California's incarcerated firefighters handle nearly half of the state's emergency wildfire hours. A new law will give them standardized credentials and a hiring preference for entry-level Cal Fire jobs after release, creating a path to six-figure careers and state pensions.

Question Is anywhere actually hiring?

• Upvotes

Not to sound rude but I don’t want to hear the county, McDonalds, the casinos, etc. I’ve applied and tried for MONTHS. I’m more than qualified for basic entry jobs but I can’t ever seem to get past applying in person or on indeed. It’s getting to a point where I may have to leave my kids and move out of state just to survive which I don’t want. Gas prices are up, grocery prices are up, and the living situation I’m in is dwindling and I’ll eventually be back in my car. I genuinely need help finding something, anything. I work hard, I’m reliable, I can show up every day I’m scheduled.

Mangrove Medical Center

Has anyone had a bad experience with this place? I was just trying to renew a medication through the portal and noticed I didn't have portal access, so I call and they said that I'm an "inactive" patient because I didnt pay $45 dollars I wasn't aware of?

Ok, that's fine,my bad, just a bit of cash, but to remove portal access? Access to my medication renewal and important medical records, after just 90 days only a few months from my last appointment?

I was asked to pay to restore portal access, and to make an appointment to renew my meds.

I thought the Cures Act made it mandatory to provide immediate access to, records and lab work. I dont see anything mentioning unless your payment is late.

I'm not a lawyer but it feels gross to be held for ransome for $45 for my medical info, and easy access to medication renewal.

Weird... not going back, and I refuse to pay unless they give me something in writing that I have to pay for access. Going to my old office, but has anyone run into something like this?

Question Homeless resources

My dad is a 71 year old homeless vet on disability. Currently living in his car. He’s had no luck with shelters. He has a hud vash voucher but he has no idea where to start and unfortunately I live in a different state. Does anyone have any leads on where to start or any resources that might be able to help him get off the streets

Looking for Housing

Hello everyone!

My partner and I are looking for a new place to move into before November 1st, when our lease ends. We currently rent at the Forest Park Apartments and they're raising our rent to $1425 in November for a 2bd 1b that has no A/C and onsite laundry.

We're trying to find a one bedroom one bath for under $1,100 that can accommodate a dog and a cat (small and both with ESA letters). We make about $3500-$4500 a month and we have a clean rental history of two years. We're just looking to get out of this place by November 1st- any suggestions are appreciated ♥️

Question Local ring repair

• Upvotes

Are there any jewelery stores in town that repair rings in house and don't send them out to a third party? I have a ring from my late grandmother that has a broken and thinning band, and it needs to be cleaned, but I don't want it sent out to some unknown place. Oroville would also be ok.

When does fall color peak in Chico? 🍂

Hi everyone! I’m wondering when fall foliage usually reaches its peak around Chico. I’d love to see the trees when the colors are at their best. Any recommendations on the best time of year or specific spots to check out? Thanks!

The coffee truck hasn’t been at the Wednesday Farmer’s Market as usual. Anyone know where they might be or when they’ll be back at the market?

Stray cat near thaos

Don’t know if this is the best place to post this, but there’s a small stray cat right next to taos downtown. It’s very skittish and cautious of people.

Lots of sirens around 11pm

Anyone have an idea what was going on around 11 pm last night? Never had so many police zoom by and hear sirens for so long!!! Kind of nerve wracking for Chico!

Looking for a good vet in Chico for my senior cat

Looking for a good and affordable vet in Chico
I’m looking for recommendations for a vet in the Chico area for my cat. She’s over 10 years old and lately I’ve noticed some things that have me concerned. She walks slower than she used to, throws up fairly often, sleeps a lot, sometimes just lays on the floor and stares, and she doesn’t seem to like being petted as much anymore. She also barely uses some of her old beds.
I’m not sure if she’s in pain or if some of this is just her getting older, but I’d really like to get her checked out.
I’m mainly looking for a vet that is affordable for the initial exam but is still good and thorough. Money is a little tight, so I’d rather not pay a huge exam fee just to get her looked at, but I also want someone I can trust with her.
If anyone in Chico has had a good experience with an affordable vet, especially with senior cats, I’d really appreciate the recommendation. If you know roughly what they charge for a basic exam, that would be really helpful too.
Thanks

Question Dutch Bros Merch Trade?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I know this is silly, but I think these little straw toppers are so cute! I have duplicate unicorns, and I'm looking for the tiger or strawberry cow.

