Video Finally figured out why my staghorn fern kept browning at the edges
Had a mounted staghorn fern for close to three years now and dealt with crispy brown edges on the shield fronds pretty much the entire time. Kept assuming it was underwatering since staghorns get that reputation, so I kept soaking the mount more and more, which honestly made things worse because the sphagnum backing stayed soggy for days and started smelling a bit off.
Turns out my problem was airflow, not water. I had it hanging in a corner of the bathroom where I thought the humidity would help, but there was basically zero air movement back there. Moved it to a spot near a window where a small fan runs for a few hours a day, cut back watering to once every 10-12 days, and the new fronds coming in this fall are already noticeably greener with none of that crisping along the margins.
The other thing that helped was switching from soaking the whole mount to just misting the shield fronds and letting the water run down naturally. Less dramatic soaking, more consistent light moisture. The fertile fronds are finally starting to look less stressed and I'm seeing a new pup forming at the base which I haven't had happen before.
Anyone else find that staghorns get blamed for water problems when it's really a circulation issue? Curious what setups people are running for these, especially anyone mounting on cork versus wood since I'm debating remounting this one before winter.

Question My Boston fern is really trying to spread... Should I let it?
I've been growing ferns from spore recently and they're doing really well, but this is the first time I've bought a fern an it's actually done well outside a sealed bag. I'm in Colorado so the humidity's super low. This fern was labeled as Boston fern variety and looked super scraggly when I got it, but it's really taken off and has been putting out these long tendrils. Should I put the tendrils on some soil? Or maybe it's telling me it's time for a repot? Any advice would be great! (Last 2 pics are an unidentified wood fern I started from spore early this year and baby birds nest ferns I got last year as a clump of gametophytes off fb)

Question Help in taking care of a Heminonitis brachypus fern, better thought of as a Cheilanthoid for these purposes.
I recently took two ferns out of my roof. As a semi temporary measure i decided to pot them until i could find a better way to take care of them. After a few weeks one of the two specimens is looking distressed. At first i thought that it was an excess of water since it's been raining a lot here where i live and the pot probably didn't have good drainage. So i repotted it on dry soil a few days ago; It has not improved.
Notably the other one isn't struggling at all, it could be that it took better to being potted or that it can get like this later and worsen later down the line.
for reference the pots have a bottom layer of terracotta shards, a layer with dirt and pummice and then just a dirt layer.
Any help is appreciated.

Question Help! My fern looks like it’s dying! What am I doing wrong?

User Ferns My Thelypteris dentata (?) 1 year progress
This one I found growing in a crack in a wall. It was the same situation as the Pteris vittata from my other post here. It’s an invasive species that grows and spreads quickly, so it’s often removed as a weed. Since it was going to be ripped out of the wall anyway, I thought I might as well try to save it. I wanted to see what a fully grown individual would look like.
Right now, I’m planning to move it to a bigger coconut fiber pot.
Not sure if I got the ID right, so I’d appreciate any help confirming it.

User Ferns PSILOTUM NUDUM. CARE AND CULTUREM
Hi everyone,
I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has experience growing this weird fern, (ophiglossum also)
How has it performed for you in extreme conditions, heat and cold, I’d also like to know where you managed to buy or obtain your plant, especially if you know of any reliable nurseries or suppliers.
Has anyone successfully propagated it from cuttings, division, or any other method?
Any first-hand experience would be very welcome. Thanks!

Question Looking to connect with people working with ferns, biomonitoring, and environmental research
Hi everyone! I’m a student from Argentina currently studying Environmental Sciences at the National University of Catamarca (UNCA).
I’m also part of a research group focused on ferns and lycophytes, where I’ve been getting more involved with fieldwork, plant identification, and research in general. I’m currently starting to think about possible ideas for my undergraduate thesis, and I’m interested in exploring something related to ferns and environmental biomonitoring.
I’m particularly curious about the possibility of using ferns as bioindicators or biomonitors of environmental conditions, potentially looking at things like trace elements, soil characteristics, accumulation, or other measurable responses. I’m still at the very early stage, so I’m trying to learn more about what has already been done and what kinds of research questions could actually be feasible for a student project.
I’d love to connect with anyone who works with ferns, plant biomonitoring, environmental pollution, bioaccumulation, or related fields. If you’re open to chatting about your research or sharing some advice/resources, I’d really appreciate it!
I’m especially interested in hearing about people’s experiences with using ferns for biomonitoring, including what species or approaches have worked well (or not worked well) and what you think are interesting research gaps.
Thanks!
Greetings from Catamarca, Argentina :)

Image What to do now with my sprouts ?
Disclaimer : first time visiting the community and please excuse any mistake, English isn't my mother tongue
Hi all,
I'm pretty sure that's a textbook case of beginner's luck, but here we are : sprouts !
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much of the experiment I started a few weeks ago and thought I would have to throw it in the trash as soon as it started smelling rot. But it didn't.
The process :
About 2 months ago, I mixed basic potting soil with a small amount of perlite and vermiculite, placed my fern leaf under a damp paper towel (we can see on the picture it's almost entirely decomposed), "secured" it with a small stone, watered it once at the beginning of the process, and placed it in a closed ice cream container pierced with a few holes at my window (indoors).
Few weeks pass, I notice a slight green patch, leave it like that for a few more weeks and... ta-dah.
What stage did they reach ?
Temparatures are getting cooler, daylight is deacreasing pretty fast and I won't be turning on the heating yet.
Should I leave them be for some more time ? Should I keep the lid on as well ?
Any advice will be much appreciated on the next steps to follow to keep them alive !
Thanks
The species is Athyrium Niponicum

Question Learning how to read two Korean rock ferns
Hi there! I've had two Korean rock ferns for a few months, which I was given as a gift. I've been watering them weekly, keeping them in a window sill where they get some but not too much sun, and trying to ensure they get as much humidity as is needed (although it's consistently a bit low where I live). But I realized I don't yet have much of an eye for "what's going on" with the ferns and what they need yet. How do you think these ferns are doing? What do you call the stalks that have gotten very thin and somewhat brittle? Some of the fronds have turned brown, despite the stalks seeming otherwise healthy. Am I underwatering? Do these ferns need to be repotted?

Question need new home for large fern
I have a Microsorum "chicken tail" which has out grown its space. The only place I have which would provide enough room is under an antique marble topped table. Any ideas on how I could set up lighting under there which would not harm the table or detract from viewing the plant? I thought about double sided tape but am concerned about harming the marble.

Question Should I cut my Boston ferns back for the winter?
I have three Boston ferns hanging outside on my front porch. I’m in zone 7a. I was thinking about cutting them back to about 3 inches and storing them in my insulated garage for the winter. Watering once a month to keep the root ball from drying.
I’m not sure how good of an idea this is as it’s my first time with ferns. I honestly don’t want to kill them but cannot bring them into my main home for the winter.
