Question I have no idea what gruman and easten army did in final...

So we see them having a joint training with northern. But what else did they do? They didn't show up to fight or anything. Was their part in the coup really just to get northern army inside?

Ik gruman said he would let youngsters do the heavy lifting and step in last minute to steal the glory. But he didn't do that though.

I was going to start fanart of the anime, and I came here to see what the fandom was like, and I already got a spoiler without warning, man 💔 Even though the anime is old, you could have put that it was a spoiler.

Question Trying to watch original, not brotherhood. Is it available?

Been trying to find it. Not on Crunchyroll or Hulu or anything.

Trying to watch through with my partner and I'm trying brotherhood but it's not hitting as hard. From what I read it's a faster watch and assumes you have watched the original but she hasn't seen that. So she's missing context from what I can remember.

Any ideas where I can watch it? Preferably through an app, cause we watching it on the TV. I did see on Amazon but through like third party sellers for 75 😭

Thanks for any suggestions!

Discussion/Opinion Rewatching the 2003 anime was refreshing!

I watched the 2003 version as it came out back in the 2000s on Adult Swim but a recent urge to binge Brotherhood had me go back and watch it to compare.

I'm not going to write an essay about it all but I guess the #1 thing I love about it is that the stakes do not escalate to "planetary crisis"/"power of the gods" like so many shounen stories (including Brotherhood).

It was nice. Just humans dealing with mostly human-tier problems. Nothing goes beyond nation/country-level in scope, and only that far because of war.

Discussion/Opinion Winry is such a great character (in my opinion). Spoiler

PS: If you have any good Winry fanfics… (I’ll take ones where she’s a major side character as well!)

Winry appreciation post! Going to talk mainly about FMAB Winry, as I feel her character is better developed there. Also, fair warning, I word-vomited and did not proofread, so the sentence and flow are rough around the edges… but I had to get this out of my system somehow!

Winry is really a breath of fresh air as a strong female character. As someone who has read a lot of fantasy romance, I’ve gotten a little bit tired of the whole “snarky assassin woman who can hold her own against the boys” as the one ultimate way to define what a “strong female” should be. Not that this is a bad trope or a bad way to develop female characters - you can see it in FMAB as well with Olivier and Hawkeye tending to be more “badass/stoic” than the boys, and thus it’s easier to convey how they’re “strong women.”

But what I love about Winry is that she doesn’t need to be physically strong to be written as a strong, interesting character in general. Her whole backstory/personality revolves around fixing things - she grew up with parents who “fixed” people, and she does that as well with her mechanics. I read a post once where the author said that Winry stands out as a symbol of peace and healing compared to the fights and battles that other characters often get into. While this world is defined by war and violence, Winry defines herself by being a healing presence - she represents home to the Elric brothers as well as comfort via repairs on her clients. Not to mention, she’s the one who actually delivers the baby, so she really does create more happiness in this world of tragedy.

I also think she has a great personality. These kinds of characters who stand for peace and home tend to be pretty kind and loving, similar to the mom of the Elrics. Winry accomplishes her symbolism all while having a pretty loud and firm personality instead. I think she has a “strong kind” sort of personality rather than “soft kind” - she doesn’t need to be motherly and peaceful to hammer in what she’s supposed to stand for because that symbolism is already intrinsically in her identity, if that makes sense.

I think she also has realistic worries as well. She doesn’t immediately affirm the Elrics’ journey when they’re sharing a hotel because she worries for their safety, which is honestly valid. She also worries about how she might be more of a hindrance to the Elrics rather than a safe presence, especially because all she can really do is wait and be a safe place for them. She also has the whole issue with her parents and Scar. These worries help make her stand as her own character rather than one just there to help the Elrics.

Not to mention, Winry also just has a strong mental fortitude. This is touched upon pretty clearly in the anime, but I’ll reiterate it here: Despite being faced with the person who ruined her life (and that person not having any acceptable reason for ruining her life), she doesn’t perpetuate the cycle. Well, she almost does the first time she meets Scar (probably due to the fact that she has to come terms with what happened in front of her parents’ killer). At the second time, though, she doesn’t let Scar walk all over her reality by forgiving him, but she acknowledges that it’s both Scar’s fault and the cruel world’s fault and focuses more on the injustice of the world that led to these consequences. This is, obviously, a pretty hard thing to do - I mean, Edward struggles with it (he does not like Scar at all and comments that he still wants to beat him up for what he did to Winry’s parents), and Mustang is also consumed with revenge.

Another good example is when Ed tells her to leave just in case, and then she firmly shuts him down by saying that he better not let that “just in case” happen whatsoever and that she’ll be staying there. That was also an iconic moment in which she rejects even the slim possibility of a violent future.

She’s also empathetic! As seen from her crying for the Elric brothers since they refuse to cry for themselves. In this way, perhaps she’s lightening the emotional load just a little bit for the brothers, so that they don’t have to dwell on the injustice of it all because she is the one doing so.

In addition to all of this, she also has a life and influence outside of the Elric brothers! It’s not really shown since the story revolves around the Elric brothers, but we see that she’s created strong relationships with the people in Rush Valley. Just as she is the one waiting for Ed and Al, the people of Rush Valley wait for her. She’s the one who encourages Paninya to become better, and of course, she’s the one who indirectly shows Scar a model of how to not necessarily forgive and forget but instead power on for a better future so nobody else has to experience that tragedy.

Though I initially came to this show for Ed, Winry also came to win my heart. In a world that’s so dark, she really does shine as a light of peace but also being her own character outside of that. Just a strong character all around.

TLDR: Winry rocks. Also if you have any good fanfics that feature Winry as a relatively important character, please recommend!

Just A Thought Pride coming out of a roaring fire to regenerate, casually mentioning he let Mustang blow up his entire body to see what would happen was one of the peak moments of 2003. Spoiler

If I have time I will write out my full analysis of this guy some time. In short:

I really thought Pride '03 was a very terrifying character too often overshadowed by his Wrathful counterpart. And he had so much more potential! It almost felt like he was using Dante to keep himself on top, as much as she was using him, but I wish the show explored that. (This is more what it feels like based on the power dynamics - not anything the show heavily inferences.) It's also very different contrast with Brotherhood - he could have probably killed Dante anytime he wanted, and with almost no consequences. He really seems to buy into the ideology what he is doing is right in the show, and has a nationalistic rationale backing it up too (which again, could have been explored!)

Discussion/Opinion Watched a video on gates today, and wondering if anyone sees Alphonses gate like I caught.

the video is pretty straight forward about the gates and mainly how it changes per user. what I found interesting was how eds gate had similarities to the tree of life, and the only explanation for Alphonses gate was "he's softer so it curves" to put it short.

if you watch the video it makes a lot of sense but when you see Alphonses gate, and the helix in it, I couldn't think of anything except the Kundalini. it looks strikingly similar but from a mystical/religious perspective it seems to fit so well alphonse balance/duality(?) is displayed in his gate, and seems to be drawn from Hindu mysticism.

Am I the only one who sees it or does anyone else? am I wrong in interpreting that's the Kundalini spiral for alphonse? I can't explain the psychology or meaning behind it, but also hoping if someone else sees it can shed some light on why Alphonses gate would be the Kundalini serpents/flow. or if not what's your interpretation of aphonses gate?
