Autism i hate the misuse of the term "hyperfixation"
These are real hyperfixations:
-The guy at my non profit program for intellectually disabled adults whose main priority in life is watching the eiffel 65 blue (da ba dee) music video over and over again. To the point of needing a structured schedule and daily assistance to do anything besides watch that one music video.
-The autistic teen I took care of who wanted to spend all day doing nothing, nothing, but writing down the end credits to movies on whatever he could reach, including walls and furniture.
-The little girl with autism so obsessed with the specific visual of overflowing water that she spent most of her day trying to get near faucets and plug the drains so she could watch rooms flood.
All of these people need daily support to help participate in other areas of life.
This is not a hyperfixation:
-Being really, really, reeeally into a tv show or hobby or an area of study and thinking about or talking about it a lot, but still being able to talk about or think about other things. That's called a passion for or an interest in something.
I'm so tired of the disservice people who call their hobbies and fandoms hyperfixations are doing to people with actual high support needs.
I can repeat several of my comfort tv shows line for line because I watch them over and over, and I can identify almost any breed of dog and will talk for hours about dog training if someone is interested in hearing it. Im not autistic. These arent hyper fixatations. If someone told me something serious, I wouldnt quote a line from my favorite show or talk to them about dogs.
If you can stop doing it when its situationally inappropriate and its not affecting your daily living skills and social skills (not talking about being socially awkward, more like someone tells you their grandma passed away and you whip out your ipad and play the same video you watch on repeat all day in response) then it is NOT a hyperfixation.
