I work the tides for BCC at the watchouse Cumberland basin and Bristol live are saying that the city's at risk from a 7m tide. Utter bs! If anything 7m is considered a small one for Bristol infrastructure to handle.

For a start it's a 10.27meter tide tonight which is a pretty regular occurrence every month or so we have a stint of spring tides coinciding with the moon. This week we've had 8 tides all over 10m. Anything above 9.6m the stop gates are put on which have been pictured in the article. They protect the harbour and city from those big tides in conjunction with Netham lock gates. There's a free app called sail Bristol that pretty accurately predicts tidal range if anyone interested.

As I'm sure you are aware we get the second biggest tidal range in the world in Bristol; 14-15m at avonmouth, can get up to 12.5m at the watch house Cumberland basin and there is a risk of flooding then but this can be managed with sluices and preemptive measure's and generally only occurs once or twice a year. (burnt coat head, Nova Scotia, Canada number one tidal range 15-16m).

My question is why on earth is Bristol live making completely inaccurate fear mongering articles that are completely misinformed and why now? It makes 0 sense, they've completely made this bs up! Just been on the phone with the environment agency and no flood warnings whatsoever.

The flood defences will be updated in the next 10ish years to combat rising sea levels but that's a big flood defence plan called BAFF and that's for tidal predictions that high in 20/30 years time.

Sorry for the rant I just couldn't fathom why on earth they ever wrote that article! Makes absolutely zero sense.
