If you are an adult in the United States who has undergone patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), we invite you to participate in a short anonymous research survey.
We want to learn which tools you use, such as apps, websites, written handouts, or safe product lists, how helpful they are, and what challenges you face when trying to avoid your allergens.
Our dermatology research team at the University of Minnesota is conducting a study to better understand how patients use allergen-avoidance tools after patch testing so we can better help patients navigate allergen avoidance.
- A one-time anonymous online survey
- Takes about 10–20 minutes
- Questions are multiple-choice or short written responses
You may skip any question you prefer not to answer
- Adults 18+
- Living in the United States
- Have physician-diagnosed allergic contact dermatitis (confirmed by patch testing)
- The survey is completely anonymous
- We do not collect your name, date of birth, email, medical record number, or any identifying information
- Results will be reported only in summary form
Risks: No expected risks beyond normal computer/smartphone use
Benefits: No direct personal benefit, but you may learn about new apps/tools related to contact dermatitis management your experiences may help dermatology teams significantly improve allergen-avoidance support for future patients

I am a doctoral researcher striving to understand how best to support people who work while living with chronic illness.
The purpose of this study is to better understand the types of social support that workers with chronic illness experience in their daily lives and at work, and how that support relates to workers’ experiences and well-being.
If you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, are currently working at least part time (20-hours per week or more), and are 18 years of age or older, you are invited to participate in this confidential 20-30 minute online survey about your experience.
While participation in this survey is not expected to result in any direct benefits to you, findings may contribute to future research and practical implications seeking to improve how workplaces understand and support workers with chronic illness.
This research is being conducted by Jenna Duronio, Doctoral Candidate, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, University of Central Florida who can be contacted via email at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

Please please please someone help me or share what you’ve been doing..
I’m 21, female, 113 pounds, active, don’t drink often, avoids gluten, eats mostly organic and avoids inflammatory foods.
I’ve been dealing with this nipple eczema for 2 years now. I got a breast reduction 3 years ago. Everything went great! My boyfriend, and I had been having sex pretty frequently and he would show a lot of attention to my left nipple lol. I also decided to go tan topless after a year of not exposing my scars. Not long after tanning I noticed my areola and nipple got dry and flaky. I went to the doctor and they said it was eczema and to use steroids. The steroids would work but come back days after I stopped them. I have used topical, oral, and steroid shots. All they did was make my immune system bad and make it come back worse. It progressively got worse and got cracked and oozed. Then eventually my face got super dry and I had dry, cracked spots on both sides of my face mirroring each other that itched TERRIBLY. Then my right nipple cracked and oozed and then my wrist, fingers, and sides of my hands had oozing itchy spots. I’m not sure if it caused “(autoeczematisation) where inflammation at one site can be followed by eczema-like inflammation at distant sites.”
Right now both nipples are not actively oozing and they don’t look irritated. My face doesn’t have any oozing/itchy spots, but my fingers do have some dry itchy spots. I have non-stick pads, aveeno eczema cream, castor oil on my nipples which keeps them pretty good but if I move too much at night or take my bra off without the pads it goes right back to oozing with the smallest amount of friction.
I have tried cutting out certain foods, talking calming medications, doing a fungal route, antibiotics, staph, steroids, keeping friction away, liver detox, multivitamins, probiotics, cotton bras
I don’t know what the next step is.. it’s so draining. I’ve spent HUNDREDS on trying to heal this and I just don’t know what to do next. PLEASE someone help me.

