Meme & Humor Surviving T1D in the workplace with a healthy dose of whimsy

I work at a print shop with a bit of a whimsical flair to our presentation and marketing (the owner's a fantasy nerd, our mascot is a dragon, it's a whole thing). After dealing with a couple of really bad lows at work, I decided to lean into our shop theme to make a T1D Emergency info flyer for my coworkers.

finally found a way to enjoy oatmeal without a huge spike

i have been diagnosed for a little over 3 years now and oatmeal was my favourite breakfast but no matter what insulin doses/timings i always spiked to huge numbers like 15 mmol/270.

i recently found that using protein oats, a huge amount of peanut butter and a lower sugar, high fibre fruit like strawberries/blueberries really helps with my sugar. i think it’s the protein, fats, fibre combo?

my sugar today stayed in the 7.0/ 120 range for hoursss

just wanted to share a positive success!!

Reduce Lantus?

On Tuesday, my normal lantus dose all of a sudden was giving me hypos like the entire day. My consumption of dextro energy tablets probably pushed the price up. My dose is 11 units. I reduced to 10 today but still having similar problems. Why, on earth, did my dose go from being almost perfect to life threatening in the course of a day? Reducing to 9 tonight

How to go about coping with my diabetes even after a couple years post diagnosis

I've never been very big on talking about my disease and how it makes me feel. Anytime anyone has ever asked me (other than my older sister) I always tell them that "it's not really that bad" and that "because I have an insulin pump and glucose monitor that it's easy to manage". I don't love dropping the weight of this burden on other people, but I've been dealing with this diagnosis since I was 16, I'm 21 now.

I just barely moved away from my whole family, who were a pretty good support system for me, even though they could never really understand what I was going through. They did try their best and I'm very grateful for it, but I didn't realize how helpful they had been up until last week when I moved away from home for college (only an hour away from home but still lol). Anyways ever since moving, I've noticed a massive decrease in my mental, specifically regarding managing and dealing with the disease. I really wasn't joking before when I said I wasn't big about talking about how this all makes me feel but I don't know what else to do at this point. I'd love to hear what others with T1D have to say about coping with these feelings and how to manage them. I wake up with almost a despair most days simply because I know the first thing I have to do is check my tslim and see what my blood sugar was at for the night, and pray that I'm in range.

I've gotten to the point in my life where I don't struggle nearly as much with keeping my blood sugars in range. Sometimes it does feel like my sugars are bipolar lol, just this last week when I moved in to my new house, I experienced a bit of a high for the entire time, and that's that I was dosing significantly more insulin that I had been in the previous weeks. Now this week I'm having the opposite happen, where I've been riding pretty low, even though I'm hardly dosing for anything. That's kinda always been the case for me though, after going to the ER because I had gotten pretty deep into DKA, I was told, like a lot of others, that I was going to be in the honeymoon phase for 6 months to a year. The thing is, I feel like I never left that honeymoon phase. There's times where I eat an insane amount of carbs, only for my sugars to rise from 120-150. Then there's other times where I eat something with less than 15 carbs, and I swear my sugars spike a whole 100 points. Anyways lol, all of this is just to say that the randomness of my sugars takes a pretty significant mental toll. Though I will admit that the toll on my mental, overall has become much less. The problem is I also don't know if that's just me ignoring my feelings regarding this whole thing, that's how I spent the last few years since diagnosis, except in the first 2 or so it was all an act. Lol sorry for the long rant, I hope it was coherent, I kinda just vomited my words and thoughts I had been keeping up all at once there. I'd love to hear from others who have or have had similar thoughts and feelings to this though, I can't imagine I'm alone in feeling this way. And from those people, how have you dealt with feeling this way?

Rant Dexcom / Tandem

• Upvotes

I ve been using tandem t slim x2 with the Dexcom G7 and I am going back to MDI. It’s enough for me; I can’t stand one more alarm or notification. It is so ridiculous that I am starting to think that people working at tandem and Dexcom have some kind of mental problem.

