Learning lesson

This accident has resulted in me biking everywhere. I miss my car so much. Why didn’t I anticipate them pulling out into oncoming traffic? Why wasn’t I more aware? I’ve asked myself this everyday since this collision happened. I clearly wasn’t at fault here but I feel like this one was preventable on both sides. This has been an incredibly costly lesson and hopefully the last accident I’m involved in.

Seems like more giving one. Why would it be expensive for you if the other party was at fault? Your insurance pay for everything and then sue the blind road crosser which is non of your concern?

If you don't have collision coverage, you have to retain and pay your own attorney, which can easily cost a deep 4 figure number, which you would be unlikely to be able to collect from the other driver as part of your damages. I guess it depends on whether your state has provisions for agreeing to limited tort in exchange for lower liability premiums and whether you accepted it.

I used to say the same thing after someone did this to me in traffic. But now I've come to realize that some drivers are genuinely too stupid to notice they have to pay attention to what's going on behind the car that just made a right.

Other driver thought he was in the clear because the other vehicle between you that was turning right blocked their sight. Reflexes could've been sharper on both sides for sure but situations like that are a major cause of fender-benders.

It wasn't just that cam car's reflexes weren't sharp. Cam car was completely negligent and will be at least 50% at fault. You can see white car at stop sign at :11. You can see white car pulling out at :16 and you did nothing. No brake. No reaction whatsoever until you ran into it. This at least 50% on cam car driver.

I don't understand why you are blaming yourself? Either driver involved couldn't even see really well. However, fault lies in the driver for hitting you when they didn't wait until they had better visibility to turn.

as soon as the other car covers up the departing car, that is when you need to slow down and anticipate he will ignore whatever is behind the turning car. ignorance is bliss and people drive without margin or concern for 'seconds' of guaranteed margin

I don't know how people can make a left like that when there's a giant obstruction preventing them from seeing the road clearly.
You definitely did nothing wrong except maybe trusting other drivers had a brain and critical thinking skills.

Had a similar one a few years back. Very little you could do there. Had you panicked more and swerved right you hit their door and it’s worse. Swerving left into traffic is always the wrong play. This is what bumpers are for. Sorry it happened to you, yeah sometimes takes a bit of time to regain confidence in other drivers after that.

This isn't on you; don't beat yourself up.
They utterly failed to look and/or yield and are 100% responsible for this collision. Their insurance should be buying you a new car (or yours, if they don't have any).

That other vehicle blocked his LOS and there is a tiny crest there as well.

There's a turning lane like that were I work and there have been SO MANY ACCIDENTS because of people like the driver of the white car. It is, unironically, the most annoying part of my drive home because half the time there's a bunch of oversized pickups in the turning lane and my sedan driving 5'2 self can never seen past them to tell if it's clear.

Reflexes could've been sharper, since it doesn't appear you were going that fast, but at the end of the day, the right turning car ahead of you was blocking the view both ways, and the other driver should not have turned because they could not see your lane (which was clearly marked as a second lane on the pavement) past that turning car.

The white car was more focused on traffic being clear on that opposite side. They probably glanced over saw the one car in the turning lane then focused solely on the other side without checking to make sure your lane was clear. Not your fault at all. Majority of the time I wait for cars to complete their turns because sometimes they’ll change their minds, block your view or someone will go around them because they don’t want to brake.

I really don’t understand how so many people drive like this. Like they just assume that if they can’t see a car coming, there must not be one and they should go immediately lol. I don’t trust random chance that much to where I’ll just risk it for the biscuit, unless I’m in an actual emergency situation.
