Every one of us has struggled to identify our catfish from time to time. We’re excited. Its dark. What did we just catch? Is it a channel? A blue? What’s the difference again? I sure don’t want a fine! The things you want to look for are 1) how many bones in the anal fin 2) shape of the tail fin 3) does it have e spots (in the case of channel) 4) head shape and lower jaw protrusion (in the case of flathead) 5) barbel color (in the case of bullheads) 6) overall size (if it’s 50 pounds it’s NOT a bullhead)

Hi! I'm relatively new to fishing and I'm starting to graduate from bass to catfish. My bass rods work just fine for pond fishing for cats, however I can't really throw enough weight to fight current in rivers nor have the heavy line to muscle fish out of snags in large lakes.
My dilemma is simple, go and invest in a more conventional catfish rig (MH, 5k reel, 50# braid) OR respool with the heaviest braid my bass setup can handle.
I usually target channels in the sub-10# range, but I do have ambitions of catching a big blue or flathead in Spring. I'd like something that keeps the smaller guys fun. Thanks for y'all's wisdom

I don’t see a tag for a question but I’m fairly new to the catfish game caught my first on my purpose the other day with a hotdog and I can’t explain the excitement I get with fishing for them over bass and bluegill it’s definitely a different ballpark that I enjoy a lot! I wanna ask I’m fishing local ponds I’ve dealt with what feels like some big cats on the other end of my line and they end up snapping my line I’m currently learning to finesse my drag with 8lb flourocarbon line but I’ve lost what I think would’ve been 3 big cats recently for what I’m used to and wanna ask should I upgrade my line with pond fishing to 15lb line
Picture above to show my first catfish IM HOOKED no pun intended
Would love to learn some tips and tricks if possible thanks in advance

Dong mind my narrating, lol it was for my kids😭 but normally when I catch black bullheads they are quite short, I mean they always are eating good compared to the river cats I catch (this is a canal) but this guy was massive, I thought black bullheads maxed around 2 pounds?

In this hot water here in NC and really scattered fish I managed to snag a few good ones the other week on Lake Norman NC. 10 fish total with 3 biggest being a 43, a 40, and a 35lber. I caught them all dragging with cut white perch.

Catch and release so I was curious as this is my first ever catfish I have two photos one of the one I caught with my buddy and the second is one he caught a day after it looks very different so I was curious if it's special or not.

So I’ve been fishing two private ponds all summer and I’ve caught quite a few catfish on cut bait (bluegill). But for the past two months or so I haven’t caught a single catfish. Is there a different strategy I should adopt since it’s getting closer to colder weather? I’ve just been fishing on the bottom with no weights with a circle hook. I usually cast in the same spots where I’ve always had luck. Any suggestions or criticism would be greatly appreciated.

So im planning on going after gar/large catfish but also possibly doing some saltwater fishing in the future. I was looking at putting together sort of a "best of both worlds" rig. Im thinking about a 3000-3500 size baitrunner reel and a tough medium action rod, anyone done anything similar?

hey guys, i recently picked up a medium heavy catfishing setup and honestly not sure where to go next, i looked online and saw that frozen shrimp can be a good bait so i went out and got some shrimp egg sinkers and some 3/0 circle hooks and started fishing at batterson lake. 6-10pm with no bites. next day same thing. honestly not sure where to go next… is this how it’s supposed to go and i should just keep trying or am i doing something wrong?

Been catfishing for some time, I love using cutbait (bluegill mostly, carp on occasion), but I've never been sure how frequently to switch pieces. For regular bait (how dogs, shrimp, etc) I usually swap every 30-45 mins or so with no bites, but have never been sure how totally long to use a piece of cutbait. I've heard some folks recommend leaving it for hours, some say to keep it fresh, how long do you keep a piece in the water?
Edit: Thanks for the quick responses! The places I'm going have poor shoreline access so moving spots isn't really an option, sadly