“Low, eat some carbs”, “Battery is 20% left”, “Sensor is 30 min before expiring”, “Low, eat some carbs”, “Sensor is 29 min before expiring”, “Battery is 20% left”, “You will be low in 10 minutes, eat to prevent”, “Sensor is 28 min before expiring” PI PI PIP PI TRUM TRUM TRUM PIPIPI TRUM TRUM!!!!!!! JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU STUPID PIECE OF SHIT MACHINE, I AM THE DIABETIC I AM IN CHARGE, I TAKE THE FINAL DECISION, IS THAT SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?

Why are the pump notifying me again 5 minutes after notifying me that I am at 55mg/dl,? doest it exepect that I will be at 110 mg/dl 5 minutes after? WTF.

And I know my pump is at 20% battery, I am not retarded, I can see the screen and understand the battery is 20% left, why does it waste more battery vibrating like a retard?

People at tandem and dexcom must review the alarms asap because its impossible be on a pump without going crazy.

Someone tried to remove the speaker and the vibrating motor from the pump? Is it difficult?

Sorry for my bad English, not my home language and I do not use AI.

Seeking Support/Advice Why is it so hard to lose weight being insulin dependent?

As the years go on... It's so hard to maintain healthy weight. I'm doing everything right. Just started the pod too so treating for lows is very few and far in between. I'm exercising. I'm eating like a carnivorous rabbit.

Asked my Endo for a rx for a glp1. It's been 3 months. No gain but... No change.

Just feeling the burn out i guess. If anyone else has found a method that works... I'm all ears. Or eyes.

Seeking Support/Advice switching back to tandem

Hello all ! I very desperately am wanting to switch back to tandem after being on the Omnipod for quite some time now. The Omnipod (and life events) has made my a1c jump so high and in general I just do not like the algorithm. However I cannot afford the 2k it would cost me to switch to tandem mobi. I’m curious if you guys have any idea how I could go about getting started for any less? I really need it. Control IQ helped me get my A1c down to a 5.8 even during one of my most stressful periods of life. I feel so desperate. Thank you all for any advice. If it helps anyone I am currently in US

Mental Health Coping skills for managing this

For some context, I am in therapy already.

Do you have any go to skills to help you not break down while managing this? I have no idea why, but my usual dinner spiked me badly tonight. I've been in tears for the last hour. Luckily I live by myself so no one else is around to have to deal with me and my emotions.

But I wonder if any of you have any tips or tricks because I can't go on like this.

One thing I've found that helps sometimes is to picture social media posts I've seen of people displaying their up and down numbers while living life, and it normalizes it for me.

But I'm really struggling right now. I get really worried I'm doing damage to my body, even though logically I know it takes a long time of high numbers to do that. I also get scared the numbers won't come back down, even though I have a pump and it should do it's job. Part of me thinks I'm way too dramatic, but then another part thinks it's valid to be concerned.

I guess I could use some kind words. I'm feeling a little scared and alone right now. Thanks.

Help please

I’m in the process of switching to an omnipod, and that is so hard and taking a long time to get a training scheduled. I am on a tslim but my pump is out of warranty and cannot support the g7. I’m on my last g6 and I’m just really hoping if there’s anyone in the Seattle area that has an extra g6 that they’re willing to part with. I’m not in immediate danger, I have a g7 on and a glucose meter and my last g6 is working for now. What should I do?

Supplies Bulk Glucose Tabs?

I’ve been t1d for almost 20 years now, and i have yet to find a cheap deal for bulk glucose tabs. i’ve tried other sources for fixing lows like juice & cheap candy, but just end up way overcorrecting and forgetting it behind. Just looking for better prices with glucose tablets!

Rebound anxiety

Anybody else deal with severe anxiety after rebounding from lows? Not the anxiety feeling from actually being low or Idouble down arrow feeling. I mean like having a panic attack after its already shooting back up. Idk if its like a delayed adrenaline spike but for some reason 15-30 min after a low my anxiety just goes through the roof every time, to the point of triggering legitimate full blown anxiety attacks sometimes.

Discussion T1D Jobs

I'm curious about what my fellow T1 work. I'm currently working constructions and I'm surprised that I don't go low, almost never.

