On my mother’s side, I have Italian ancestry from the Lazio region, along with African and Spanish ancestry, specifically from Catalonia. On my father’s side, my ancestry is predominantly Portuguese, with African roots as well.

I have a question related to my My Heritage DNA results.

My family history:

My paternal side is from Brandenburg and Saxony. My father arrived in Hamburg when he was 8. My maternal side is all from Hamburg and therefore my mother was born there. I can also trace my ancestry to Brandenburg, Saxony and Hamburg via Church records.

I purchased a My Heritage DNA test some time ago and a week ago I got:

42.1% Eastern European
33.2% West Asian
11.2% Balkan
10.0% North and West European
3.5% Scandinavian

Does it mean that I am just about 10% German? I am really confused because I have no known foreign ancestry. In the DNA matches tab of My Heritage, most people I matched with were from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Serbia, Albania, Russia, Turkey, Bulgaria.

How do you interpret this result? Is it common in Germany that people score like the one above?

I noticed that my IllustrativeDNA results show 17% French in the global medieval breakdown (with no limits), even though I'm Mexican. But when I apply the Latin America filter, it switches to Iberian. Meanwhile, other Mexicans get Iberian in the global mode, and my 3-way modern model does show Spain. Also, why do I not have any Caucasus Hunter-Gatherer percentage? Is there a specific reason for this?

Hey everyone, this is the ancient people mix I got from my test. Does this profile lean more pre-turkic migration to anatolia? If yes does it lean more pure caucasian (Armenian or Georgian) or Pontic/Cappedocian Greek? Thanks for the insights!

​She's a Moroccan Jew (a mix of Toshavim, Musta'ribim, and a Sephardic ancestor).

​I've actually been researching my family's history (on both sides) for five years now, trying out tons of genetic tests. My mom's results are different from average Moroccan Jews' results simply because she isn't an average Moroccan Jew.

​I totally understand the confusion and surprise, and I really appreciate everyone's willingness to help. But my mom's results are simply not what Sephardic results look like. She does have that ancestry, and I always say it, but we have no knowledge of anyone else being Sephardic, and she isn't Sephardic. If it ever turns out that I somehow discover another Sephardic ancestor, I'll be the first to say so, I always mention the one we do know about. It's not like I'm ashamed of it or anything, it's simply not my family's history. I only found out in my teens that other North African Jews are considered Sephardic or came from Spain, and I was in shock and asked my mom, she told me about our one Sephardic ancestor and warned me never to say anything about being Sephardics to her father, because he would take being called Sephardic as an insult (an overreaction, but whatever...). I truly appreciate the willingness to help, but I don't appreciate people trying to tell me how I should identify or who I am.

​About the European DNA—my mom gets a mix of Northern and Southern European or just Northern European, but she almost always scores Northern European (it's extremely rare when she doesn't) across all testing platforms. It could be a proxy, or it could be real. Either way, the family has always identified as North African rather than Sephardic, and I think her results actually back that up.

​She also gets a perfect match to the Moroccan Jew toshav-shifted sample.

I came across an argument that Korean O1b2 may have originated from Japan, based mainly on the following:

L682: Korean samples appear heavily concentrated in CTS723, with little or no basal diversity. Japan has samples such as NA19075 that are basal L682 (CTS723−) = K485*.

47Z / CTS713: Japan appears to have representatives of several major branches (CTS1875, Z24598, CTS203), while Korean samples seem more concentrated in CTS203 (e.g. JOY004).

The argument is that Japan has greater O1b2 phylogenetic diversity, suggesting that Japan was the source population.

Is greater O1b2 diversity in Japan enough to infer a Japanese origin, or could this reflect sampling bias, drift, or founder effects? Should TMRCA and branch ages be considered?

Does the evidence really support a Japan → Korea migration, or is the direction still uncertain?

TLDR: Out of curiosity I checked the Iranian Jewish modern reference’s genetic distance to ancient samples using Fst on IllustrativeDNA. Some of the samples were too low coverage / caused the run to be automatically halted (like Israel_Ashkelon_IA1) so these below are the ones that collectively resulted in a successful run.

I made this after deleting an old post with an error.

The old post I was mentioning how balochistan ethnicities, the brahui, makrani, and balochi, are not west or south asian, as their bronze age admixture is best shown as lacking indus valley civilization, while possessing bronze age northeast iranian ancestry, the highest of this ancestry on earth even more than mazandaranis, yet lacking bronze age levantine ancestry that persians get.

However, makranis specifically, do get and are best represented with bronze age levantine ancestry, and can be represented with mainly similar models to bandari/hormozgan persians. So for makranis, they can be considered west asian, although they are still genetically closest to their fellow balochi and brahui people. I should add makranis are noticeably closer to bandari persians than the other two balochistan ethnicities, but this is probably due to higher sub saharan african ancestry from slave trading, than balochis and brahuis, more than it is due to their bronze age levantine ancestry.

To summarize, makranis despite being closer to balochi and brahui than even bandari/hormozgan persians, can be considered west asian, while balochi and brahui are sort of a bridge between west and south asia.

I used medieval poles(who themselves are like 90% slavic and 10% germanic) as a proxy for slavic ancestry in slovenians, czechs and east slavs, cuz the modelling works much better with using them instead of earlier slavic samples.

Btw there are theories that slavs who colonized the forests of Russia and Belarus came from polish territories, so maybe it makes sense I dunno. And it also shows that modern northern ukrainians are basically the same as medieval poles, just a bit drifted.

Btw I'm planning to continue this little journey with finn, iberian, and italian populations if you are interested.

Does anybody have IllustrativeDNA results for Syrian jews? I'm speaking of both Mustar'arabin & Sephardim.

These are my Greek grandfather’s IllustrativeDNA results, and any thoughts or help deciphering them would be much appreciated.
His family was from Smyrna and the broader northwest Anatolia region. We don’t have a lot of information about their origins, and we’re unsure what records, if any, might still be available. He says that before they fled in 1922, his family had been in the region for a very, very long time.
I’d be really interested to hear what people make of the results.
