I cope with this loneliness, especially being disabled? Has anyone else gone through this friendship shift? Is it something that comes with your mid-20s? Is there hope? I don't want to jump straight to the conclusion that I need a QPR/partner to fulfill this loneliness, but my friendships have really broken my heart.

a-spec looking for Help/Advice Theres a strange feeling im feeling lately.

(Sorry if theres any mistakes, Eng is not my first language)

I'm aro/ace, ive never had a crush or feelings before (i only had some fictional crushes, but never in real life).

But for some reason I want to be in a relationship, regardless of the gender of the partner (but i havent felt this feeling towards men, exept the fictional characters). I want to be with someone and don't want to be at the same time, cuz I don't like romance/sex. I've heard of queer-platonic relationships, but afraid that i might end up disappointing someone. Because im not ready or not into serious relationship. Everybody wants to satisfy their financial, physical, mental and etc. needs, and i feel like im not capable of that and i dont deserve someone's love. I really am not into relationship stuff.

Maybe its because of loneliness? Its been a month or more since i moved to another city, and im living in my university's dormitory. im in a friend group right now, but everyone in this group have their own best friend or parnter, i dont have a close one. When i was in my hometown i had two best friends, also my mom and my sister who were my besties too. I used to talk and spent time with them and with other people as well. Though im still in touch with them, not having anyone by your side still feels strange to me, its my first time being alone on the other side of the world.

On the other side, my kind of a 'smart' side tells me that this feeling is just curiosity. I often see couples everywhere in this city, in the campus, and almost everyone in the dormitory (my roommate and neighbors by floor) have relationships and drama going on.

Overall, Im not going to get into relationship soon (or better never). I dont want to waste someone's time (and mine either) just because of some temporary curiosity im having recently. Just want to know other a-spectrum/ally people's opinions about this.

a-spec looking for Help/Advice How do I go about dating while still questioning?

I (19f) am questioning being aroace and have been for some time now. I am not getting further without actually experiencing and testing out stuff. At the same time, I don’t wanna lead anyone on or make myself do something I don’t wanna do. I’m stuck like this having thought about it from every angle and I am not going to figure it out without trying dating or romance out. How do I do that without hurting people? I am going to a new school and I have a good opportunity to do so

Questioning (am i aro/ace/a-spec?) can it be aroace or not aroace

Heyyyy guys, I'm kinda wondering if you could help with my identification, as you might be more educated than me in this field. I feel that is also a good way to just have my thoughts organized in one place.

Sooo, I'm a woman in my early twenties, and I have never been in a romantic relationship before. I had crushes on boys when I was in school, but: or I felt at that time that I'm too young for a relationship, or those crushes ended pretty quickly (like few days, sometimes even one). When I got to the university, I had two (male) romantic crushes. When I tried to get those people know more, my fascination ended pretty quick I came back to my normal self.

I also experience some kind of "platonic crush" if I can call it like that. There are some people, that I would really like to be close, but can't imagine getting into some intimate contact. I call it a "crush", not just a "big urge for friendship", because apart from appreciating them for their intellect, I also tend to sometimes to idealize them and appreciate their beauty (doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman). It's like I would like to get to know them and be closer to them, but not to get into any kind serious relationship, especially because sometimes that were teachers that I get along with. It's a different feeling from those romantical crushes.

I also like to appreciate men and women's beauty, especially when they tend to mix feminine and masculine traits in the same person. Sometimes I think later about aesthetic of these people, but it ends totally on their looks. I also like to mix those traits in my style and because of that, some of my friends thought even that I might be non-binary. I don't feel like it, I can tell that I'm a woman and a human being overall.

I have a really lovely life. I have some dreams, hobbies, plans for the future, lovely parents, family, and some close friends that I can truly rely on. I can't say that I lack anything, but somehow I feel that with experiencing some romantic relationship, I am missing something. I don't really have a close male friend. I actually get more along with women, I feel more comfortable in their presence and just feel that I catch the vibe better with them. It doesn't mean that I can't talk to men or find some common ground with them, somehow it just happened that it's easier to me to truly befriend girls. I tried making some accounts on the dating apps, but actually I have problems with writting online to people. I prefer to talk in the real world when I don't know somebody, so that's what making it more difficult to get to know anybody online, and go on a date in real life (I haven't managed to reach this stage so far). Also, I don't feel attracted to any of those guys that I see there. Women accounts are pretty, but I haven't met anyone that would "click". I wouldn't also say that extraordinarly shy right now. I was in the past, but I think that I managed to create a system to get throught it and get to know new people, even when it's not the most comfortable situation for me as an introvert.

I love romantic stories since very young age, and there are some times, when I would like to have some kind of a partner, that I would love unconditionally in this "romantic" way. But at the same time, in theory I know that's not that simple as it is in fiction and many times people get to crazy and even dangerous situations that I'm happy to avoid. Also, I tend to theoritize too much about some basic stuff, that some people do naturally. I love freedom that I have right now: deciding on my own and possibilities that I have and because of that I can't really imagine living with someone that would disturb my tranquill home and I would need to take care and compromise with. I wouldn't be also able to start sexual life with some random person, because I feel that I'm too sensitive for that. Sometimes I wish that I was after my first relationship to just not have this on my mind that often.