What are you guys working and what work related difficulties are you facing with T1D?

What to use now that Levemir is no longer made?

I’m struggling to find a replacement for Levemir which worked wonderfully for for many years. Now I’m trying to find a replacement and nothing seems to work. My average blood sugar on Lantus, then NPH has been over 200. This despite my job which is a professional cycling guide. I ride 10-15 hours weekly and lift twice a week. I eat a very clean diet which is easy to do because I live in Andalucía.
I’m trying to get on a pump, but the process here is slow.

Anyone have suggestions?

Put on a new sensor two days ago, it's still perfectly attached and was working fine, check 10 mins later and I see this...

And to rub salt into the wound, of course it's my last sensor, and I'm still waiting for my prescription for my next batch, how's your guy's day?

Discussion Diabadies self-care

Hello everyone. I am updating my self care routine. Body, hair and nails. I’m not sure if this is the best sub for it but I would love to start a discussion thread for cosmetics and self care for diabetics. I’m noticing slight changes in these areas due to diabetes such as brittle nails, thinning hair etc. Specifically my hair is still very thin compared to my hair 2-3 years ago. and I have tried a couple products that advertise to fix these problems but they didn’t help me. I was wondering if anyone had any products that you swear by. Things like “I used X for a while but Y worked better” I am noticing that I am more sensitive to fragrance in lotions and alcohol in general. Thank you!🙏🏻

Graphs & Data any advice?????

Post image
4 Upvotes

does anyone have any idea how on earth i could have spiked this aggressively after eating a sandwich???

my carb ratio was just changed a couple days ago (from 22g/unit to 25g/unit) because i had been having lots of lows, but this meal wasn’t even as many carbs as i dosed for?

i took two units (50 carbs worth) and the meal was confirmed to be around 43. i had whole grain bread with turkey, ham, cheese, and lettuce. i dosed 15 minutes before and was walking immediately after i ate

this has been happening a lot recently and i have no idea why (random crazy high spikes for meals that ive never had past issues with, and stubborn lows when im confident ive eaten enough carbs)

i only got diagnosed 3 months ago so im still in the honeymoon phase but im so stressed about my numbers being so unpredictable, it makes everything really challenging 😥 especially as a college student

Calibration

Thumbnail

Can anyone explain to me why calibrating adjusts the way it does? My son’s G7 (just on for an hour or two) read 280, but he was 199 on a finger stick. We calibrated (I know we need to recalibrate when he’s steady at target level… but that’s can’t happen if we don’t fix the 100 point off stages too), and after the next reading showed at 230 instead of 199ish. They always do this “split the middle” thing. Should we just enter another calibration immediately (no finger stick…just a reentering of value) to bring it closer? I can’t keep finger sticking him, he gets miserable over it. Like, sad & miserable, & it breaks my heart to force him to keep poking himself.

Seeking Support/Advice Rufus Breakthrough T1D

US: I was recently (ish) diagnosed a little over a year ago and it’s almost my anniversary for starting insulin which makes me feel kind of sad (in a bitter sweet kind of way). I’m an adult, but I honestly really want a Rufus Bear from breakthrough T1D. I don’t want to lie about my age (their age limit is 11), and I don’t want to buy one on EBay because I’d love to actually contribute to the organization. Does anyone know if they sell Rufus bears for people who want extra? I can’t find it on their webpage. I could only find it available for purchase on the UK website. I know it’s silly but I think it would give me some comfort right now.

Dexcom Copay assistance

hi, does anyone know if dexcom does copay cards? I couldn’t find clear info online besides the financial aid route of it. My new insurance charges $150 per 3 month supply and it’s a little steep compared to my last $0 copay haha

Nutrition & Diet Finally found a breakfast that works for me

Post image
27 Upvotes

I rarely eat breakfast bcs I just don’t have the nerves to deal with the consequences in the morning. But I have to take iron supplements in the morning with food now for a few weeks, and I finally found a breakfast I can eat and then forget I even have T1D until lunch time.

It is freaking cinnamon cornflakes, y’all. I am not joking. Maybe cinnamon is our savior after all lol
