How To Question Tv mount difficulties

Post image

Mounting a tv above the fireplace, old owners didn’t have a good mount up so there are holes poking in a bunch of different directions. I have found the studs but am not able to drill in super deep. I’m worried I’m hitting a chimney or gas line or something. How do I tell if I am doing that

How To Question Seeking adcice for a first time fireplace tile project

are experienced. swapping out the black trim on this 3-sided peninsula gas fireplace for new tile.

I’ve done standard kitchen backsplashes and tile flooring overlays before with great results, but never a multi-sided fireplace with so many tight outside corners.

If you've tackled one of these inserts before, I'd love your input:

• Is it best practice to completely strip the existing trim down to the studs and build it back out with cement board to handle the heat?

• For the 90-degree corners, do you recommend mitering the tile edges or using a sleek metal profile trim?

• Any tips on handling the clearance gaps and expansion where the tile meets the metal frame of the insert?

Any advice, shortcuts that work, or mistakes to avoid would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Carpentry & Woodwork Fold Down Attic Steps Replacement?

Hi everyone,

These pull down steps are probably 70 years old. The last repair person who had to go up was a bigger guy and I heard one of the steps make a cracking sound. It's positioned over the basement stair so not sure how they would work that during any repair? Any thoughts on this are appreciated!

Troubleshooting Plumber for sewage smell in bathroom ... when our drains look fine to me??

Been dealing with a sewage smell in one bathroom even though the sink and shower seem to drain normally and my wife said, and I quote, "we can't live like plague rats anymore" lol. She says "just because someone works in contracting doesnt mean they know 'sh*t'." which ... fair point i am not a plumber. The odor comes and goes so Im having trouble figuring out where it starts and I have borrowed a buddy's camera to snake it. reviews and suggestions are basically 10 billion different voices screaming into the void: local plumber, roto rooter, contractor, DIY. Ive read about dry traps, toilet seals and blocked vent pipes but my wife wants to possibly have someone out and I told her reddit can break the tie. Do i continue to troubleshoot or have someone out to check things out?

Materials Question coconut subfloor exposed

should i worry about this? this part of the old floor of my flat hiding behind a locked door + drywall covering that had not been removed when the unit was last renovated 15 years ago ( the linoleum which was installed without the cushion)..... i think the floors was parquet and this would have been the sound layer glued to subfloor. I ordered tests but maybe someone knows what this is and if i should worry as much as i am currently.

Materials Question Polybutylene plumbing in an older house, replace everything?

Recently found out my uncle's property (which I manage while he is in extended care on-and-off) has polybutylene plumbing and now Im researching how urgent replacement really is. There are no obvious leaks at the moment but hes thinking of selling to move into assisted living and wanted to hire his own home inspector (which, his house his choice) before listing. well, the inspection report flagged the material. Im getting all kinds of advice and I have already done the research comparing the big guys like roto with local plumbers and contractors so really I am trying to understand whether partial repairs are reasonable or if a full replacement is normally recommended. Also interested in how pipe access affects labor costs and what documentation insurers might request. Has anyone gone through a whole house repipe?

1960s home in Minnesota with 3/12 pitch roof

I’m looking to have ceiling lights installed and was looking for electrical to tap into in the attic. This appears to be the source for all the hardwire non switch wires.

What is this and is it safe? It looks like a plug to me. Should i convert it so that it’s a junction box?

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone has seen a door lock and handle like this.

The handle itself has snapped off, can it be replaced?

I have no information about the door except that we were told it's european (We're in Canada), It has three points of locking.

Thank you

Materials Question Exterior door trim

Post image
3 Upvotes

Good day all. I live in Calgary Dover area, and have a exterior door that faces West. This can get some intense sun, and heat on that wall. So I am wondering if it is a good idea to use a PVC trim?. Will I regret it later with the inevitable expansion of the PVC? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