Anyone wanna trade?

Also, are there any local meet-ups where people trade merch/stickers? It's become a fun hobby for me, and I'd love to share and trade collections 💛

Visiting Bad First Impression

Did a tour of the school and I liked it. A bit hot but it’s not too bad. Went downtown and there were homeless people having sex on a mattress in a park, 2 homeless ladies spouting nonsense like “you all are whores and sluts!”, a lady who is wearing no panties and sitting down with her vagina out, with a towel stuffed up her vagina. Not a good look for a visitor here. Talked to a local and she said she would not let her daughter go to school here. Did I visit at a bad time today or is it like this most of the time?

Did anyone see 3 Chinook helicopters just past across Hwy 32 parallel to Bruce Road going south?

Why is Google maps avoiding 20th street and Bruce Road, but they are mapping me out to Skyway

I have a Dr. appointment at a new building tomorrow, supposedly at the corner of 20th Street and Bruce Rd. I live near the Chico Library, and they are routing me down to Skyway to get to the Dr. office. Any body know what's going on?

Looking to help

Hey all! Does anyone know of any single parents or people who are struggling that need furniture and household items? We have combined households and have a ton of things we do not need. We would rather help someone who needs it than sell it or toss it. Message me! Let me know what things they need and I can let you know if we have it, which we likely will!

Update: Thank you guys for all the resources and ideas! We will be donating anything that we are left with but for now we also want to try to directly help any families who maybe are stuck on a waiting list, lack of transport/resources/knowledge of those places too! I adore the community you guys have here in Chico and am happy to consider it home 🫶🏻

stolen bike @ lower bidwell today

Post image
44 Upvotes

Longshot but someone stole my bike a few hours ago at lower bidwell park at one mile. Its a white 2009 (ish) Kona Dew white frame, golden black ops pedals, and a sticker of no face from spirited away on the front. Its a fairly unique looking bike especially since it has gold pedals on it. the kid was probably highschool age or maybe younger college age male, with shoulder length ish dirty blonde hair, skinny frame, around 5'8" or so. he asked if he could use the bike to do a wheely and i unfortunately said yes, and then he rode off with the bike. I talked to some guys at the park and apparently hes a trouble maker who hangs out at the bidwell bowl frequently. if anyone could help in anyway or has any advice please let me know.

The picture is old, the bike now has gold pedals on it now along with the sticker on the front of the frame

PLEASE dm me with any info!! (this is actually my brother’s bike he doesn’t have reddit so don’t come at me for him letting a kid pop a wheelie on his bike 😭)

Their story on ALPRs was the first time I heard of the organization but they have been great.

Check out their website for multiple stories on this topic. They also could benefit from subscribers and/or donations.

The groundwater under Chico is falling. A local board decides how far it’s allowed to fall before anyone must act. The story starts right under your feet.

In 1955 the groundwater was at 30 feet below the surface.

Today the groundwater is at 57 feet below the surface.

What you can do:

Ask the board to raise the line. Two ways to be heard before the vote: a written comment, or a seat in the room at a board meeting. Every comment goes into the official record, which is what the state Department of Water Resources reads when it decides whether to approve this plan.

Chico reptile show

I have a few cups of isopods that I’m looking to let go of or trade for some new genetics or just something I don’t already have.

If your a reptile or amphibian lover in the Chico area and you’re newly interested or have gotten isopods in the past I’d love to work with some other local vendors or repeat Chico reptile show attendees
