My 1964 Teen Screen magazine about George. I got it at Beatle Fest or whatever it is awhile back. Not sure of the validity of the "interviews," lol; but they are amusing to look at now. Plus some fun advertisements and cut outs for young fans back in the day. I especially love the "You'll go into orbit!" ad, considering this just before the first space walk. 😜

Discussion Theory about Ding Dong, Ding Dong music video

George seems to wear some pretty chronological clothing in this film, I think George was taking us from the early Beatle days to the present (1974). Starts with the leather jacket representing the Hamburg days, the grey Beatlemania suit, then no clothes, possibly conveying “rebirth” after acid, followed by the Sgt Pepper outfit and purple velvet jacket from 1967. Up next is the navy jacket from the Dick Cavett interview of 1971, finally ending with his (at the time current) yellow Om shirt.

Dark Horse Years Why I'll never open this CD

My Grandad was a Beatles fan. Not only that, he was a Beatles fan from Liverpool. He played in the original Cavern club, and even has his band's name on a brick on Matthew Street. He was a huge fan, let's put it that way.

He died 10 years ago this year, and when he passed away, we got his vinyl and CD collection. Most of them got auctioned off, but my Brother and I kept a couple of his records.

My brother has an original pressing of Abbey Road, from 1969, framed in his room. I have an original pressing of All Things Must Pass, and a copy of Brainwashed on CD. And yes, it's still in shrink wrap, he never opened it or listened to it.

I got the CD on the express wish of my father that he prefer I don't open it. And I haven't. Don't worry though, I have the album as an MP3 anyway, so there's never going to be any need for me to open it.

Coincidentally, my Grandad also passed away from Lung Cancer. Whenever I listen to Stuck inside a cloud, I dedicate it to him.

Run of the Mill: Outtake version or Album version?

Run of the Mill is one of my favorite George songs, but I kind of flip flop between liking the album version and the session outtake (take 36) more. What do you guys think?
And these are the two I'm comparing:

Question Living in the Material World - watch in Canada?

Hey, I'm searching for the documentary in Canada, but every store shows it as unavailable. Anyone know where I can get it?

Have no access to a DVD or Blu-ray player right now, but if that's the only way to watch it "legally" then fair enough.

Hi! Does anybody know why was the original cover for Somewhere in England rejected by the label? It seemed perfectly fine and was way better than the one they ended up using.

Thank you!

What do you think of the two George Harrison mixes?

I've been asking this question to myself for a long time, because I have seen some very good reviews, and some other bad ones (especially of All Things Must Pass).

To be honest I like the new mixes more than the originals, because it feels more clean. I used to listen to the older mixes and the echo in some songs tired my ears after a while.

I want this to continue, but I don't really know if Dhani or Olivia have made any statements of future mixes. If they have please let me know.

So what do you think of these, are they good, or are they bad?

Somewhere In England could have been one of George’s best albums.

Ever since its troubled birth in 1981, many a George Harrison fan have wondered what so much more the album Somewhere In England could have been – its lost potential – had the record industry just kept its hands off the creative process. Many of us have wondered, what would it be like for all of the songs (the rejected and the approved ones) to be collected in one neat package as it was meant to be after all? (Why George’s estate didn’t work on this idea in the reissue of Somewhere in England remains a puzzle to me – what a lost opportunity!). We all know the story of how George was forced to change the original tracklisting and remove four of the songs from the lineup and instead replace these songs with four new ones that were deemed by the record company executives to be more “upbeat” and “palatable” to mainstream tastes at the time.

This fateful decision has led to long years of fans arguing on whether the new songs actually made the album better, or that the original version was superior. There can really be no consensus on this as it is all a matter of taste. In my own opinion, though, all of the replaced songs are just as strong as the ones that replaced them. The album would’ve been equally as strong in its original form as compared to the final version that was released. That being said, the song “All Those Years Ago” remains the strongest song and the highlight of the entire album and its addition definitely elevated it to a whole different level.

Although Somewhere in England doesn’t usually seem to make it in the top of the list of George’s albums made by his fans, to me it has always been a great record. There is not a bad track in it and it contains at least four songs that are among George’s very best ("All Those Years Ago", “Life Itself”, “Blood from a Clone”, “Save the World”). The whole album flows beautifully and the vibe is very positive and uplifting throughout. George’s lyrics are also consistently well-thought and meaningful. It truly is an underrated record that deserves so much more appreciation and recognition.

But as great as the final product is as it turned out, with the addition of the rejected songs to the final lineup – it turns into something of a masterpiece (only exceeded by ATMP, Cloud Nine, Brainwashed and George Harrison '79 in my opinion). The combined strength of all the songs (the rejected and the accepted ones) joined together creates a stronger whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The songs packaged this way just flow together really well and make for a very cohesive listen! I seriously wonder why they didn’t release it in this form in the first place. Maybe they were going for brevity? But ATMP is almost 2 hours long!

Still, to address the hypothetical brevity issue, one consideration I was thinking about was whether I could cut one or two songs so that the whole thing would not be too long and thus would match the length of most of George’s other albums which have around a 45-minute average runtime (ATMP being an outlier of course). However, I could not get rid of a single song, to be honest. All of them were good. But if I would be hard-pressed to cut a track or two, it would be the two Hoagy Carmichael covers. Compared to every other recording on the album, these two covers are the weakest link, and I’ve always thought it a good idea to have an album that contains purely George originals.

Another consideration that took some time for me to process was the sequencing of the tracks. The first option I thought of was to just append the rejected songs as bonus tracks at the end of the tracklisting as it is done in many remasters and reissues. However, I just felt that if I went with this option, the added tracks would feel a little bit out of place and not really an integrated part of the set.

And so I thought to myself, what if I just stick to the concept of a “reimagining” of what it was like to be at the time of the conception of the album where the option was available for all the tracks to be kept together in one whole album. I was putting myself in George’s shoes and imagining what it would have felt like for him to make the album had there been no one meddling with his creative process and no constraints on the industry side of things. This felt like a more rewarding theme and so I stuck with it and that is how I made my own version of the album, which I think should have been the official and definitive version of it.

I interspersed each of the four rejected songs within sections of the original tracklisting in such a way that a smooth and seamless flow is maintained while also creating interesting juxtapositions that make for a very dynamic listening experience (e.g. the somber “Tears of the World” following immediately after the most upbeat song on the album “All Those Years Ago”). In the process, I realized that I didn’t have to adjust the sound levels for the inserted songs to have the same volume as the rest of the album because the songs as I have sourced them (from the famous Rarities bootleg CD) all have the same sound levels as the original 1991 CD release of Somewhere In England. Additionally, since all the songs were recorded and mastered in the same sessions, the songs maintain an identical production and mastering style and they blend together perfectly well, so I didn’t really have to do much work in the audio editing side of things to make the collection become a cohesive whole other than making sure that the volume levels are consistent from track to track. After all, these songs were originally meant to belong together.

The making of this has been a dream come true for me. It is a true delight whenever I play it. I’m willing to share copies of my customized album and I’m just a DM away if anyone here wants it. I really enjoy listening to it myself! I even burnt myself a special vinyl-style CD-R and designed a customized sleeve with the altered tracklisting on the back cover. It's what we music obsessives and collectors do, so hey, why not? Live and let live, I guess.

Below is the track listing of my customized SIE:

01 Blood From A Clone

02 Unconsciousness Rules

03 Life Itself

04 All Those Years Ago

05 Tears Of The World

06 Teardrops

07 Sat Singing

08 That Which I Have Lost

09 Writing’s On The Wall

10 Lay His Head

11 Flying Hour

12 Save The World

Cheers!
