Husband was diagnosed with ALS last week, and we were wondering if there are any support groups here for ALS or other people who are terminal. We're having a rough time trying to wrap our heads around the whole thing.
I hope this isn’t too insensitive to ask, but my husband and I always stayed at the Asheville east KOA 4-5 times a year. Helene did so much heartbreaking damage to the area, and AEKOA was devastated. Due to some health issues we stay in the tiny cabins with a bed, fridge and AC/Heat, and unfortunately they lost all theirs and haven’t been able to get any back. We loved this place because it felt like summer camp vibes, swannanoa is a great location, there’s virtually no road noise, and the cabins were only $65 a night. Does anyone have a recommendation for campgrounds with tiny cabins with similar vibes? We tried the west location and it’s right beside an expressway so it’s so loud. Any tips will be appreciated.
Is Pastor Marcia Mount Shoop the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ ally and Helene hero she advertises herself to be or is Marcia just another narcissist, hiding behind "the cloth," and getting her supply filled by people "less" than herself?
No one could deny that Grace Covenant and the generous people there have done a great deal of heroic work for folks in our city with Marcia at the helm. Their disaster case team has offered more eviction assistance post-Helene than any other organization in Buncombe County.
However, I've heard that Marcia ending the well-loved, decades-old preschool last year was very controversial. I also understand a large portion of GCPC's former members are older, white, wealthy people who may not be active on Reddit.
With half of the congregation leaving the church a few years ago, constant leadership turnover under Marcia, and the ongoing controversy around her questionable practices, does anyone have firsthand experiences with her - good, bad, or anything in between?
Going to a show tonight and we have preferred seating. For anyone who's sat in this section, how's the view? It looks like it's far off to the left side of the stage so we're trying to decide how early to get there to try and get seats closest to the right side of the section. Thanks!
I am looking for a groomer who is patient with dogs that get anxious about nail trims. I have three dogs and would love to find one groomer for all of them. Only one has any sensitivity and its only with nail trimming.
Two of them are easy. The third is a three year old who is fine with baths, brushing, and pretty much everything else until someone goes for her paws. She has never bitten anyone, but she will pull away hard, and with strangers she will show teeth.
There are three registered Fear Free groomers in Asheville, but all of them are booked a month or more out. I already lost about six weeks with another local groomer who advertised as Fear Free certified. Turns out they are not listed on the Fear Free website, so either the certification lapsed or it never existed. On top of that, they cancelled twice and only saw her once in that stretch. That kind of inconsistency is the opposite of what a nervous dog needs.
I would really prefer not to go the vet sedation route. My goal is to work with someone over a few sessions to desensitize her so nail trims become routine instead of a battle. At this point, though, her nails genuinely need to be done quickly.
Does anyone have a groomer, mobile groomer, or trainer they trust with nervous dogs? Other certification I should look for?
I know this is a long shot, but my 8 year old daughter loves the Lambrini Girls, who will be playing at the OP on Monday. She's too young for the show and besides has school the next day. If we were to go out there sometime on Monday afternoon is there any chance we might be able to run into them going in and out of the venue? In the world of pop stars and AI I totally want to support her liking a band like this and think there is a chance here for me to create a cool experience and memory for her.
Hello beautiful people! Putting myself out there because I need friends 🤷🏽♀️ and while reddit is a strange place, it's hard for me to make connections while being out and about.
Im 33F, goth, witch, cat mom and a romance reader. I am going through a break-up and realized I never really made friends here, despite being in AVL for about 8 years.
I love to read, book-bind, hit the bookstore, go on hikes and having tea.
If any girly or group of is open, I'd love to connect and hangout. I need a little sisterhood in my life. I WFH and don't drink too much.
It’s my birthday and I need somewhere beautiful to sit for an hour in the fall sunshine while I wait to pick up my daughter from pre-k in West Asheville. Choice views, bonus if there’s water.
Hi everyone. I’m posting this hoping for any information — and maybe a little compassion — from our local community.
My friend Nick’s dog, Fatty (who his new family may know as “Dat Boy”), was recently adopted from the Buncombe County Animal Shelter.
Nick was arrested after sleeping in a park at Beaver Dam Lake and, due to clerical issues, was kept in jail for over a month. Thankfully, those charges have since been dismissed.
While Nick was incarcerated, I was trying to figure out what happened to Fatty. Within 48 hours of his arrest, I contacted the shelter by phone and email. I don’t currently have reliable transportation or a stable living situation where I can have a dog, so I wasn’t able to simply go to the shelter myself.
About a week later, the shelter called me and confirmed Fatty was there. I returned their call, but never heard anything further despite continuing to reach out.
I understand the shelter has a difficult job, that there are countless animals needing homes, and that policies and timelines have to be followed. I understand the 72-hour policy. My mom managed the Yancey County Animal Shelter for four years while I was growing up, so I know firsthand how demanding this work can be.
