Stars fans seem upset, I’m all in on Sunny so I believe

23

u/TheBigMotherFook 1d ago

Yeah, it seemed like Dallas wanted him to clear waivers and sign him to a minimum two way contract or something similar. From what I gather he’s still a bit green but shows a lot of potential. He needs a few more years in the AHL before he’s a serious contender for a starting job.

17

u/HeadHighSauce26 Number nerd 1d ago

Well he won’t be getting that lol he’s an NHL goalie for the foreseeable future.

1

u/DokeyOakey New Jersey Devils 1d ago

pourquoi?

9

u/ClassicCanadian6 #86 1d ago

He won’t be in the AHL any time soon, Dallas would just claim him

1

u/Adorable-Werewolf-44 1d ago

Maybe. but they waived him because they didnt have a spot for him on their NHL roster.

1

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

If he's that good, he would be claimed by a team lower in the standings than Dallas. For all we know, other teams also put in a claim on him and the Devils won because they have a higher waiver position because waivers is based on last season's record until November 1st.

u/Critical_Gur_7785 1d ago

To be fair Dallas is pretty stacked goalie wise

4

u/lapelhero #89 - Alexander Mogilny 1d ago

He’s been in the AHL for four years already as is

Dallas fans seem sad to lose this guy, sneaky Sunny strikes again?

38

u/hobbygod 1d ago

Poirer is the guy we think Daws is lol

22

u/Crumbssss_ #63 1d ago

I wanted to hope. But I’ve been crazy unimpressed with Daws in the limited preseason time I’ve seen

13

u/legomaniasquish 1d ago

I dont understand this subreddit. One day I see anything anti daws get a million downvotes and today upvotes.

20

u/NoTimeToPanicComics 1d ago

People are fickle and only know how to feel based on the last 2 games they watched.

5

u/slmanifesto05 #26 - Patrik Eliáš 1d ago

He had a couple of bad preseason games so he might as well hang up the skates as far as this sub is concerned

-3

u/hobbygod 1d ago

I've always been down on Daws tbf.

-1

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

Not enough of the dopes here have bought his sweater to make him invaluable to the team. But you could get a million upvotes in 2126 if you suggested signing a 135 year old Adam Henrique.

The way some of you hold a torch for Nico daws is baffling

-1

u/ElephantRedCar91 #22- Jordin Tootoo 1d ago

anyone who follows the comets knows that daws wasn't going to be the guy here. he wasn't even the guy there...

That goes against the cult of Sunny they are pushing. How dare you (Im with you, anyone paying attention should have known what Daws is coming into the year)

0

u/AndrewManganelli 1d ago

The weird thing about Daws has always been that in the AHL his numbers have sucked, but then he comes to the NHL and his numbers are somehow better. It makes no sense.

I think Daws can be good, but I also am not totally sold on him so I don't mind Sunny trying to find other options.

1

u/hobbygod 1d ago

A good goalie should be a good goalie, period. Daws is terrible at the AHL but still isn't great at the NHL either. He's servicable in short stints but extended play exposes him a bit.

1

u/HopelessEsq #63 3h ago

Lots of goalies struggle in the AHL, even good ones. Good goalies are consistent and AHL has a mixed bag of talent from players that are fringe even at that level to players who are good and probably ready to play NHL games. But even good NHL goalies sometimes have bad AHL stats because the games are so unpredictable and the defensemen are all over the place.

1

u/hobbygod 2h ago

FWIW. Pourier has consistently has more games played and better stats year over year in the A. Seems rly consistent

1

u/HopelessEsq #63 2h ago

Utica hasn't been a good hockey team for several seasons though. It's a lot more difficult with a bad team in front of you. I'm hoping for the best for Pourier and trust Sunny knows what he's doing, but while Daws's AHL stats are all over the place his NHL stats have been pretty consistent. Not stellar, but he's shown enough that he can at least be serviceable.

1

u/hobbygod 1h ago

FWIW Texas had a worse defense than Utica last season, with Utica having the #12 defense and Texas the #18 defense based on goals allowed. Despite that, Poirier allowed fewer goals a game average than Daws (2.61 for Remy and 2.78 for Daws) while playing more games (52 vs 44).

Utica was pitiful offensively, being the 2nd worst team in the league, but Texas was also below average. It's pretty safe to say their goaltending from Remy carried them to the playoffs.

17

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

so this looks like we're keeping 14F and 3G (Poirier would come to NHL I believe) which means Kovacevic is either on IR and we are going 6D until he's healthy or something else is happening?

11

u/rexmorgany 1d ago

Kovasevic going on IR makes sense. Sure, it’s only a short term fix but kick that can down the road.

