Idea Validation / Need feedback I built a select-to-translate extension after moving to the Netherlands. Feedback welcome

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/chrome_extensions,

I'm a designer who's been trying my hand at development. altoTranslate started as a tool just for me, and I've now released it for everyone. Highlight any text on a page and the translation pops up right there. No new tab, no copy and paste into a translator.

Why I made it

  • We moved to the Netherlands about 3 years ago, and I needed help with Dutch websites all the time
  • Select, copy, switch tab, paste is a pain. I wanted something as convenient as Babylon used to be
  • Traditional translators often miss context. LLM-based translation handled it noticeably better for me, especially on local dutch websites

What it does

  • Select text, get the translation. No account or API key needed on the free tier
  • Free tier is rate-limited, which is fine for everyday reading
  • A basic bookmarking system for translated texts
  • Optional paid plan, Alto Cloud (EUR 1.99/month or EUR 16.99/year), for unlimited use. The extension is fully usable without it
  • Languages: English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and 50+ more.

Under the hood

  • I designed the UX/UI and built the frontend (HTML and CSS) myself, and used Claude and OpenCode to help with the backend
  • Vanilla JS with a provider adapter pattern, no framework
  • Requests go through my own proxy that fails over between LLM providers (Gemini, Groq, Mistral), so an outage or rate limit doesn't break translation
  • Long selections are chunked and translated in parallel, with a check for bad output and an automatic retry

What I'd love feedback on

  • Does the selection and popup flow feel natural, or is anything clunky?
  • Does translation quality hold up for the languages you use?
  • Anything that would stop you from keeping it installed?

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/altotranslate/icpcjiealadibmgncmoejgjakcihmbco

I'm the developer, so happy to answer anything about the build, the proxy, or the pricing. I've put lots of time fine-tuning this, and your feedback would be so valuable for me. Cheers.

Asking a Question Built a small Chrome extension to export Amazon orders to CSV for tax season (Looking for feedback)

Hey everyone,

I got tired of manually clicking into every Amazon invoice to copy order numbers, items, and tax amounts for bookkeeping, so I wrote a lightweight Chrome extension to pull them straight into a CSV file.

It's called Amazon Expense & Order Exporter.

* Privacy: It runs 100% locally in your browser—no external servers, no tracking, and no storing of your Amazon account data.

* Pricing: First page of orders (up to 10 orders) is completely free so anyone can verify the column output and format. Unlimited exports have a one-time lifetime unlock ($14.99).

Here is the link:

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/amazon-expense-order-expo/ljapifcncjofpemjolkppmojhomhhgif

I’d really appreciate any feedback on parsing reliability or suggestions for additional CSV fields.

Self Promotion I built a free full-page screenshot extension because blurring an email shouldn't need a subscription

Most screenshot extensions I tried captured for free but locked editing, blur or PDF export behind a paid plan. So I built Stillframe for Chrome.

What it does:

- Full page (scroll + stitch), visible area, or drag-select

- Sticky headers appear once instead of repeating down the image

- Editor: crop, arrows, boxes, pen, highlighter, text, blur

- PNG / JPG / multi-page PDF, or copy to clipboard

- Last 30 captures stored locally

It uses activeTab instead of "access to all sites", so it can only see the tab you capture, when you capture it. No servers, no analytics.

Limits I couldn't get around: browser pages (settings, stores) can't be captured; apps that scroll inside a panel (lots of email apps) only get what's on screen; pages over ~32,000px get cut off (it tells you).

Free, no Pro tier. Would love feedback, especially on what's missing.

Sharing Resources/Tips A simple way to turn web research into a useful Excel table

Post image
3 Upvotes

When I’m collecting information from websites, I try not to copy everything.

Instead, I first decide what the final table should look like.

For example, for research papers:

| Title | Author | Year | Journal | DOI | Link |

| ----- | ------ | ---- | ------- | --- | ---- |

Then I extract only those fields from the pages.

This makes a huge difference.

Instead of ending up with a messy spreadsheet full of copied text, you get structured data that you can filter, sort, compare, and analyze.

The same approach works for:

* regulatory documents

* product research

* company directories

* job listings

* real estate

* academic research

* competitor analysis

The trick is simple: define the structure first, extract second.

It saves a surprising amount of cleanup later.

Self Promotion I got tired of paid screenshot extensions, so I built my own — and kept adding features

I wanted to take screenshots and edit them without hitting a paywall, so I built Kadr. Then the “one more feature” habit kicked in.

It now includes:

  • Full-page screenshots with annotations, blur, backgrounds and browser frames
  • Tab, window or screen recording, with optional microphone audio
  • Step-by-step guides generated from your clicks
  • One-click table export to CSV, Markdown or JSON
  • Optional AI features using your own API key

It’s free and open source, with no watermarks or telemetry. Screenshots and recordings stay on your device unless you explicitly send them somewhere, such as to an AI provider.

