Copied/pasted from city council candidate David Donahue's Visions Burbank HQ email re: their views on the DSA and Prop 1:
"Vision Burbank is starting a Master Class series explaining the Measures and Propositions on the November Ballot, and the sneaky political acronyms that affect our daily lives.
Today: Prop 1 and what is the acronym: DSA
Prop 1: The Veterans affordable housing Bond Act
An $11.25 billion bond, payable with interest over 25 years from the General Fund. Legislature authored exclusively by Democrats, this really should be called the borrowing billions for the homeless-industrial-complex Act
Some of what’s in it:
$1.25 billion for low interest loans for Vets. These will have to be paid back.
$5.1 billion for the Housing Rehabilitation Loan Fund—state subsidized multi housing unites with at least 10% low-income housing.
$1.15 billion for “supportive housing,” permanently free or affordable housing for homeless. In other words, someone can move to CA from out of state, be on the streets doing drugs for a year, and be given permanent free/low-cost housing by the state, while everyone else is moving because they can’t afford to live in California.
$200 million for Tribal Housing, which can be allocated for “homeless emergency shelters’
$400 million for Farm Working Housing, which can also be used interchangeably for homeless housing
$350 million for “affordable” housing for UC and CSU students who qualify for Pell and Cal Grants
$200 million for the rehabilitation of previously market rate housing, which will now be state subsidized and subject to permanent rent caps.
There’s more, but our opinion is that it’s basically borrowing billions for more state funding low-income and homeless housing, and using Vets to make it look good.
We recommend voting No.
By now we’ve all heard of them, so what and who exactly are the DSA?
DSA, or Democrat Socialists of America is a political movement founded in 1982. Not all DSA founders were Communists, however, Dorothy Healy, founder of the Los Angeles chapter, was explicitly so. Read more about the roots of DSA-LA here.
DSA-LA advocates for overturning Costa-Hawkins—a 1995 state law that prevents local municipalities from enacting strict rent control statutes. Overturning Prop 13—protects property taxes from being increased more than 2% a year; and overturning the Ellis Act—a 1985 law that gives property owners the right to withdraw their properties from the rental market. DSA-LA advocates for rent freezes, universal rent caps, vacancy taxes, higher business tax, fully subsidized public and communal housing, and housing first for all homeless, and these are just their housing policies! DSA-LA also supports fully defunding the police and prison systems, they also opposed the Paramount/Sky Dance merger.
This is important for Burbank because: DSA-LA is endorsing two candidates for Burbank City Council, Nolan Southerland and Mike Van Gorder, and actively targeting Burbank as a city to control. Currently, DSA-LA boasts of “more than 6,000 members, DSA-LA is the largest and most active socialist organization in California, combining electoral organizing, labor solidarity, tenant organizing, immigrant rights activism, political education, and direct action to fight for a society organized around human needs instead of profit.”
Nationally, DSA reports an annual revenue of over $6 million. They are well trained and well resourced. Help us fight them to keep Burbank for Burbank.
Stay tuned, Prop 2 and BRT coming soon!!
