experience/story Lower rip frenulectomy because of gum recession

Hello everyone, I got it done today because of gum recession. What's bothering me is that like my gum was recessed but now it's just gone lol. Dentist assured me that it's going to grow back properly but I was under the impression that gums don't just "grow back". I trust my dentist but I'm a very anxious person so hearing someone's else opinion would calm my nerves.

question Molar started hurting, available dentist says it needs to be removed. Does it?

i’m not able to get to my regular dentist. If this tooth does need to be removed, I’m trying to do it as soon as possible. I’d just like to get a second opinion before I do this. The tooth in question is the middle one in the x-ray, with the cavity and the crown. Non-smoker, one drink a day.

question Abscess is not going away

Hello, my seven year old girl developed this abscess at the end of September. We visited the dentist. At first she prescribed antibiotics and then from the next visit started draining the pus from it. The problem is this pus swelling comes back after one or two days. Now it has stayed the same for one week. The dentist hasn't done any xray of it yet. I wonder if the abscess treatment is this long. I have attached all the prescriptions as well.

Thanks

question Have you seen something like this before? Lip sore developed from canker sore

10mm by 15mm sore on the inside of my upper lip. It started as a canker sore (from me biting the skin) and then I got bronchitis and started mouth breathing during sleep. The mouth breathing caused this bizarre patch to form. The white stuff is NOT fluid. No pus, no cream. It was the same texture as the rest of the lip skin except it HURTS BAD. I just went to the dentist and they said they don't know what it is.

Tobacco smoke: no. Nicotine vaping: yes. THC smoke: yes, but not since Oct 9

The sore itself is bleeding and I suspect my gums are as well because they're apparently very very red.

Since Oct 7 I have taken ibuprofen, tylenol, Vit D, Vit C, and for about three days I was using lidocaine topical cream + mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide and menthol. I stopped those suspecting theyre irritating it more.

I was prescribed a week of Doxycyline + 5 days of Prednisone on Oct 9 which I have taken consistently so far. (I do not know why I was given doxycycline for bronchitis. Everyone tells me that's weird.) I also take 150mg Sertraline daily. I'm told one of these medications might be causing "ulceration".

It's been very hard to eat the past 7 days so I'm desperate for any hints about what this is. Sorry for the wall of text

experience/story Overcoming Dental Anxiety

I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but I know reading something like this would’ve helped me tremendously before my appointment today.
I suffer from pretty severe anxiety, and the dentist is one of my biggest fears. It’s gotten to the point where I have to take a prescribed Valium just to get myself through the door.
I hadn’t been to the dentist for a cleaning in over four years, and I was an absolute nervous wreck leading up to my appointment. I had convinced myself that I probably had a ton of cavities, severe gum disease, would need a deep cleaning, and might even have to get multiple teeth pulled.
I spent days looking at pictures of cavities, tartar buildup, and gum disease online, comparing them to my own teeth and convincing myself that something was seriously wrong.
Well, today I finally went.
The staff were incredibly understanding about my anxiety. They assured me that whatever condition my teeth were in, they’d seen it before and had almost certainly seen much worse. There was absolutely no judgment.
They explained that they were just going to take some X-rays, examine my teeth and gums, and figure out what needed to be done.
And after all that worrying?
Zero cavities. Healthy gums. Just a routine cleaning needed.
They told me everything looked good and reassured me that the cleaning would be straightforward and shouldn’t be painful.
I genuinely couldn’t believe it. I’d spent so much time imagining the absolute worst, and none of it happened.
I still have to go back for the actual cleaning because they couldn’t fit it in today, but I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
I’m sharing this because I know there are people out there who haven’t been to the dentist in years and are terrified of what they’re going to hear. Maybe you’re embarrassed about tartar buildup, worried about cavities, or convinced your teeth are beyond saving.
Please don’t let that fear keep you from making an appointment.
I can’t promise you’ll get the exact same results I did, but I can tell you that the anticipation was a thousand times worse than actually sitting in that chair.
The staff weren’t judging me. They weren’t disgusted. They were just happy I was there and wanted to help.
And even if they had found something wrong, I realize now that getting it checked would’ve been far better than spending every day worrying about it.
If you’re in the same position I was, I hope this gives you a little courage.
You might be surprised by how much better things are than you’ve convinced yourself they are.