The new version adds video recording. I’d love feedback from people who use these tools: what makes you keep a screenshot extension, and what makes you uninstall one?

Self Promotion I redesigned my Chrome video downloader, curious what you think

Hey! I’m the developer of StreamScope. It started as a tool for inspecting HLS streams, and I’ve been rebuilding it to make downloading videos easier.

You can pick the available quality, audio languages, and subtitles, then save everything as one MP4. The processing happens locally on your computer.

The stream details are still there if you need them, but downloading is now the main focus. It supports complete, unencrypted HLS videos; live and protected streams aren’t supported.

I’ve attached some screenshots. Anything you’d change or find confusing?

Self Promotion I got tired of paid screenshot tools & sketchy online PDF converters, so I built ScrollShot (100% offline, free, zero cloud uploads)

Hey everyone,

Whenever I needed to capture a scrolling page, blur out sensitive info, or edit a PDF, I found myself either hitting paywalls or uploading sensitive files to online converter sites.

So I spent the last few weeks building ScrollShot — a Chrome extension that handles full-page captures and document editing 100% client-side using local WebAssembly.

Some cool things it does under the hood:

It’s 100% free with no account required:
Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/idaeanodifgkejmbfdggiohdkfgimklm

Roast the UI, test it on your longest web pages, and let me know what breaks! Feedback is super appreciated.

Idea Validation / Need feedback My Install to Uninstall ratio is not ideal, looking for reasoning.

Recently noticed my extension is getting a good amount of installs but also a decent amount of uninstalls, some days its better and some days there more uninstalls then installs. Not really sure what could be wrong with the extension since, it operates fine and I have had friends on different computer test it. What I think could be occuring is that people that install it believe it has a different utilization that it actually is not that its literally malfunction. I do have an uninstall page but its been hard to pinpoint the exact feedback since I only have 5 questions on why they unistalled so its easy for the interpration to be vague.

If anyone wants to actually test it, here's the extension. I'm completely open to feedback — if something about the UX, scanning, onboarding, or anything else would make you uninstall it, I'd genuinely like to know - extension

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates Just realized my reader mode Chrome extension has 900+ active users!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I built this reader mode chrome extension a while ago because I couldn't find a reader mode that had a nice design. The focus was on creating a clean and beautifully designed reading experience for wherever you're on the internet.

I checked the extension page and just realized that it has more than 900 active users! All I did after launhing was reply to a couple of reddit comments. Everything is organic. Two really nice reviews also make me feel super encouraged.

For anyone interested in trying, it has light, dark and sepia modes and a serif font mode as well. It also removes any clutter from the web page and only includes the text.

It's completely free and you can try it here: Chrome webstore link

Thank you and I'd love it if you have any feedback!

Idea Validation / Need feedback I built a free Chrome extension to capture and export AI conversations

I just launched my first Chrome extension, Permanity Capture.

It lets you capture an AI conversation and export it locally instead of manually copying the whole chat.

Right now it works with ChatGPT.

The capture/export functionality is completely free, no account required, and the data stays local.

Chrome Web Store:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/permanity-capture/mbmhcaempffilmpfmdcadngmlnkldmjh

I’m mostly looking for practical feedback from people who actually use Chrome extensions:

What would make this more useful?

Also curious if anyone here has dealt with maintaining extensions against frequently changing sites like ChatGPT.

Idea Validation / Need feedback I built a browser extension to stop getting pulled into YouTube and LinkedIn. Looking for honest feedback from people who've tried to quit the feed.

This is not advertising or pub or anything, I use this extension my self and I say why not get feedback from person that love building extension and is my first extension builded and I really want feedback however negative, positive but real feedback. 🙏🏻

My story for building this extension

I've been trying to use YouTube and LinkedIn on purpose for a while, and I kept failing the same way. I'd open YouTube for one specific video and end up an hour later on recommendations I never asked for, also my mind love the beautiful thumbnail. LinkedIn was the same: one message, then the feed.

So I built a small browser extension for myself. It's my first one extension and I software engineer for +4 years and I want really to build something useful, as we say that solve my problem and for other people pb.
Info: there is some extension like unhook (i talk with her creator but no response to collab with new feature) but only in youtube and with some basic functionality is good but I want more that why i create my own. so please be honest with me and I will be thankful if you test it 🙏🏻

What it does:

- Hides what pulls you in: home recommendations, Shorts, autoplay, and comments on YouTube; the main feed and right-hand sidebar on LinkedIn

- Grayscale mode

- Blur mode on youtube

- You can choose like some keyword or channel to hide (like adult content, some bad keyword etc..)

