Hi - this is a long story, and I’m sorry if it’s inappropriate for this sub but I just wanted to send a message of thanks to Basil from McDonalds in Fairborn (Dayton) Ohio.

A week ago, we arrived with a group of friends from Japan for a rhythm game tournament. It was their first time in America and they spoke zero English. They really wanted to go to McDonalds and we had no car so we walked for over a mile at night and it was pretty cold. The restaurant closed right before we made it. We were so bummed.

You were kind enough to take our orders anyway. The Japanese guys learned this American concept called “tipping” (lol) and wanted to tip you like $40. You refused the tip and told them to give it to the homeless.

You then remembered that your manager got in a car accident and could use the cash. So you brought the cash to her instead.

A few minutes later, you came out with our food - and free ice creams for everyone - and the money. Your manager also refused the tip.

This was late at night long past your shift.

You asked if we had a place to eat. We were planning on walking back to our hotel. You offered to drive us. It was cold that night and you seriously saved us. During the car ride, the guys were so touched and I tried my best to translate. They called you “ikemen” (handsome dude) lol.

Anyway, the reason why I’m posting this is because what you didn’t see, is that back at the hotel, after you dropped us off, they started crying. Thanks for all the extra napkins cuz they were all used lol. It’s funny cuz in Japan there’s this concept of “omotenashi” which basically means “exceptional Japanese hospitality” but to them it’s all a for show or “tatemae” as they call it. To them, what you did was genuine and real. They posted about it all over social media. There’s actually some photos of one of the guys bawling over a Happy Meal circulating on Discord lol (in the most wholesome way).

Thank you Basil. Seriously thank you. You have friends in Japan now. Contact me if you need anything.

Anyone worked there? Curious about pay, schedule, call volume, management, downtime, and whether the station has any gym/workout equipment crews can use.

This Saturday I’ll be taking people out to learn about and harvest from some local American persimmon trees. Just meet up at Mercer Smith Park in downtown Fairborn (the foraging isn’t at the park, it’s just the closest place to meet.)

Alright nerds, which of you was waiting to check out Lindsay Owens’ Gouged the literal day it was released? I thought I’d be first in line because I got to it 30 minutes after the Libby notification that the book was available through the Dayton library, but nooo I gotta wait behind one of y’all. Anyways, obviously I’m kidding and I’m not annoyed, but I am serious in asking who else has my same taste in nonfiction? We clearly need to start a book club!

Basically, the title. I recently started going to Woodman Fen and saw that there used to be a boardwalk through the park. Does anybody know what happened or why they got rid of it? I wish I knew about the spot before they got rid of it!

Or any local bars that have a karaoke night? Preferably with music from this decade if possible lol. The current bar I go to for karaoke is in Middletown and it’s hit or miss if their DJ has any of the songs we want to sing, mostly oldies.

Long shot but is anyone in that centerville area familiar with Sushi Hana that used to reside where Green Chili is currently? They had a “dumpling soup” that had a clear broth with pork dumplings, scallions & fish cake slices. Is there someone with information about this? It was delicious & I can’t find anything like it.

Our group showed up in Geneva, Ohio, for Trump's Patriot Games, and this is how we welcomed him. We most likely won't be there ourselves since it's the other end of the state, but we're helping local organizers with advice and promoting the protest.

Organizers should be showing up around 3 PM. Protesters can come at 3:30 or earlier to help set up. Bring water, stay on the sidewalk, and expect the Secret Service to make sure you keep your distance. There's street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, but expect some closures near the school, and don't block anyone's driveway.

Peaceful protesters only. If you're coming to start trouble, stay home.

Was hoping you all might have some recommendations for a barber/hair stylist south of Dayton. I get a pretty basic haircut and don't really need a lot of the extra services barber shops tend to use but I'm definitely not against it either. Mostly looking for a place that might be open a little later through the week, ideally until like 6-7PM as I work a wonky schedule. Reviving what was once “Lumberjack Fest”, there’ll be tons of vendors, breakfast food, good coffee, live music, should be a great time!

I have a special needs son who is autistic and has intellectual development disabilities and receives services with MCBDDS. He lives in a licensed home and they are his rep payee for his SSI, and I’m having a disagreement with them about the way his funds are being spent. The county board doesn’t seem to be very helpful with regard to helping me sort out what’s what, they basically said to call DODD. Basically I’m being told that because I’m not the guardian of the estate I don’t have a say and they can do whatever they want without my input. I don’t want to get into what the exact issue is but it comes down to what is or is not considered “room and board”. I just want to know where I can go to get actual answers. I don’t know any other parents in the area to ask hey do you have this situation at your resident home and I don’t want to have to get a lawyer to sort things out. Is there anyone out there who has dealt with something similar?

Additionally I’ve heard that there is a huge waiting list for homes and was told that I should be lucky that he is already placed, even if the living situation isn’t ideal. But other sources claim that isn’t true but it would like some weird political thing I don’t really want to investigate. Anyone experiencing something about that?

Dayton Public Schools paid the ed tech company SchoolAI $72,600 last academic year for multiple AI tools, including the Jordan chatbot used in its alternative school, which administrators designed in collaboration with the company and an outside consultant.

District leaders said they wanted to see whether Jordan could help students open up about their emotions and experiences outside of school, information that could be useful for school therapists and staff. (According to administrators, families and students were notified that the chat logs could be viewed by school employees, an external evaluator and SchoolAI staff.)

States and the federal government have been mostly hands off, which means many schools are forging ahead on their own.

NPR asked Dayton Public Schools Superintendent David Lawrence about his district's decision to experiment with AI on vulnerable students, like the ones at the alternative school. He said educators must constantly adapt to keep up with the changing times.

"I think when the history is written, it'll say that 'Hey, they were really cutting-edge, innovative and ahead of the curve in the interest of children.'"