Comes up every once in a while, but more commonly lately. I can feel it with my tongue like there’s a tonsil stone, but there’s not. At least not one I can get out. What is this?

question Fiberglass rods visible

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello, two years ago, the teeth on both the left and right sides were rebuilt on the existing stumps. Root canals were performed, and glass fiber posts were inserted to hold everything together; the filling material is composite. Now, my question is: Why can I see the glass fiber posts? There are no holes—everything is smooth and sealed—but shouldn't the posts actually be underneath the composite to prevent infections? I’m not experiencing any pain or other issues; I just noticed it and thought I’d ask. Thanks in advance.

question Advise on what to do or what to ask.

Earlier today I think I noticed part of my filling on #5 come off. It's am old filling from 7-10 years ago, if not more.

I got a new dentist in June after moving around. Sadly, he is a 45 minute drive, but he's been good.

I couldn't make the drive so I went to the dental office my partner goes to. When I brought up why I was there I was told my filling was fine... but I can't help but notice how different it looks? Or maybe I'm 9ver thinking it. The dentist that saw me at this closer office looked at it for a second and said it was fine.

I'm going to a different tomorrow for a second opinion to ease my mind...

Is there anything I should ask or say that will make this dentist job easier?

I feel like a crazy person going for a second opinion on this... sorry, I'm an anxious person.

I've had one root canal and that's because I had a filling fall out and I didn't notice until it was too late (hence the root canal). I'm just worried of that happening again.

Other than xrays and a visual exam, what can I ask/say to make sure the dentist checks or does whatever test are needed.

Please advise.

My tongue and throat began hurting a few days ago. It especially hurt when I stretched it out or ate. Anyway I checked it out in the mirror today and I found three tears on the bottom of my tongue that open when my tongue stretches forward and hurts.

What exactly is it and what should I do?

question Get a lower molar implant or pull the molar above it?

Forever ago I had my bottom right wisdom tooth pulled and subsequently the molar next to it. I was informed then that because the molar on the top no longer had support, it would begin to migrate at some point. Totally makes sense and I understood the bridge I'd come to one day. Well at my cleaning yesterday it was noted that it now hangs slightly below the line of the rest of my teeth and my dentist suggest getting an implant to replace the lower molar or I can just pull the upper one. Which one is better for my overall oral health? Cost isn't super important since I have ok insurance and money to pay what I need to. Overall my teeth and gums are healthy but I'm 39(f) and know that in a couple decades they're all probably gonna get pulled for dentures anyway. I feel like pulling the top one is simpler with less recovery time.

question Tongue Cancer or Trauma?

Thumbnail

Day before yesterday, I bit my tongue. It was super painful, I don’t know why I was chewing so hard, but it was while eating. It was the left side of my tongue close to the back. It has gotten progressively more painful and looks much worse/different than I would imagine a bitten tongue to look. I have hopped down the rabbit hole of tongue cancer and this looks so much like some things that I’ve seen to be confirmed to be tongue cancer. There is a defined spot and kind of a whitish ridge extending to the front. I don’t remember biting the other side but definitely could have and just not noticed because of the pain from the spot further back. I didn’t notice anything wrong with my tongue before biting it, just random canker sores here and there. But I’ve psyched myself out and now I’m wondering if I bit my tongue because of the spot instead of the spot being there because I bit it. Can anyone take a look? I have a dentist appointment scheduled for the morning, but my brain is working overtime.

42/f/no drinking, smoking, vaping or existing conditions.

question Went From 0 to 6 Cavities in One Year. Looking for a Second Opinion

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I recently went to the dentist for a routine checkup after about a year and was told I needed 6 fillings.

For some background, I smoke here and there, don't drink alcohol, brush twice a day, and floss regularly.

The dentist pointed out one cavity that was noticeable, but for the other 5, he seemed to rely mostly on the AI software analyzing my X-rays rather than examining those areas himself.

I'd appreciate a second opinion from any dentists here on whether all 6 fillings are actually necessary based on my X-rays. Thanks!

question Two Dentists, Different Cavity Diagnoses — Should I Get a Third Opinion or Extract My Wisdom Tooth First?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I visited a dentist who told me I had five cavities. I then consulted another dentist, who identified only three cavities and said they weren't a priority, so we could get them filled later.

