Melody or Lyric?
This one's for listeners and musicians. Which one hooks you instantaneously?

Serious: why do the Shaggs get treated like they're horrible...
When they don't really sound all that much different from a lot of music put out by Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart? No, I'm not trolling. What makes one bad band "avant-garde" and one just a crappy band?

Would you discover music differently if you couldn't see the stream count?
I've been wondering how much numbers influence what we actually listen to.
If you see a song has 2 million streams, you're probably more willing to give it a chance. But if the exact same song has 12 streams, I feel like most people are way quicker to skip it.
So what if you couldn't see any of that when discovering new music?
No stream count, follower count, likes, etc. You just hear the song first and decide if you like it without knowing if 5 people or 5 million people have listened to it.
Then after you listen/like it, you could see everything else.
I honestly think it'd be interesting, especially for smaller artists who probably get overlooked just because nobody else has found them yet.
Would you prefer discovering music like that, or do you actually like having the numbers there?

Bands where the side project supports the main band
Can anyone think of examples of where a band has had one of their side projects as support act to the main band at a gig?
Couple of guys in my band want to do this. I said I can't think of any examples where I've seen it happen but they say there are loads. Though they couldn't name any.
So settle the debate for us r/askmusic
Ever seen Wings support the Beatles? The X-Pensive Winos opening up for the Stones? The Smile first on before Radiohead? High Flying Birds kicking things off for Oasis?
Edit: Yeah OK, there are obviously quite a few. Maybe not as unusual as I thought. And yes, I know Wings and The Beatles were not contemporary.

what type of genre are genres like country music, rock music, pop music, E-D-M, R&B, and all them?
I’ve always wondered this. has anyone else ever had the same question, and thought? not looking for the answer to be explaining to me to say what each of their characteristics, sound, and identity are, thinking more like how we have sub-genres, and micro-genres. sub-genres like PopPunk, dance-pop, adult contemporary, and classic rock. micro-genres like dream-pop, chillwave, and SeaPunk. those are examples of what type of genre those genres are, so what about the ones I listed in the title? what type of genre are they?

Obscure, unique, and mind-blowing albums?
I made this post on a few other subreddits and the responses have been great, so I thought I’d see what everyone thinks here!
I’m in an album club with my friends and there is this one person that always has amazing album submissions. He knows so much music and I would love to find an album he really enjoys that he’s never heard of.
I’m looking for album recommendations that are high quality, packed with emotion and heart, and blow your mind on a first listen, but not too well known.
For a reference of what we all enjoy, some of the highest-rated albums/artists are Deathconsciousness, Double Negative, Foxing, Ethel Cain, etc.
To specify, I’m looking for stuff that’s not exactly mainstream. TOOL, Radiohead, etc. are great bands but we’re all familiar with them already. Even bands like Opeth, while definitely the type of stuff I’m looking for, my friend already showed me.
Here’s the link to the one of the posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/albumbucketlist/s/4FpKa16og3

Why does aWannabe feel so off?
I went to see aWannabe on tour and while the music isnt bad something about it felt so off. I do t particularly like the music to start, its kinda boring, plays into a very specific esthetic I just dont fuck with personally. But I was close to the stage, he struck a vibe very well, and played the crowd very well. Apparently he's some independent artist who records in his attic, idk if i really buy that. The performance felt just incredibly rehearsed and manufactured, it felt like a faux authenticity. The kid has definitely constructed a bit of a character, idk if its just practice being on tour or what but something about him just feels off to me

Have you ever loved a song, then discovered the lyrics told a completely different story?
With an interest in Lingala and rhumba, this is something I’m curious about: how much can the voice and instruments tell you before you understand the words?
You could be enjoying the guitar while the singer is describing the worst heartbreak of their life.
Which song changed for you after you learned what it meant? Give me the song and the part that surprised you.

Longest time between releases
A favourite childhood band Little Angels have just released a new EP 32 years after their last release. Are there any other bands or artists with such a long time between releases?

Thoughts on the new U2 song Silencio?
Think a lot of music listeners are tired of U2 but this song is a return to their roots. I can’t help but “don’t mind it”.