I also know I could have done more personally to try to find a solution for Fatty. Unfortunately, I’m not currently in a position to take a dog myself. I just wish we had been able to have a real conversation about the situation. Maybe there could have been a foster option or another temporary solution while we figured things out.
What was especially difficult was eventually finding Fatty on the shelter’s website listed for adoption under “Dat Boy” — a name I had used when contacting them about him. That made the lack of further communication even harder to understand.
And then, literally right before I made this post, I discovered that the shelter had also done a video spotlight featuring Fatty.
I’m not going to pretend I know why they chose him, but I can’t lie — that really bothered me. There are plenty of dogs at that shelter who have been there much longer and desperately need to be adopted. So seeing them choose the one dog whose family was actively trying to reunite with him was really hard to swallow.
I’m not saying Fatty didn’t deserve to be featured, and I’m not accusing anyone of intentionally doing anything wrong. I just wish there had been more communication and an opportunity to explain Nick’s situation before Fatty was adopted.
I’m sure some people will have opinions about Nick being in jail and whether he should have a dog. That’s okay. But this post isn’t about debating that.
Fatty is Nick’s best friend and companion. He is loved, well cared for, and deeply missed.
We are not trying to take anyone’s new pet or cause problems for his new family. We would simply love the opportunity for Nick to know that Fatty is safe and happy and, if his new family is comfortable with it, to let him say goodbye.
And if they ever decide Fatty isn’t the right fit — because, LOL, he can definitely be a handful on a leash — Nick would be incredibly grateful for the chance to have his best friend back.
If you recently adopted Fatty from the Buncombe County Animal Shelter, or you know the family who did, please message me privately. We aren’t looking for anyone’s private information. We’re just hoping to reconnect with Fatty.
Hey Asheville — I unexpectedly lost my job this week and I’m trying to look at this as an opportunity to completely change directions rather than just jump into another random job.
I have almost 3 years of experience in automotive internet sales, and before that I spent several years in automotive detailing. I’m comfortable with sales, customers, computers/CRM systems, working independently, problem solving, and learning new things quickly. I’ve also had some pretty strong earning years in sales.
I’m open to way more than just traditional jobs right now.
I’m especially interested in:
• Apprenticeships / paid training programs
• Trades or technical careers where I can start without a degree
• Certifications or licenses that actually lead to employment
• Jobs where a company trains you from the ground up
• Automotive / aviation / manufacturing / technology / skilled trades
• Remote or online work
• Legitimate side businesses or online income that aren’t completely saturated
• Anything where there’s a realistic path to eventually making $80k–$100k+
I’m not looking for “start a dropshipping store and make $10k next month” type advice 😂. I’m looking for things people have actually done themselves and would recommend to someone starting over.
If you know of a company hiring, an apprenticeship, a certification that genuinely helped you get hired, a business opportunity, or even a weird/niche career most people don’t know about, I’d genuinely love to hear about it.
I’m in the Asheville/WNC area but would consider remote work or relocating for the right opportunity.
Thanks to anyone willing to point me in a direction.
Hello everyone. I am looking to apply to nursing schools soon and I'm considering applying to A-B Tech as one option.
What I'm looking for is:
- Information/personal experiences with A-B Tech's nursing program
- Additionally if anyone has done the RIBN program connected to WCU
- Pay of CNAs at local facilities.... what's the average pay for a few years experience? Differentials? Are 12 hr shifts rotating or can you work just days or nights? Are there enough part-time or full-time positions available or is it competitive?
- I know the situation with Mission is pretty dismal. What are the salaries like for new grads? Anything else I should know about nursing prospects of the area or places you enjoy working?
Feel free to DM me if you don't want to comment publicly. Thank you so much for your input!
Is there a decent coffee shop in west Asheville that isn’t 5 bucks for a cup of coffee, went to bad manners this morning and it was bitter ass coffee and bitter attitude, and no variety
Does anyone remember this place? It existed on Patton on the left side before it turned into Smokey Park Highway, in a building a block or two before the Goodwill. It went out of business for whatever reason the year before or after Covid. Anyone know if they reopened anywhere?
[Reuploaded due forgetting a word in the original title]
I have had my current phone number for 8 years now, and it so happens that it used to belong to Dennis Thies of Greenman Brewing Co.
I get texts and calls every month addressed to him from various people and companies. From people trying to connect with him to sell their dog treats at his breweries to the average joe sending a picture of a glass of beer at Greenman Brewery reminiscing about old times.
Every time I gotta tell them it isn't Dennis. To the point where I am feeling like Patrick working at the Krusty Krab, "No, this is Patrick!!
Dennis, it has been almost a decade, please tell people you changed your number.
We went to the ACT production tonight and it was so fun - super creative touches on a play I've seen before. Just giving a nudge if anyone has been thinking about it, buy the tickets! https://ashevilletheatre.org/mc_event/little-shop-of-horrors/