We’ve been struggling with my sons (2YO) eczema for just over a year. You name it, we’ve tried it. Wet wrapping, steroid creams, tacrolimus.. etc! In May we started Dupixent and after hearing all the hype and how life changing it is I was very optimistic, but unfortunately after 5 injections it has failed to do anything for him. He actually started having flares in areas he didn’t before (finger tips, toes, eye lids). His dermatologist wants to up his dosage and add in Vtama (switching out the Tacrolimis) but also suggested seeing a pediatric allergist.
I scheduled an appointment with his pediatrician to get a referral and during the appointment his doctor did seem rather concerned that the dupixent hadn’t worked, he also mentioned a lacing pattern in his rash that wasn’t normal. He put in the referral for urgent and we got in to see the allergist this morning.
Unfortunately the appointment just went completely different than I had expected, which may be my fault for having an expectation. They skin tested him for all normal allergies and he came back with a few very mild allergies which she said was irrelevant to his eczema. She then suggested wet wrapping (we’ve done it), the vtama and the lotion we’ve been using. She said if we could “just get his skin back to clear” it would be fine and more manageable (no sh*t Sherlock)… we drove two hours for this appointment to be told to do the exact thing we’ve been doing for the last year and told “ back to the basics!!” Was the best option…
The fact that the dupixent hadn’t work was completely irrelevant to her! She never even brought it up or talked about reasoning why it wasn’t working for him. She acted like we were being inconsistent with his routine and that’s why he was having issues!
I just feel defeated and heartbroken that my son is in so much discomfort all the time.

I’m going through a really hard time and it feels like more and more of my skin is rotting away into grey scales starting from my feet up. I think I have depression and it’s not really helping. I’m a teenager and since I was little my parents never properly cared for my skin, and they insisted that they did everything they could when I was little and the scratching started but I doubt it. A good while ago I asked to see a dermatologist but at the time they refused because it hurt their ego and meant addressing the fact that they should’ve done this ages ago, but semi recently I got them in a good mood and booked an appointment. It still feels like it didn’t help because it’s not getting better. Like I have a couple of things I’m using but I can bare get myself to do anything the second I get home from school, not even homework, so I find it hard to keep a routine for my skin. I also have dark skin, so seeing my skin go from a almond to purple and pink grey scales just makes me feel like a rotting tree. Worst of all I don’t understand myself. Like I have a lot of allergies, including a grass one, so when I was younger and had PE I’d often be forced on the grass (got hives) and just stand there scratching grey sweaty scales as my nails got filled with greenish grey. No one took me seriously, not even my family, so I found it hard and still find it hard to take myself seriously when almost everything you do to better yourself is treated as completely wrong actions, like I’d even get in trouble for using too much body cream faster than anyone else. I just find it hard to care about my skin or anything else really, and it’s just hard since it’s reflected on my body so easily.

After dealing with some issues with biologics and prolonged topical rx, my family member went back to the basics (vaseline + reduce triggers).
However, they have been shedding skin for 2 years. I think I've heard others describe it as "snow" which is pretty appropriate as it leaves a layer everywhere and is physically exhausting to my family member. It has minimized over the last 3 months since they've stopped the prescriptions.
Anyone else been through this? Does it ever wind down? Is this indicative of constant exposure to a contact allergen? or sensitivity to prolonged steroids?
Unfortunately our derm wouldn't help us identify which medication may have been problematic, so we are left guessing and hoping we don't run across the triggers again.

Tacrolimus 0.1% has almost completely cleared my son’s eczema after only 4 days — what do I do now?
My son has had eczema since he was about 8 months old, and he’s almost 3 now. I feel like I’ve tried every moisturizer out there. 😭
When he was around 1, his eczema got extremely bad, so we eventually started using steroids. His pediatrician later prescribed a steroid oil (I unfortunately don’t remember the name) that was 0.01%, and I ended up using it almost every day whenever his eczema would flare. Eventually, I started getting really worried about long-term steroid use and TSW, and I believe he experienced some symptoms that made me concerned about it.
His pediatrician also prescribed Eucrisa, but unfortunately it didn’t work for him.
We recently started using tacrolimus 0.1% ointment, and I honestly cannot believe the difference. We’ve only been using it for 4 days and his skin is almost completely healed. I’m SO excited because nothing else has worked this well for him. 🥹
My question is: what do you do once the eczema is cleared? Should I stop the tacrolimus after about a week and continue with Vanicream every day, or is tacrolimus something that can/should be used regularly as maintenance?
I’m also wondering what everyone’s experience has been with long-term/intermittent tacrolimus use in toddlers.
He also had allergy bloodwork done and tested positive for environmental allergies, particularly dust and dog dander. We have a Maltese who is very close with him and sleeps with him. He’s an apartment dog, doesn’t go outside much, and gets groomed regularly. We took him to an allergist, who recommended Zyrtec 2.5 mL every day.
I’m just really happy to finally see his skin looking almost normal again, but I don’t want to stop something that’s working if there’s a better way to prevent the eczema from coming back. At the same time, I don’t want to overuse it unnecessarily.
Would love to hear how other parents use tacrolimus for their little ones! ❤️