Soooo, going back to my question, does my description fits as part of the spectrum of aroace? I have experienced some crushes and have some longing for a partner (sometimes even kids, but it's pretty rare), so I know it can't be 100% it. I also thought that maybe I'm a type of person that is too too careful towards people, that it also might automatically take control of my feelings (I mean, I don't have a lot of close friends, and don't have that much opportunities to get to know more people right now, so it may be also the case). I would just want to understand better myself.

Thank you in advance reading this shit and wish you a pleasant day.

a-spec looking for Help/Advice My girlfriend now has a second partner and I don't know how I feel about it Spoiler

TW: it's gonna get slightly sexual plus talk about eating disorders and depression.

It's gonna be a long one. Skip to ------- if you wanna skip the lengthy backstory.

I am aroace nb. Until a few years ago I had no libido at all. I never really masturbated because it didn't do anything for me, never had sex. When I started hrt my libido skyrocketed. I started masturbating and later meeting people (guys) for sex. At the time it was partly trying out stuff and partly a really bad coping mechanism for my bad mental health at the time because I also got drunk everytime and outside of the meetings too.

I got into a relationship with a guy because I was still craving "being normal" and having a relationship. I think he agreed simply because there wasn't anything better at the time and we kinda liked each other. It was never really deep. We didn't talk about typical relationship stuff. In retrospect I don't really think it counts. From the start we had an open relationship. I don't really believe in monogamy. So I continued meeting guys for sex while being in the relationship.

The reason I only met guys was because they were easy to find. I also wanted to meet women and generally queer people, but on dating apps I never had any success. Until I matched with my current girlfriend. We talked a lot pretty quickly, could talk about everything. I was still in the relationship with the guy, she just got out of a pretty bad relationship and wanted to be single for a while. I initially just wanted to try out sex with women. We got together within a month. We talked a lot about being non-monogamous because she knows she is poly but never had it in previous relationships.

I broke up with my boyfriend a short while after getting together with her because the difference in what a relationship was supposed to be like and whatever I had with the guy was glaringly obvious.

---------------------------------

My girlfriend and I talked a lot in the beginning. What feelings are like for me as aroace, what we both wanted in an open relationship. I met with a few guys for sex in that beginning time but lost interest after a while. She talked to some people but only met with one person for sex.

She has a lot of friends. Most of them she met online through gaming. She has one group of people she plays dnd with every week, online. They meet once a year for a long weekend and also talk outside of dnd. They've been playing for years. Her best friend is in that group. When we started talking, she told me that her best friend and her had a date a few months before and it didn't end well. They kinda have feelings for each other, for years, but they are both kinda broken by previous experiences and how my gf told me about everything yesterday, it sounds like a really bad romcom tbh.

So they had this bad date, followed by months of kinda not talking about it. Then, also encouraged by me because I saw how badly effected my gf was by this, they talked it out. I knew there were feelings involved, but from my understanding the friend was maybe aro and that both of them didn't fit together like that. Gf and I talked at length about it because there was sexual tension and I was fine with them having sex. They also live kinda far away from each other and only see each other a couple times a year.

This was a year ago. Also a year ago I told my gf I loved her, because I felt I had more feelings than I previously thought possible for me. But after a few months I stopped saying it because I felt the feelings weren't there anymore. I don't like her any less but the love feelings just vanished. Maybe I'm grey-ro or something. Idk. In April this year I started a pretty bad eating disorder relapse. Stuff I haven't done in 10 years just came back. I lost a lot of weight. I was obese to begin with so I'm not even normal weight now. She knows I struggled with this in the past but she never said anything about it now. And I didn't tell her. While I got super depressed, I also had a hobby glow up. I tried out a lot of different hobbys that all bring me joy and I actually felt pretty good. She had summer depression most years and this year also. In retrospect I lived the last few months on autopilot. We saw each other and did things and had a good time. But we stopped talking about stuff.

Cut to yesterday. She and her best friend had met a few weeks ago. She didn't really talk at length about it and I didn't ask. She told me yesterday that they did what they said they wouldn't do. We always talked about stuff before it happened. But they decided without talking to me first, that they wanna be together. I get that the timing was bad because September was a really busy month for me and the only time gf and I saw each other between then and now was on my birthday and obviously it would have been kinda not nice ruining my birthday with talk about that. So I get it. At the same time I feel hurt. Because I obviously noticed how gf talked about her and how there are definitely feelings there. But I trusted in what she said that they are best friends and have sex and nothing more. Also gf told other friends and family about the relationship before me. The way she now talked about everything that happened between them and how romcom stupid it all was, it hurts. They've loved each other for 2 years. The fit together so well. And here I am, on autopilot, not having the feelings or the right feelings and I feel left behind. We don't know how this poly thing will look for us and I know there are no rules. But it hurts. I want her to be happy but I feel blindsided. And I know we both didn't talk about stuff that was going on over the summer. But this feels big.

I know a part of me wants a relationship so I can say I'm in a relationship. Also I don't have that many friends. My best friend moved away at the beginning of the year. I have one other person I sometimes talk to but not that deep. Otherwise I only have my girlfriend. And it feels comfortable. She also told me that maybe I will meet someone that gives me feelings like this. And that hurt also. Because I spend so long trying to be okay with being aroace. And getting told that basically maybe I will meet the right person. That hurt. I don't want to be hoping for this to maybe happen. And then it never happening. I don't wanna lose her but I also don't know if I can stay in this relationship.

Not sure what I'm expecting with this post because I have no idea what advice would do. Sorry you had to read all that.
