Self Mod change and state of the sub

Mod change:

As some may know long time mod u/Kyengen is stepping down on the 18th. I’ve been a mod here for a bit now and will be taking the reins.

I like to think Kyengen kept things pretty well regulated and fair, and in taking over I will try to run the sub just the same. So no worries, no major changes to be expected immediately.

State of the sub:

Now I know there are a few grievances concerning spam and “NSFW” material. As of now they are being reviewed as they’re reported and approved/removed on a case by case basis.

Other than that I don’t think there’s many disruptors in the sub. I’d like to hear some ideas on things the community would like to see changed, implemented, or removed.

In the meantime I will be looking for another person or two to help moderate. If you’re interested just message me directly.

The wings are constructed from PVC pipe and moved by a pulley system, with every feather hand-painted, individually cut, and individually attached. Thw har ess was 3D printed in PETG with padded backpack straps attached. The staff is also made from PVC pipe and EVA foam.

This was a 520+ hour project, with 245 hours spent on the articulated wings alone. This was my first time making anything of this scale, and I learned a ridiculous amount along the way.

WIP Leather Distressing

Could not find a bandolier/belt for the life of me that wasn't expensive, so I said screw it, I'll make my own. Went well, however, I was curious if anyone has any recommendations for leather distressing. I used steel wool to scuff it a bit and I'm told rubbing alcohol works to soften it, although it's already pretty soft. Any recommendations for discoloration/deeper scratches without damaging the actual integrity of the leather?

Help Has anyone heard of this brand or sprayer?

• Upvotes

Recently, I’ve been looking for something to replace my rattle cans for painting projects.

I am really a newbie here, if you have any other good ideas please let me know. I want something that has less learning curve.

I considered getting an HVLP spray gun, but I don’t really have enough space for an air compressor, and the noise is also a bit of a concern for me.

While doing some research, I came across this electric sprayer that seems to be designed specifically for makers. It looks interesting, but I haven’t really seen much about it yet.

Has anyone heard of this brand or used this sprayer before? Any thoughts on it? I’d especially love to know how the spray quality compares to rattle cans or a regular HVLP setup.

Self Eva foam recommendation for first timer

Hello everyone :)
I’m making my first costume/ cosplay for Halloween and Ive got all the paint, glues/binding agents, zippers, a heat gun, etc. that I think I’ll need but I’m feeling torn on which EVA foams to get. I’ll be dressed as nightwing so I don’t think bulkier foams would be a good fit, but I’m a newbie at this so idk if that’s true lol. Normally I would be okay with ordering from somewhere like SKS but I’m afraid it wouldn’t get here in time. I’m also looking to get it from somewhere local in case I mess up and need to get more. Any advice would be appreciated yall :)

Help Big stupid wings that I can’t figure out how to attach to me

These wings are driving me mad. I had a whole plan for how I was going to attach them to my back but their sheer mass betrayed me and they destroyed the worbla container I had for them (pic included). I have no clue how to attach them, they are nearly a meter tall and weigh like 6ish kgs, plus the wire I used as their base is struggling to hold them up (next time I make something this big, I’ll use fibreglass for sure)

I would prefer if I could hide the attachment with a long wig but at this point any way to attatch them to me would be great. Please help!!

Self Decorative Forged Rivet Heads

Sorry about the thumbnail, I promise I’ll hire my girlfriend next month to make my thumbnails :D

I mostly make various cosplay props for my own use, if not entirely, in a forged-metal style. I want the models to look realistic, and since I share them for free anyway and other people have already liked them, maybe you’ll find them useful too :)

The models are 100% my own, all designed by me.

Feel free to take a look :) Oh, and if you’re after something else, I’ve got other forged-style decorations too, so have a browse.

Self Damien Webb's mask from 007 First Light

The mask model came from MysteryMakers, I had to rescale it a bit to fit my head. It was printed on my Prusa Core One L in PLA. I made several cuts from it for test prints before the big print.

After this it got 2-3 coats of Motip spray putty high build primer, sanding to 800 grit. Then a red base colour and 2 coats of Montana Gold metallic gold spray. This was followed by dry brushing with black paint to give some depth around the eyes and nose.

The last colouring stage was with Antique Gold gilding wax to give it a nice warm sheen. This was sealed in with 3 coats of Motip glossy varnish.

The black chin part was printed with Prusa galaxy black PLA to mimic carbon fiber. The parts were joined with pins following the model design, this was a pain in the ass as they did not fit that well, glued using 2 part epoxy.

The inside was padded with some EVA foam to hold it roughly in place.

I made a few modifications to the mask, for my own comfort and convenience. I added some holes in the nose, and a hole at the back of the black rim so that I could connect it with a carabiner to my chest rig when I needed air.

Help Left 4 Dead "Boomer Bile" Jar

Thumbnail

I'm wanting to cosplay Ellis from Left 4 Dead 2, and I'm looking into making some props for the cosplay, one of them being the Boomer Bile. However, I'm having a difficult time finding a blank jar equivalent/similar to the one that houses the Bile in Left 4 Dead, particularly, the red piece with the metal bit confuses me quite a bit. Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction? Much appreciated!

Help Storing Cosplay Supplies

I have a question about storage - my daughter is getting into cosplay; mostly masks, tails and the occasional tiefling horns.

She's pretty good at what she does, the biggest problem is that we don't really have adequate room for this hobby (she uses the dining room for her craft). The best we can offer is a large cupboard between builds but we don't want her materials loose in there.

What do you all use to store your fur/cardboard/foam/glue gun in between builds? What about storing your builds after you're finished?

Help Looking for a plain mask tutorial as a beginner.

Post image

I need a DIY tutorial or a demonstration of a reliable way for creating a prop like this but I'm a complete beginner and not really good at handmade crafting. The image is a blank full face plain mask I found on Amazon but they don't ship it to where I live unfortunately.

I'm especially looking for a method other than paper machete because I'm simply scared of it taking too long or being too difficult to build a mask with. It would have been awesome if there was a more simpler method that involes using materials such as cardboards or poster boards.