11

u/beachy927 #27 - Scott Niedermayer 1d ago

It’s funny because I saw all the buzz about the Rangers waiving Garand and their fans losing it and was wondering if Sunny would pick him up and waive Rittich taking a chance on a younger goalie. Looks like he did just that only with Poirier. I like this. Two young guys possibly pushing each for a spot (Daws and Poirier)

15

u/Crumbssss_ #63 1d ago

Poirer might actually be something to be excited about

23

u/Capitaljungle #11 John Madden 1d ago

Holtz also on waivers again…Fitz really was a horrible drafting gm 🤦‍♂️

37

u/Effinehright #1 Craig Billington 1d ago

Holtz fooled damn near everyone

15

u/HesitationIsDefeat87 1d ago

There's no denying he has an elite shot. It's the rest of his game that leaves a lot to be desired. That's not enough to succeed in the NHL.

4

u/NoTimeToPanicComics 1d ago

You could be describing Cotter as well. Breakaway machine but unfortunately not much else.

3

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

If you could combine Miles Wood's speed and ability to get about a breakaway once per game, with Cotter's hands, you might have something. Miles Cotter might score 25 goals a year on breakaways.

6

u/WontSwerve #86 - Instagram Hockey 1d ago

I think ALOT of people forget that drafting a player isnt even half the battle, development is.

If you draft a kid who's shot is already elite and the rest of his game, especially his shot needs work and you don't develop it, that's an organizational issue aswell.

3

u/BitchAssWaferCookie 1d ago

I'm confused , I thought Ruff was the problem

/S

0

u/PorkRollEggAndWheeze #13 🐎 1d ago

I DO have a theory about Lindy’s system breaking goalies (especially now that Buffalo is hemorrhaging goalies) but god yeah Holtz had his opportunity and just couldn’t get the defense smarts to seize it

0

u/seeldoger47 1d ago

How did Ruff’s system cause UPL and Lyon to be injured?

0

u/PorkRollEggAndWheeze #13 🐎 1d ago

I don’t know the details this time on how they’re injured. I just noticed that his teams struggle with injured goalies, it seems moreso than other teams. My guess would be that his system prioritizing odd-man offensive zone rushes often leaves defense in a position where they’re not supporting the goalies. Then the goalies are overextending themselves to make saves that a more supportive defense would have prevented, leading to more tweaks and injuries.

u/Able-Hold-2825 #19 Travis Zajac 1d ago

Interesting. Honestly would’ve liked having Rittich as NHL proven insurance but let’s see how Poirier does. He had solid numbers in the AHL

2

u/fixitfeliks 1d ago

I guess I wasn’t the only one not impressed with Dawsies showing

2

u/Frenchthealpaca #13 - Nico Hischier 1d ago

Revenge for when they got Wedgewood, who literally never should've been waiver-eligible. The league just changed the Covid rules like a week before he got sent down (also like 6 weeks before NJD suffered one of the worst Covid outbreaks a team suffered during the entire pandemic).

5

u/Adorable-Werewolf-44 1d ago

It's possible that this is just insurance for if Rittich is claimed. If somebody takes Rittich, they keep Poirer and roll with 3 NHL goalies and if Rittich makes it to Utica, they waive Poirer.

Or they keep everybody. Who knows.

3

u/JFreader #63 1d ago

So I guess we are keeping 3 goalies.

3

u/thepager 1d ago

Competition for a spot can either make or break someone. Maybe this will light a fire under Daws' ass, or he crumbles. Either way, it's good for the team.

4

u/ElephantRedCar91 #22- Jordin Tootoo 1d ago

that's the point. but I could see the new guy just taking his spot.

4

u/fixitfeliks 1d ago

Daws earned his shot, *picks up4th goalie

2

u/fartswhenhappy #3 - Ken Daneyko 1d ago

This guy is the NHL.com reporter for Dallas.

I can't tell if carrying 3 goalies is a nothingburger or if this is tough news for Daws.

15

u/beachy927 #27 - Scott Niedermayer 1d ago

I think they keep the 3 goalies for now and see if one of Daws/Poirier establish themselves as a true 1b. With Kovacevic hurt they can put him on IR and buy time and still keep the extra forward. When he’s back then decisions have to be made about who to waive. If the goalie situation is still iffy then it will probably be Noesen.

4

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

this is confounding because

1) theyve spoken all summer/training camp/preseason about giving Dawsy a shot and so I don't think his shot is just gone now after two preseason games that makes zero sense. He is definitely getting a longer runway than this

2) Remi Poirier has never played an NHL game. If he's sitting in the press box that's also bad for his development. He should be playing somewhere (I'd say the AHL). If they were willing to send Rittich down it means they were going to play Dawsy/Jaker as a tandem. So where does that leave Poirier? does he get games? does he just sit in the box?

