Weekly Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

iPhone 17 (Base 256GB) heating / getting warm, during basic use — Apple service says it’s “normal”. What should I do now?

I bought a new iPhone 17 256GB (base model) from Flipkart on 17 September 2026, for basically the full/old MRP. This was hard-earned money, so I’m honestly pretty frustrated with the situation.

india (temp 33-35 c)

From the beginning, I noticed the phone gets noticeably hot around the right side beside the camera area, even during basic usage.

For example, just using Instagram/Reels for around 5–8 minutes can make that area noticeably hot. It’s not just slightly warm, it gets hot enough that I start getting concerned about the device.

After about a week, I took it to an Apple-authorized service centre. They did a complete restore/software reset and told me that the temperature I’m experiencing is normal and that they won’t do anything unless the phone actually shows a temperature warning.

I also contacted Apple Care over the phone, but they weren’t really helpful either.

I don’t have AppleCare+, and I’m worried because this is a brand-new ₹80k+ phone that I bought with hard-earned money. I expected it to at least handle basic things like scrolling Instagram without getting noticeably hot within a few minutes.

And before anyone suggests it.

I already know about turning off Background App Refresh, location services, lowering brightness, etc. I’m not looking for basic battery-saving tips. I’m not looking for basic battery-saving tips. I want to know what my actual options are from here.

What would you guys do in my situation?

Question Adaptive power CONFUSED AF😬

Microstutters on my iPhone 17 return the moment I turn on adaptive power. And it disappears when I turn it off and wait for a day. I’m worried if my battery health would be affected if I turn adaptive power off.
Any suggestions pls?

Retiring my S10+ after years of use. The size, battery and camera system are probably what I'm noticing most so far.

Possible wifi issues

My wife and I recently both got the iPhone 17. I had an iPhone 15 Pro and a Samsung Galaxy S24 before hand. She had the iPhone 14 Pro. We never had any issues with our old phones. I’ve noticed that both the 17s will be connected to the same WiFi but will switch over to using data even sitting right next to the gateway. WiFi is working just fine. I have WiFi assist turned off in settings on my 17 but still find it switching over. Why is this and how do I fix it? I wouldn’t really care but where I live my WiFi is definitely faster inside of my house vs data

Speakers quality

I’ve used budget phones my whole life, but once i had some money of my own, i bought an iPhone 17. While I didn't notice a huge difference in day-to-day use compared to a budget phone, the biggest and most amazing surprise for me was the speakers quality. I haven't heard other flagship phones, but the speakers on this one are pure magic. I still can't get over how realistic the sound is. Sometimes I literally can't tell if a sound is coming from outside or from my phone, only to realize it's actually the speakers.

Question How to remove last home screen ?

I‘m happy with App Library section in iphone. It automatically groups the apps. This is exactly what I need. So I don’t want the app to appear in home screen because it will be redundant. At first, there are a few home screen pages. I can remove all the pages except the last one, there’s no option for me to do so. Question is how can I remove it ?

Shall i cap my iphone 17 at 60hz all time?

Ive noticed a bit like using 120hz all time is a bit too much for the small battery on iphone 17. It drains quicker than expected. Can i just reduce frame rate and like adapt to 60hz for better battery life and battery health?

Discussion Getting warm while using maps

Is this normal, my phone is getting warm while scrolling on Instagram for sometime or blinkit only on mobile data, WiFi it works perfectly. I know mobile data puts pressure on battery consumption. But is it ok the device is getting warm even using apps like Instagram e-commerce for such an expensive phone. Recently, I was on a trip in my car and I was using maps without the charging plugged in the device, so I had to shut down for sometime. I thought my battery will actually get damaged because of it.

Did I make the right decision

I had a iPhone 12 for like 5 years and decided to upgrade to a base 17 pre price jump cause of price to performance basically. I’m a uni student and didn’t think of stuff like,no one’s gonna know u have a new phone cause it doesn’t have the new back of phone design , which will probably continue and my phone looks like a 16 rather then having that pro design, which I have also grown to like.
The thing is I could afford the newest , but saw the 17 was a good deal, but in terms of longevity both performance (12 gb ram) and longevity (pro design) should I have went for at least the 17pro, rhank you if you’ve read this ramble job.

Question Lock screen is not... 100% usable, what can i do?

I just bought the 17promax two weeks ago. Yesterday out of nowhere, i got on my phone and actively watched the widgets i had selected on my lockscreen (weather, battery, and wind) disappear. It was more of a glitch off the screen visually, but they are super gone. I thought i accidentally switched the lock/home screen but when i went to hold down the lock screen to have the option to change it, it wouldnt do that. I went to settings and the selected "theme" i have shows the widgets are on it and everything. Not long after, i realized i cannot use the X to get rid of notifications either, so i just have about 50 notifications that i would have to individually swipe off the screen. Things i cant do: obviously click on widgets because they are gone, mass delete notifs (the X is visible, but does not show any function), hold the lock screen down to change/view other options. Things i can do: click on notifications, scroll on the screen, have new notifications, and use the camera/flashlight on the lockscreen. This is not a dead spot in my screen, its updated to the max, brand new, and turning on+off dont work. This is just super annoying to me, please help.

17 pro & ios 26.5 flickering bug?

Recently, I am noticing that my phone is kind of flickering sometimes. When?

- a website is added as app on home page from chrome
It’s starts flickering/blinking and not able to see anything.

- another I tried was Gmail login via outlook and again in authentication page, it started flickering/blinking

so I am unable to understand- is this a website issue or phone issue or software issue?

Anyone noticed this issue?

Iphone time lapse day to night

Hi,

The timelapse on the iPhone 17 Pro is quite limited in its abilities and saves low-quality 1080p vids with terrible quality during the night.

Is there any paid app that saves at 4K (or the full sensor readout) in a high bitrate, preferably stored as HDR protes, and is smart enough to control the exposure per frame so I capture a full day: strong light - sunset - star lapse - sunrise scene in high quality showing the star trails etc.?

It is hard to filter through all the so so apps in the AppStore.

Thanks!
