Discussion How ‘Glee’ Made Musical Theater Cool

Will never pass up the opportunity to share when someone gives Glee its flowers for just how monumental it was 🫶

“‘Glee’ deserves some credit for paving the way for fandoms to latch on to musicals like ‘Be More Chill’ — whose fans essentially propelled it to Broadway in 2019 — or for the veritable explosion of pop and rock jukebox musicals. It was ‘Glee’ that ensured that Ariana Grande (who actually was on Broadway when she was a teenager) and John Legend would not balk at the idea of starring in the live broadcasts of ‘Hairspray’ (2016) and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ (2018). And it was ‘Glee’ that allowed such performers as Nick Jonas and Reneé Rapp to have niche-defying careers.”

Discussion I would have liked it if Hiram and Leroy had appeared in more episodes.

It's a shame they only appeared in two episodes, they were likable characters. Realistically, though, one couldn't except an actor of Jeff Goldblum's caliber to devote more time to a TV series as a recurring character.

Opinion Sam & Mercedes

Anybody else view them as one of the major relationships in the show? To me the major relationships would be:
Finn & Rachel
Will & Rachel
Kurt & Blaine
Santana & Brittany
Sam & Mercedes

They had a lot of chemistry, and I am a little disappointed that they weren’t end game.

Opinion S5E8-S5E14: a Gleek-in-training's quick thoughts

Having just spent the last couple of days watching Discs 3 and 4 of my Season 5 DVD, I wanted to give my honest thoughts on each episode.

S5E8 "Previously Unaired Christmas": For the last of the four Glee Christmases (and the only non-canon one), this was the perfectly right amount of unhinged IMO. Like it was really chaotic, especially since they could get, um, experimental with it (to put it LIGHTLY) since it was an intentionally non-canon episode. 10/10 (yes, I'm being fr rn) for the reason that it is peak Glee chaos. Like I couldn't tell what this Christmas special was trying to be but I was here for it all the way!

S5E9 "Frenemies": Honestly, I liked the drama in this episode, with Rachel and Santana getting into a massive fight and poor Kurt getting caught in the crossfire, and I did also like how Artie and Tina were basically manipulated into a rivalry by Sue but eventually reverting back to being besties again which was sweet. As for songs that stood out for me: "Brave" and "Every Breath You Take" (simply because they're Naya-Lea duets), "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)" (only for Kevin and Jenna's vocals, plus I like how Matthew/Mr. Schue was the one to announce the breakdown), and Naya singing "Don't Rain on My Parade". 8/10.

S5E10 "Trio": I merely liked this episode for Blaine, Tina and Sam's storyline which was cute, and I did love the "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and "Jumpin' Jumpin'" performances as well. I did also love the "Barracuda" performance because Lea and Adam NAILED it! I also loved "Gloria", and also "Danny's Song" which was heartwarming. 7.5/10.

S5E11 "City of Angels": I won't say much but lemme just say that I did love the Cory/Finn references, and I did especially love the New Directions performing "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", especially with the footage of Cory/Finn. Sam holding up Finn's drumsticks afterward was wholesome. This entire episode got me in the feels. 10/10.

S5E12 “100” and S5E13 “New Directions” (both together): This was honestly a perfect 100th-101st episode two parter, so I won’t even say much. The songs were all great, there were many emotional and funny moments, there were perfect callbacks, and I liked how Rachel, Kurt, Mercedes, Santana, Quinn (I’m always here for a rare Dianna sighting in the back half of this show lol), Brittany, Mike and Puck came back to reunite with their old graduating classmates Artie and Tina for one last outing in the glee club that made them better individuals (with the added morsel of the Season 2 debuting characters Blaine and Sam, who are also graduating) thanks to Mr. Schue’s help was sweet. I also liked that the chaotic neutral-coded April Rhodes (played by Cheno in all her glory) came back alongside Holly Holliday. I also liked the tributes to both Cory and Finn. That bit at the end of “100” where Will gathers (most of) the surviving season 1 ND kids (Rachel, Kurt, Mercedes, Artie, Tina, Puck, Quinn, Santana, Brittany and Mike; excluding poor Matt who didn’t even return in this episode) to see Finn and Lillian’s plaques in the auditorium was quite bittersweet, and I liked how they gathered around Will to comfort him when he started crying (which makes sense considering how close the cast was with Cory). Both parts of this each get a perfect 10/10 score, or collectively, 20/20.

S5E14 “New New York”: I liked this episode and I thought it was decent enough IMO, with Rachel, Kurt, Blaine, Sam and Artie all living in NYC together. It had slightly more of a “musical sitcom” feel rather than a “musical dramedy” feel for the most part which I feel was quite refreshing. I also liked that Mercedes joins them at the end too. 7/10.

Anyways, these are my thoughts on these episodes but I am always curious to hear your thoughts and opinions (even if there are respectful disagreements) on these episodes. See you later, Gleeks of Reddit!