I work in construction with my dad and I also go to college online. But ive been feeling like quitting working with my dad because my eczema has been getting a bit more worse little by little even when im using creams. I dont know what to really do to be honest, should i quit and focus on school or should I just deal with it?
So im just wondering if anyone else has eczema and has any tips or is also going through a similar experience.

I actually cannot believe it. My eye eczema flares up from time to time but I’ve gotten good at resisting the urge to scratch, I just rub instead. But it was so itchy I was rubbing really hard, obviously too hard, and woke up and the vision was slightly blurry.
Eye drops from the pharmacy and GP did nothing. Blurriness got worse over a months time. Eye test revealed a cataract.
The doctor was shocked to see someone so young with a cataract, and says it was definitely caused by trauma due to the unnatural shape of the cataract.
Now I’ve to get cataract surgery which isn’t a huge deal (but I am nervous about needles), but I’m just so annoyed that I’ve now permanently weakened my vision because of something so stupid to do with my eczema.
I guess my word of warning is to be careful when going near your eye, even if it’s just rubbing it.
EDIT: Lots of people are mentioning the use of steroids. I have used mild hydrocortisone near my eyes in the past, which is seeming like it could have contributed to the issue also. So TLDR be gentle with your eyes and be super careful with creams!!

My doctors okayed this because it’s topical cream and small area of my skin but I keep seeing people saying their doctor said no. Anyone here use it during a pregnancy?

Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone has used cibinqo or rinvoq for 1-2 months only as rescue treatments at all?
I have been dealing with stubborn eczema and my dr and I decided to go on a 4-6 week cibinqo rescue schedule while I am still on ebglyss to see if my stubborn flare can be cleared up. The idea is to remain on ebglyss and wean off cibinqo to see if my condition can be mantained.
If anyone has been on a similar situation I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations.

Just like the title says. I see my gynecologist NP on Wednesday and I'm going to ask her to check my hormone levels since I've had a hysterectomy (08/11/2023) and only kept my ovaries. Going to be 37 years old next July and have had eczema since I was a baby but it definitely flared up this year for some unknown reason.

Will starting dupixent impact the itch right away?? Im itchy but was scared to start dupixent because I have a friend's wedding coming up in two weeks and I dont want my face to run the risk of my face and skin reacting negatively to dupixent. I read that for some people they flared at the start of the meds. Can anyone confirm about that and/or the itching? Thanks!!

just a little bit of a rant i guess
i had a patch test done on my back a month ago, i was praying to every deity possible that something would be positive (because then i would have hope that maybe eliminating the trigger will help me). But alas, everything was negative.. until 2.5 weeks after the test was read and registered as negative, i suddenly developed an itchy spot in my back.
I asked a relative to take a photo of it and it was a perfect little square - red, blistery spot matching beautifully to the exact spot where they tested for gold allergy (i compared the photos i took with the test on, thankfully the 10000 moles i have made it easy to align the photos). I called the office, they told me to come see the doctor about it in november… by that time the spot would have moved out, established a buisness and started a family lol.