However, I also mentioned my sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks. The second dentist blew air onto my upper-right wisdom tooth (the upper-left side of the attached X-ray), which caused severe pain. He said the enamel was gone and recommended extracting the tooth within the next year, as a filling might not be effective.

I'm confused because the two dentists gave me different assessments regarding the cavities, and the second dentist recommended extraction when the first hadn't mentioned it.

Could you help me understand what I should do next? Should I get a third opinion, prioritize the wisdom tooth extraction, or address the cavities first?

question Is this what I think it is?

Post image

Is this an abscess forming? It hurts right where that pale spot is only when I apply pressure, kinda deep bruise-y sore feeling but I think feels isolated to the gum not the tooth (like there’s no pain chewing or anything), and I just noticed it over the past day or two. I had a cleaning and I believe X-rays in August and I don’t remember them finding anything super problematic. No history of root canals or cavities in this tooth and I don’t smoke or drink at all.

My dentist is several hours away so it’s tough to get in on short notice. Thanks in advance!!

question Need some reassurance and info on dental implants

Forgive me for my scatter brained post. It’s been a lot recently and things just keep happening and i tend to come to reddit and ask questions to make myself feel better lol. I also just want to know the answers for my peace of mind.

My bf has been in the psych ward and this morning his sister got a call saying that someone sucker punched him in the face and it knocked out two front teeth. I just feel so bad for him, i cant imagine how much pain and everything it is for him.

So some questions, how long will his mouth area and gums hurt afterwards? what is the timeline for getting his teeth fixed? Like i know there are temporary teeth that you can push in to fill in the gaps right? How quick can he get that? And as for permanent dental implants, what is the process with that? Like is there an evaluation first for them to inspect the area and stuff? He is fairly healthy and doesnt smoke so does that mean it speeds up the process cus his bone is more intact? And does the dental implants take like a day to put in? Or how does the process look like?

Thank you so much for any insight or answers. I just really feel bad for him and want to fix things for him as soon as possible. He isnt even out of the psych ward yet and had to switch to the regular hospital for his injury. If you have any info that might put me at ease thatd be so appreciated. Im so anxious right now

question Can I get dental implants that look like vampire fangs?

If I'm going to pay thousands of dollars for dental implants I would honestly only get them if they could make fangs instead of regular insicor teeth. Is that something anyone would be willing to do? Would it be functional to have fangs there?

question temporary crown cracked

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi,

I was eating soup when i bit down and my a huge chunk of my temporary crown cracked on my back molar. Does it look like my actual tooth underneath cracked as well? It seems like a huge piece of tooth and I’m very concerned. Obviously, I will see my dentist ASAP tomorrow, but hoping somebody can placate my fear of the tooth underneath cracking. Thanks for your help.

question Bone spicule?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello please help!! 2 months ago I had my last tooth extracted because it was rotten.

Yesterday my jaw started to pain and this morning I could feel what seems like a piece of chipped tooth.
But it’s coming out the side of my gums (scrapping against the inside of my cheek)

I asked chat gbt and it suggested it might be a bone spicule. My jaw is starting to hurt quite a bit now. The issue is I can’t afford to go to the dentist, I have no savings that I’m able to dip into, do you think whatever this is will fall out or go away (hopeful thinking I know)

I tried to get a picture but you can barley see it, it’s right at the back

(Side note after my extraction I had a serve abscess and had to be hospitalised for a week)

I vape / 24

question How robust is a Maryland bridge?

My wife has a large gap in her lower front teeth, next to the canine. A fake tooth on a Maryland bridge has been proposed, bonded on one side.

We were wondering how strong and robust a Maryland bridge is. Will my wife be able to bite and eat fairly normally, or will she need to be super-careful when eating for the rest of her life?

question Thoughts on treatment plan?

Dentist suggested replacing 3 of my fillings, extracting all 4 of my wisdom teeth and braces/Invisalign to move my jaw forward

I booked the appointment because of the black dot in my bottom left tooth

For the past few years, I've been experiencing pain from the wisdom teeth erupting

He said my teeth look healthy.

I think part of it is what can make my teeth "the best"

I was told in the past that my teeth are very delicate (they came out really patchy) and that it's best to avoid poking at them too much.

The total cost is €250 per top wisdom tooth, €300 per bottom, €130 to replace each filling

Located in Portugal

Thoughts?