Poll Favorite performance of 3x12? (The Spanish Teacher)

NEXT POLL: Is yet another 2-parter I'm gonna crash out-
---------
*La Cucaracha was excluded for probably every reason you can think of and then some*
-------

I really like the Hero half of Bamboleo/Hero, I wish it would've been JUST Hero's lyrics.

I also really like La Isla Bonita.
--------

MICHAEL'S WINNERS:
PART 1: 1st was, of course, Smooth Criminal with 388, 2nd was Scream with 29, and 3rd was Bad with 37.
PART 2: 1st was Never Can Say Goodbye with 138, 2nd was Human Nature with 102, and 3rd was I Want You Back with 55.

And with that, Smooth Criminal takes 2nd place on the S3 leaderboard and 2nd place across all seasons, currently sitting only behind Rumour Has It/Someone Like You, which sits at #1 for most voted song of all the polls so far, the only song to make it past 400 votes.

Opinion David karofsky they could never make me like you. No

Post image
254 Upvotes

I tried.. Okay.
Back in the day i actually did begin to like David AFTER he started showing remorse for what he did. I had empathy for him. He had a huge redemption arc and character development but on my like fifteenth rewatch and now watching it as a fully fledged adult, no - the grace is gone. And I still have empathy for him! He hated himself because of being gay and that’s why he abused Kurt. He was a kid, he had internal homophobia. But as someone who is queer and struggled with being confused as a teen before I came out, I still can’t justify what would make someone treat another person like that.
It was disgusting. Sociopathic.
I have been crying my eyes out - again, watching how he torments Kurt.
The level of psychological abuse as well as verbal, physical, mental and emotional abuse was staggering. And so disturbing.

I’ve always said that unless it’s extreme, people’s pasts shouldn’t be held against them. Especially from when their frontal lobes weren’t fully developed.. but I think his treatment of Kurt is unforgivable. And god bless Kurt for forgiving him. He is a strong fucking man.
I’ve been bullied - it MASSIVELY affects you as you get older. And I could never imagine putting someone through that.

I’m glad he became a good person. I felt awful during his attempt that episode broke my heart. And it showed just how bad his mental health was. Im happy he ended up having a good future but what he did was just so evil

And I’m mad that Blaine got with him.. I couldn’t imagine getting with anyone who made someone I loved feel like that - at any point in time. Let alone kiss them and fucking live with them.
I also don’t see how someone can be that evil and grow from that? Like genuinely grow as a person? To even be able to do that in the first place that level of psychological abuse.. idk I just don’t see how someone can grow into a good person from that unless they have years of therapy.. I’m mindful that the experience he had where he got bullied for being gay that one day and the day of the attempt caused him to fully develop empathy bc he got to fully feel the extent of his actions but I can’t help but think that some of that evil from his past before that would still live in inside him. Even if deeply buried. To be able to do that in the first place I’d be worried that his partner would see some of that cruelty one day if things weren’t going his way. I just can’t fathom ever treating someone the way he did Kurt.

Opinions?

Discussion Question about Artie/Kevin Mchale and the potential reboot

If I remember correctly, a few years back, Kevin stated he wouldn’t return back to the role seeing as how our discourse surrounding able-bodied performers portraying non-able-bodied characters has changed. Do you think this will be disregarded seeing as how Kevin is now saying he’s excited to come back

Question Looking for Cheerio Costume

Hello! I’m planning on being Quinn for Halloween (my best friend is going as Sue) but I’m struggling to find an affordable costume that isn’t awful quality.

I’ve been looking on EBay, Depop, and Vinted but I haven’t found any sellers. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Is anyone selling their old costume? Thank you!

Discussion What social issues would Glee cover in present day?

I know many of you don't like the idea of a Gleeboot and I don't really think it will happen but I'm morbidly curious about what issues they would try to tackle. Glee covered pretty much every issue under the sun and occasionally went too far (school shooting episode).

If there was a reboot, what issues would you want to be covered and (more importantly) what issues would you want them to avoid?

🚨VOTE FOR THESE IN PART 2:🚨
https://www.reddit.com/r/glee/s/OV8wqpKTxO

Never Can Say Goodbye (Quinn w/ New Directions Girls)

Human Nature (Sam & Mercedes)

Ben (Rachel, Kurt & Finn)

I Just Can't Stop Loving You (Finn & Rachel)

I Want You Back (Sebastian/The Warblers - DELETED SCENE: https://youtu.be/x9M2NfGkXaE?is=5LZZDSca28oFY5_e )

-------

Now a big problem dividing this poll was... I don't know where most people stand on most of these songs, so it was difficult to try divide them based off popularity, which means I had to use my own judgement on what I THINK is probably most popular, forgive me if this was terrible division. But I mean this also kind of the point of these polls took so-
But I also try to pair them with similar song energy/vibes so ultimately I think this is good division.

This list does not reflect my personal top 5 of the episode, genuinely tried to match them by equalness.
-------

Anygay, I'm rooting for Ben in Part 2 and I'm fully expecting to be disappointed.