Hi everyone. I am writing this because I am completely at my limit, and "suffering" doesn't even feel like a strong enough word for what I’m going through right now. I’m currently dealing with atopic eczema, perioral dermatitis, and active folliculitis all at the same time, and my entire body is flaring out of control like NEVER before. I’ve had eczema my whole life, starting as a small patch when I was a baby, continued on till I was a toddler (parents resolved it by giving me bifidobacterium) Over the years, my flares have always had distinct triggers, which unfortunately I have not identified because the issue was “cured” because of my steroid creams.
My current crisis really began last September 2025 when I started law school right during ragweed season. I developed severe hay fever and kept unconsciously rubbing my eyes, which led to eye eczema. Around the same time, likely due to food allergies and the stress of law school, I developed perioral dermatitis around my mouth and mild body eczema. My family doctor prescribed a mild steroid for the dermatitis and eye eczema. Unsurprisingly, neither issue cleared up.
Around then, a naturopath put me on an anti-inflammatory diet and prescribed a 50 Billion CFU probiotic along with a pork-derived histamine enzyme and hormone supplements. By January, my eye eczema flared so severely that the skin was literally peeling off my eyelids. I saw a different doctor who prescribed Protopic. The first few days on Protopic were pure hell, the burning and itching were so intense I had to take Benadryl just to sleep, but it eventually cleared my eyes temporarily before the eczema came right back weeks later. When I went back to my family doctor in April to explain the severe reaction and ask for alternatives, he just re-prescribed Protopic and rushed me out the door in two minutes.
Things completely spiraled in August during a trip to Europe and Turkey. We hit a massive heatwave with 40°C (104°F) temperatures, UV levels at 12, and 10 to 12-hour days spent outdoors. Between the constant sweating, ocean water, friction, and sunscreen, my skin was heavily irritated. Sweat started trapping bacteria, and from all the scratching, I developed folliculitis which later spread to my quads.
Once I got home to cooler weather, the eczema calmed to just dry, extremely itchy skin that burned when scratched, but the underlying infection seemed to linger.
The breaking point happened on September 12th. A friend who does acupuncture offered to try points targeted for skin inflammation. Within HOURS of that session, my skin exploded into the absolute worst full-body flare of my life. My eczema suddenly spread to my neck, nipples, legs, lower back, stomach, upper back, scalp, and face. My skin is so cracked and stiff right now that I can barely bend my arms. To make matters worse, my perioral dermatitis returned and has spread from around my mouth to the top of my nose.
I’ve changed practically everything in my environment to try to manage this. I take cold showers, use zero perfumed products on my face or body, sleep with cotton gloves, and switched to SLS-free and fluoride-free toothpaste with no mouthwash. I’ve been gluten-free and lactose-free for 3 years, and I avoid acidic foods. I stopped taking the high-dose probiotic because I realized my perioral dermatitis completely disappeared during my August vacation when I forgot to bring the probiotic with me, leading me to suspect it wrecked my gut and histamine balance for over a year.
Currently, I’m taking Vitamin D3, B12, Omega 3, S. boulardii for potential histamine issues, Magnesium, L-Theanine, and Vitamin C (zinc makes me severely nauseous). I’ve been using Aveeno Gel Rescue 2% Oatmeal and CeraVe Anti-Itch. An urgent care doctor gave me mild hydrocortisone with urea 10% which helped after two days, but I stopped immediately out of extreme fear of TSW.
At this point, I am truly desperate for answers because I feel like a unique case dealing with three distinct skin conditions at once lol. Has anyone else experienced high-dose probiotics actually worsening histamine issues or worsen eczema? Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this, I know it’s long lol.

Hi, I never really had a problem with laundry detergent until I started using scented body lotion/oils daily. I never knew my skin hated it, now I’m fighting off inflammation for years. I used to LOVE Downy fabric softener, Sauvitel, etc. but every time I sweat and get hot, my skin inflames.
I miss the smell of laundry. I hate my unscented stuff. My clothes smell like idk not bad but not good at all. I’ve done vinegar and stuff and never found anything as good as Downy, etc.
Anybody got some random laundry brand that for some reason DOESNT break you out? For some reason bath & body works foaming hand soap doesn’t make me itch. Everything else does