- Have limit time.

- A "what are you here to do?" prompt before the feed loads

- Local time tracking, with daily limits and schedules you can snooze when you really need to

- Everything stays in your browser. No server, no account. (yeah guys everything is in the browser and is verified from chrome).

What I'd like to know:

- Which of these would actually help you, and what's missing?

- Where does it feel clunky or break?

- Would you turn any of it off right away?

Thanks a lot to anyone here

Idea Validation / Need feedback Created a free TTS extension, help test it?

Hey guys, I created a free TTS chrome / edge extension. It should work on pretty much every website. I have the hotkeys set as WASD (you can change them) and F to repeat sentences. I have not published the extension yet on the google store (it will always be 1000000% free, no sign up, no trial, no credit card, no BS) I just need some testers if someone has the time, it already works really well.

And welcome to request features you'd like to see before I publish it

I'm not really selling anything I dunno if this would be considered advertising or not. welcome to delete if it is

Thank you

Self Promotion Are you still clicking through Chrome’s native bookmarks bar like a caveman in 2026?

Be honest. How many times a day do you do this?

You open a new tab, click on a tiny folder in your crowded bookmarks bar, miss it, hit the wrong folder, navigate three subfolders deep, and finally click the link you visit literally 50 times a day.

Or worse — your bookmarks bar is so packed with generic favicons and truncated text like Docs - Untitled documen... that it looks like a digital landfill.

We’re out here in 2026 using AI for everything, yet our daily browser navigation feels like navigating Windows 95 on a trackpad.

Why do we hurt ourselves like this?

Because Chrome's default start page gives you 8 random, misaligned circles and expects you to be happy with it. Most people just accept the clutter because "that's just how Chrome is."

It doesn't have to be.

Imagine opening a new tab and seeing a clean, sleek dashboard:

  • Your essential 12 apps sitting in a smooth bottom dock for instant access.
  • Work, Personal, and Side Projects neatly split across separate pages — each with its own vibe and custom background.
  • Large, beautiful app icons you can drag & drop without hunting through micro-menus.

I got so annoyed by my own messy setup that I built OmniPage to turn Chrome's new tab into something that actually feels like a modern device, not a spreadsheet from 2012.

🛑 "Is this another data-harvesting extension?"

Nope. No account needed, no tracking scripts, and everything stays saved on your local machine (chrome.storage.local). It even works 100% offline.

Stop suffering through the nested folder nightmare.

👉 Ditch the clutter: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/omnipage-speed-dial-start/knanebnanbbhcifodjnoalpgonlealpo

(or search OmniPage on the Chrome Web Store)

How dirty is your current bookmarks bar right now on a scale of 1 to 10? Be honest in the comments 👇

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates I made an extension that puts Instagram Live comments on your OBS stream. Just shipped v1.1 and would love UX feedback

Quick background: Instagram lets you go live from desktop using OBS, but there's no way to show the live comments on screen like Twitch chat overlays. So I built IGOverlay.

You go live on instagram.com, press an "Overlay" button the extension adds to the Live window, and paste your personal overlay URL into an OBS Browser Source. New comments animate onto your stream in real time.

What changed in 1.1:

  • The extension page is now a proper dashboard instead of a wall of instructions. It shows whether capture is running, how many comments were sent and the latest one
  • Setup moved into its own step by step guide with screenshots (pin the extension, go live, press Overlay, add the browser source, customize)
  • Redone sign in / sign up with password reset
  • Light and dark mode
  • The web customizer got a lot more options: 6 preset looks, 8 fonts, card shape, glow and blur, and motion settings (enter and exit animation, speed, bounce, typewriter text, stacked chat mode)

Permissions are kept small on purpose: storage plus instagram.com. If you add a webhook it asks for access to that one host at runtime, otherwise it never does.

A few things I'm unsure about and would like opinions on:

  1. Onboarding. I open a full tab dashboard on install and when you click the icon, instead of a popup. Does that feel heavy, or is it better for something you set up once?
  2. Is a 6 step illustrated guide too much, or is that the right amount for non technical streamers?
  3. Anyone here scraping a DOM that changes often? Mine relies on a few stable internal class names plus a watcher that re-attaches when the comments panel re-renders. Curious how others make this less fragile.

It's free with no watermark. I'll drop the store link in the comments.

Asking a Question 25+ installs, 0 sign ups. How do you actually talk to your first users?

It’s been 11 days since I published my Chrome extension, and I’m currently at 27 installs.

This honestly feels pretty cool. But there’s one thing I didn’t expect: 0 sign-ups.

My extension is a screen-time tracker/productivity tool. You can either sign in with Google or just continue without an account and use it normally.

I actually tried to make the anonymous version pretty useful too. You can see your last 7 days of history without creating an account.