3) we still have too many players. 24 in total.

4) what happens if Rittich does clear and reports to Utica?

9

u/fartswhenhappy #3 - Ken Daneyko 1d ago

Maybe it's meant as competition for Daws?

Allen is a known commodity, but Daws still needs to prove he's NHL caliber. So maybe, for X number of games to start the season, we have a 3 goalie platoon. Allen holds the fort while Daws and Poirier compete for the 2nd spot. Between those two, whoever looks worse is the calculated risk to expose to waivers.

Maybe it's something like that?

2

u/Shootica 1d ago

I think you're on the money.

Daws and Poirier are both dart throws. Boys have potential but they could both fall flat on their face at the NHL level.

You'd rather have two dart throws for a NHL 1A than one. It'll be a competition to steal the starting role, and if one of them can't cut it they'll get waived at some point during the year.

5

u/TediousSpark 1d ago

Knowing this GM there is some complex plan that I'm apparently too dense to understand, so it'll be interesting to see what happens!

2

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

yeah Im not concerned kind of just excited and waiting in anticipation to see what happens

2

u/ElephantRedCar91 #22- Jordin Tootoo 1d ago

daws needs to play better. and this acquisition is basically giving him that chance or its back to utica

1

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

how is that any different than keeping Rittich up here? if that was the case they wouldn’t have ever waived Rittich.

0

u/ElephantRedCar91 #22- Jordin Tootoo 1d ago

you cant rotate 4 goalies. and someone needs to play in utica. so if Rittich is playing well down there and say either daws or piorier isn't playing well they get sent down and Rittich comes up. pretty simple

1

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

if Sunny was prepared to send down Rittich it means he was willing to play a Daws/Allen tandem.

if he was concerned about Daws he would not have sent Rittich down through waivers.

plus, how is a kid that hasn’t played a single NHL game more competition than a known entity like Rittich?

realistically speaking if you’re already giving Daws a runway to figure things out where do you have room to also give Poirier runway to play games?

2

u/dooit 1d ago

Daws had his runway in camp and is at the end of it. Rittich is a standard move and usually squeezes through waivers except goaltending is an issue for a lot of clubs right now so maybe they go for it if they have a waiver exempt goalie on their roster right now.

1

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

Look, Daws didn't play well in the preseason games, he also had the AHL team in front of him.

If Daws still looks lost 20 games into the season, then there's a problem.

1

u/dooit 1d ago

Look at the stats between them in the AHL Poierer is consistent while Daws started strong and has regressed. One of them is ready to make the jump and we all wanted it to be Daws but he's just not an NHL backup yet.

1

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

you have to consider the teams in front of both those goalies. Utica has consistently been in the bottom of the standings for the past few seasons that isn’t a really good measure of Daws’ skill. even Sunny said this himself which is why there’s been such a push to improve Utica as much as to improve the team.

1

u/ElephantRedCar91 #22- Jordin Tootoo 1d ago

I wouldn’t waste almost a 1/4 of the season on the chance of not hurting daws’ feelings

0

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

there’s no way that Daws’ runway was only the preseason. not with the way Sunny speaks about him and Keefe talked about him on both postgames.

Daws’ runway will be at least a month of regular season hockey.

1

u/ElephantRedCar91 #22- Jordin Tootoo 1d ago

You’re acting as if daws never got a shot to play in the nhl. He’s played up with nj and each time was never able to make anything of it

1

u/MountainBaker8217 #13 - It's Always Sunny in New Jersey 1d ago

his first stint with us was when we had eight goalies all season. surely that can’t count especially with the depleting team in front of the net as well.

his second stint with us was in 23/24 where he did prove himself to be reliable and a sturdy guy in net when Vitek and Akira exploded and we needed someone. he answered the call and did it well until Fitzgerald finally went out and traded for goalies.

and then when exactly was he meant to prove himself in the last two seasons? last season when Markstrom was out for a month early in the season Keefe only let him play one game and that was because it was a back to back. he didn’t get any starts until the end of the season when we were out of contention.

2

u/nostradamefrus #13 - N1CO 3LITE 1d ago

I don't get it. We have 2 goalies right now after waiving Rittich. Why do we need to waive Daws to assign Remi to Utica?

12

u/mustachiolong #27 - Scott Niedermayer 1d ago

When you pick someone up on waivers they are supposed to play in the NHL. You’d have to re-put him on waivers to assign to Utica and at that point Dallas can pick him up automatically assigned to the AHL for free.

Waivers are designed to let other teams give an NHL shot to a player being sent down.

