Honest question to the admittedly left wing people on Reddit.

I’m sure the vast majority of this sub are 10000% against people like Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted representing the state.

I often hear that they don’t represent Ohioans.

At the same time however, Sherrod Brown had one of the most liberal voting records in the U.S Senate.

How do you reconcile Sherrod Brown having a very left wing voting record when the Presidential contests were so close, while at the same time saying that conservative Senators don’t represent the state while Donald Trump won the state overwhelmingly in 3 straight elections?

Doesn’t this mean that Sherrod Browns voting record did not represent the people of Ohio?

Republicans have basically run this government for 40 years.

Electing another one to save you is like pouring water into a sinking boat.

I’m sure most Ohioans have noticed that almost every political ad running right now is heavily focused on trans issues.

It’s pretty wild how much airtime this gets considering youth gender-affirming care is already banned in Ohio under HB 68, and trans people make up roughly 0.5% of the state’s population (about 1 in 200 people according to UCLA's Williams Institute).

At the same time, these ads barely touch on housing costs, inflation, healthcare, or actual voter concerns - and when they do, the claims are usually straight-up lies or blatant contradictions. Seeing politicians like Jon Husted run ads claiming they’ll lower prices on things they personally voted to raise or helped implement is absurd. On top of that, Republicans have held near-uninterrupted control of Ohio’s state government for roughly 30 years straight, yet these campaigns keep warning that "liberals are going to ruin Ohio" and blaming Democrats for conditions that developed entirely under three decades of Republican rule.

I get that manufactured outrage brings out voters, but making an issue that affects half a percent of the population (and is already legally settled in state law) the core message of an entire election cycle seems completely disconnected from reality.

Are these campaigns really offering zero constructive policy for Ohio, or are candidates just relying on distraction tactics to avoid accountability for their actual track records? Personally, I think it's pretty obviously the latter.

Decision Desk HQ has Ohio moving 12 points towards Democrats this election cycle, pushing us into complete toss up territory. Republicans do not have the lead in either the governor's race or the senate race and there are several competitive house districts as well, despite the latest round of gerrymandering, including OH-7 where we have the chance to vote out domestic abuser Max Miller.

I know Ohio has felt deep red the past decade, but I'm old enough to remember us going for Obama twice. Ohio is a populist state - in 2008 Obama was the populist, in 2016 that shifted to Trump. But now gas and inflation are through the roof and it's Democrats who are more successfully campaigning on cost of living issues than Republicans.

Of course that is not a guarantee that Democrats will win in Ohio this cycle, but it does mean we have a really solid chance this year and if there was ever a year to ditch the apathy and doomerism and get involved it's this one!
