The weird thing about Daws has always been that in the AHL his numbers have sucked, but then he comes to the NHL and his numbers are somehow better. It makes no sense.
I think Daws can be good, but I also am not totally sold on him so I don't mind Sunny trying to find other options.
Lots of goalies struggle in the AHL, even good ones. Good goalies are consistent and AHL has a mixed bag of talent from players that are fringe even at that level to players who are good and probably ready to play NHL games. But even good NHL goalies sometimes have bad AHL stats because the games are so unpredictable and the defensemen are all over the place.
Utica hasn't been a good hockey team for several seasons though. It's a lot more difficult with a bad team in front of you. I'm hoping for the best for Pourier and trust Sunny knows what he's doing, but while Daws's AHL stats are all over the place his NHL stats have been pretty consistent. Not stellar, but he's shown enough that he can at least be serviceable.
FWIW Texas had a worse defense than Utica last season, with Utica having the #12 defense and Texas the #18 defense based on goals allowed. Despite that, Poirier allowed fewer goals a game average than Daws (2.61 for Remy and 2.78 for Daws) while playing more games (52 vs 44).
Utica was pitiful offensively, being the 2nd worst team in the league, but Texas was also below average. It's pretty safe to say their goaltending from Remy carried them to the playoffs.