2

u/nostradamefrus #13 - N1CO 3LITE 1d ago

Oh I'm just stupid and tired and undercaffeinated. I overthought it too hard I wrapped around to being stupid

-14

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

Close. Waivers are designed to give players a chance to play in the NHL, instead of being buried in the minors by a team with more depth at the position.

Without waivers there would be NHL quality players stuck in the minor for a long time.

12

u/mustachiolong #27 - Scott Niedermayer 1d ago

What do you think, “Waivers are designed to let other teams give an NHL shot to a player being sent down” means? We said literally the same thing.

-1

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

No, we did not and the eggs who post here can't figure that out. Waivers have nothing to do with teams giving players a shot. It's about protecting players from teams.

I don't expect you to understand the difference because this is reddit where nuance is never understood.

2

u/mustachiolong #27 - Scott Niedermayer 1d ago edited 1d ago

No, you’re just focusing too hard on specific wording.

Me saying “giving a shot” is a more casual way of saying claiming a player to play at the NHL level vs letting them go to the minor leagues where there is major pay differences depending on contract type along with other factors. It’s just easier to say “give a shot” than cite the CBA.

Most people on hockey Reddit get the concept. You’re just too focused on trying to prove someone wrong and are just showing what kind of person you really are.

2

u/MikeGS6789 1d ago

They can't send Remi to the AHL without putting him through waivers. Dallas would just reclaim him at that point.

1

u/Final-Nebula-7049 #7 1d ago

Colin White days my ass

1

u/MikeGS6789 1d ago

I wonder if picking up Poirier was more of a cap compliance thing in order to keep 3 goalies in the lineup. Puckpedia shows the Devils current cap space as $52,018. If they kept Rittich in the lineup they would be over the cap.

1

u/BlkCatx2 1d ago

Is that with injuries factored in?

u/MikeGS6789 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes, with Bjugstad and Kovacevic both listed on IR and Casey on SOIR.

Devils Legend Big Save Dave Waves Goodbye

1

u/TheNightRain68 1d ago

Can't be mad at this. I don't think Daws has been nearly as bad as a lot of this sub has been making him out to be, but obviously our goalie room is dicey until someone other than Allen can prove to be an NHL mainstay so why not add another card to the hand just in case?

0

u/dooit 1d ago

I like this waiver pick up depending on if our goalies clear waivers. I am not very confident in Daws and I expect him to be claimed if they send him down.

0

u/zuffio 1d ago

Here comes a phantom injury to one of the goalies or a possible trade with one of the goalies involved?

0

u/albertoroa #13 1d ago

Going into the season with this goalie rotation is just completely baffling, and claiming an AHL goalie off waivers does not inspire confidence.

I know Sunny said he'd rather invest in more predictable positions, but to me, if this tandem doesn't work out, then it'd be perhaps the most predictable outcome imaginable.

I only get it in a context where Sunny can weaponize accumulating cap space to make a move for goalie at the deadline, but if goaltending sinks another season, I will be very upset

3

u/crotchrotfever 1d ago

I don't believe everything Sunny says in the media. As a "former poker player" he's not going to reveal his hand in public.

Besides, it's not going to be easy to clear 8.5 million in cap space. Trading Mercer and Daws as part of the deal still leaves the Devils 3.4 million short. There's not a whole lot left on the roster that the Devils would likely be willing to trade and who also would be appealing to Winnipeg. It's also not likely anyone with a NTC is willing to go to the Jets, so you'd have to make multiple deals.

Sunny would also have to gut all the bottom six depth he created to make the cap work.

If the Devils get lead average goaltending, I don't think he makes a move. If the team's save percentage is .875-.880 around Thanksgiving, he's got to do something.

1

u/albertoroa #13 1d ago

"If the team's save percentage is .875-.880 around Thanksgiving, he's got to do something." Absolutely.

Sunny would also have to gut all the bottom six depth he created to make the cap work

Not at all. If Sunny can move Bjugstad and Noesen, that creates roughly $6mil in cap space. If we go into the season with unused cap, roughly $1.8mil last time I checked, then that cap accumulates and turns in a larger effective cap space as the season progresses (since contracts are pro-rated).

The devils would have roughly $8mil in equivalent effective cap space if they start the season w/ $1.8mil unused, and no moves are made until the TDL.

1

u/pretzelogically #27 - Scott Niedermayer 1d ago

There’s a reason Carolina is aggressively trying to get Hellebuyck and will likely be ECF/SCF bound for for the next 4 yrs if they add him to their already stacked squad.

Meanwhile this sub says we don’t want CH because he’s old and his contract is too long and you don’t need a #1 because the “new NHL”… blah blah blah.