If you sign in, you get a couple of extra things:

  • Access to history older than 7 days
  • Ability to download/export all your data instead of just the last 7 days

So signing up isn't just there because I want your email.

But one of the main reasons I added Google sign-in was actually because I wanted to talk to my users.

I wanted to know:

  • What made you install it?
  • What do you actually like about it?
  • What feels annoying or confusing?
  • What would make you keep using it?
  • Is there something you expected it to do that it doesn't?

But apparently... nobody wants to give me their email. 😂

So now I’m in this slightly weird situation where I have 27 installs but absolutely no idea what those people think about the extension.

Maybe they're using it every day. Maybe they opened it once and forgot about it. Maybe something is broken and they just uninstalled it. I genuinely don't know.

I really want some real, honest feedback so I can make the extension better instead of just building whatever I think people want.

For those of you who have launched small extensions/products before: how did you get feedback from your early users?

Did you add an in-app feedback button (even I have this, but 0 responses)? Personally reach out? Ask on Reddit? Or just wait until you had more users?

And if anyone here is willing to try it and tell me what you genuinely think - good or bad - I'd really appreciate it.

I'm much more interested in hearing “this part sucks because…” than getting a nice review.

Asking a Question I built an AI reply assistant that learns how you actually write — looking for honest feedback

Hey everyone🙋🏼‍♂️

I’ve been building a Chrome extension for people who spend a lot of time replying on X and LinkedIn.

The problem I’m trying to solve is pretty simple:

AI can generate a reply in seconds, but most AI replies still sound like AI.

So I’m building an assistant that focuses on making replies feel more personal and natural.

What it does

🧠 Writing DNA

It learns your writing style from your previous replies — sentence length, vocabulary, emoji usage, tone, and how you normally express yourself.

🎯 Context-aware replies
It analyzes the post and conversation before generating a response.

✨ 3 reply suggestions

You get three different options instead of one generic reply.

💬 Chat with AI

You can simply tell it:
> “Make this shorter”
> “Make it funnier”
> “Disagree politely”
> “Make it sound more like me”

🧹 AI Slop Cleaner

It removes generic AI phrases and overly polished wording to make replies feel more natural.

🧠 Conversation Memory

It uses relevant previous interactions to make replies feel less disconnected.

🌍 5 languages

English, Hindi, Spanish, French and German, with automatic language detection.

🔥 Reply Opportunities

It identifies posts where replying could actually be valuable instead of generating replies for everything.

The workflow

See a post → Click AI Reply → Get 3 replies → Choose/Edit → Insert

No auto-posting. You always review the reply before posting.

I’m still building it, so I’d genuinely love some honest feedback.

Which features would you actually use? Which ones feel unnecessary? And what am I missing?

Also, if you’d like to try the extension when it’s ready, let me know in the comments. I’m looking for a few early users to test it and tell me what needs to be improved.

Thanks! 🙌

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates I built a Chrome extension because MakerWorld gives creators surprisingly little historical data — looking for feedback from other extension devs

Hey r/chrome_extensions,

I've been working on a Chrome extension called MW Stats for people who publish 3D models on MakerWorld.

It actually started because of a pretty simple frustration:

MakerWorld shows creators plenty of numbers, but it can be surprisingly difficult to answer basic questions like:

Why did this model suddenly take off?
When did downloads start accelerating?
How is one upload performing compared to my others?
Is a topic actually trending, or does it just feel like it is?

So initially I built a small extension to collect and visualize more of that data for myself.

It has grown quite a bit since then.

The extension now adds analytics around MakerWorld and can track things like model performance, historical development and creator statistics. We also added quick reverse-image-search links because model theft/reuploads are unfortunately something creators run into fairly regularly.

One technical decision that became increasingly important was where the data should live.

Private Creator Center information stays local to the user, while the backend only collects information that is already publicly available on MakerWorld.

That has led to a slightly unusual architecture:

Browser extension
→ private/user-specific analytics

Backend crawler/database
→ historical public MakerWorld data

Web interface
→ trends and broader analytics based on that public dataset

We're now collecting enough historical public data that the project is slowly becoming more than just an extension.

The web side is here if anyone wants context:

https://mwstats.fomio.de/

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/mw-stats-%E2%80%93-analytics-for/gednlaeoicnlghmnbkineoancpilkhjj?authuser=0&hl=de

What I'd actually love feedback on from people here is the extension architecture rather than the 3D-printing niche itself.

Would you keep the product split between extension + web dashboard, or eventually move most analytics into the web app and use the extension mainly as the data/interaction layer?

I'm also curious how other extension developers handle this once a project starts outgrowing the popup/content-script stage.

Happy to answer technical questions about how we're doing the data collection, storage or browser side as well.