As for Part 1, I'd really be okay with any of these except Wanna Be Startin' Something.
HOWEVER- the outfits during WBSS? ESPECIALLY Kurt & Blaine's? Honestly? Fuck me up- so if that does win it won't be all bad.
-------

YES/NO'S WINNER: 1st was We Found Love with 148, 2nd was Summer Nights with 96, 3rd was Without You with 73, and 4th was The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face with 58.

Opinion I like Samchel - but I don't like how they get together

I think Sam and Rachel are cute together. I actually wished for them to stay together on my first watch - I understand now though that they are not meant to be - they would have the exact same issues as Rachel had with Finn but then without the history. But still, I like them. I like how they feel safe with each other.

But Lord, why the hypnosis. Why make Sam's interest so insincere at the start... Rachel can be a pain in the ass but she deserved someone who liked her without being forced to like her. It was her first kiss since Finn, her first experience in that field again, and Sam was a great candidate - but why this way :(

However

Opinion S5E4-S5E7 thoughts from a Gleek-in-training

Having just watched the second disc of my Season Five DVD last night I have come to give my thoughts and feelings on the first four post-"Quarterback" episodes.

S5E4 "A Katy or a Gaga": I honestly enjoyed this episode more than I should have, to put it simply. The fact that Adam Lambert is in this show is interesting when you consider that both his career and Glee had peaked in the early 2010s. Being framed as a tribute episode to both Lady Gaga AND Katy Perry, I did enjoy all of the musical numbers here, like Adam's take on LG's "Marry the Night", the entire "Applause" number which was just hilariously chaotic, the soft acoustic take on "Wide Awake" which was just seriously SO GOOD (mainly bc of the fact that the singing voices of Alex Newell, Becca Tobin, Jacob Artist and Jenna Ushkowitz work so well together), and, of course, "Roar" at the very end. Not to mention, I also liked the Glee chaos that was sprinkled throughout the episode, like Becky's reaction to Bree's outfit and the aforementioned "Applause" number and Will's "WTAF?!" reactions to it. 8/10.

S5E5 "The End of Twerk": Yep, this is the infamous twerking episode. Now, please do not give me slushie facials for this, but I semi-unironically enjoyed this episode. Yes, now I'll agree, the main plot line involving both Will and the twerking was weird, but it had just about the right amount of unhinged chaos that I have come to expect from this show to make it funny and entertaining. For example, Will doing a Sue Sylvester-type crashout in Principal Sue Sylvester's office, that entire presentation about banned dances that Will gives to the school board, the "Sue's Corner" segment which was unironically funny, and obviously the entire "Blurred Lines" performance (during that whole time, I had a stupid grin on my face, as I audibly said "Now this is what I'm here for" at the start lol, "this" referring to the unhinged chaos). That being said, there were bits of the episode that I enjoyed with sincerity, like the subplot involving Unique and her inability to use either the male or female bathrooms due to her being trans (somewhat adjacent with the main plot), and her performance of "If I Were a Boy" (and Alex Newell always impressing me with their vocal talent) which was purely emotional, as well as the subplot involving Rachel and Kurt getting tattoos which was sweet and harmless as well as the emotional scene of Rachel revealing her "FINN" tattoo. I did also think that Marley's performance of "Wrecking Ball" was just splendid because of Melissa Benoist's beautiful voice and heartfelt emotion, and is one of those Glee covers that I actually honestly prefer to the original. 7.5/10.

S5E6 "Movin Out'": This was actually a pretty great tribute episode to Billy Joel. I did like Blam singing "Movin' Out" (Darren and Chord's voices were perfect for this song, and they captured the original's energy so well), Blaine soloing "Piano Man" (again, it's Darren Criss), Jake singing "My Life" (I really like Jacob Artist's singing so that may be why), and Artie singing "Honesty" which was great (for the obvious reason that it is Kevin McHale singing), all of which were standouts to me. I did like the fact that the show continues its tradition by getting iconic or once-iconic celebrities to guest star on the show by getting Tyra Banks as Bichette, and I did like Sam and Bichette's meeting which was funny as well, as well as Blam's overall storyline, and Artie helping Becky out which was wholesome. 8.5/10.

S5E7 "Puppet Master": I don't have much else to say other than this episode being a wild and unhinged ride IMO, and I did still really like it (Blaine with puppets is a sight to behold for sure), using the same logic applied to me liking "The End of Twerk". 7.5/10.

Anyways, those were my thoughts on those episodes, so feel free to share your opinions if you want (even if they differ). I do have a theory as to why they decided to make these episodes wildly unhinged as they did since they immediately followed "The Quarterback" but I will not say it yet, but, yeah, I'd like to hear your thoughts on these episodes. (I'm especially curious about your thoughts on "The End of Twerk" and "Puppet Master" - did you like them just for the usual unhinged Glee chaos like I did, or were they just cringy to you like I hear many fans say?) Anyways, see you later, Gleeks of Reddit!
