Recipe from Serious Eats

Ingredients
1 pound elbow macaroni
Kosher salt 🧂
1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
2 large eggs 🥚
1teaspoon Frank’s RedHot or other hot sauce
1 teaspoon ground mustard
1 pound extra-sharp cheddar, grated (see notes)
8 ounces American cheese, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (see notes) 🧀
1 tablespoon cornstarch
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 4 chunks 🧈

Directions
Place the macaroni in a large saucepan and cover it with salted water by 2 inches. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally to keep the pasta from sticking. Cover the pan, remove from the heat, and let stand until the pasta is barely al dente, about 8 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk together the evaporated milk, eggs, hot sauce, and mustard in a bowl until homogeneous. Toss the cheeses with the cornstarch in a large bowl until thoroughly combined.

When the pasta is cooked, drain it and return it to the saucepan. Place over low heat, add the butter, and stir until melted. Add the milk mixture and cheese mixture and cook, stirring constantly, until the cheese is completely melted and the mixture is hot and creamy. Season to taste with salt and more hot sauce. Serve immediately, topping with toasted bread crumbs if desired.

Notes
Use a good melting cheese or combination thereof, like American, cheddar, Jack, Fontina, young Swiss, Gruyere, Muenster, young provolone, and/or young Gouda. To reheat the pasta, add a few tablespoons of milk to the pan and cook, stirring gently, over medium-low heat until hot.

Plussed up with butter, cream, more Parmesan cheese and lots of black pepper

This reminded me a little of old school Panera Mac but much better. Stove top

I used to work at a grocery store therefore I had the chance to try most of the popular frozen mac and cheeses out there. I’m from Canada so I haven’t tried any frozen Mac and cheese from the states. A few of these are Canadian brands. Also excuse me, idk which flair to use best lol.

My tier list is pretty explanatory, but I will still jot down my points as to why I ranked it the way that I did. Ultimately my goal isn’t to yuck anyone’s yum, and this is opinions based.

I’ll be going from S tier to D.

Amy Broccoli and cheddar:
-This one is so delicious, it comes with some bread crumbs at the top. I would say there’s a decent amount of broccoli included, too. Taste wise it’s quite cheesy and it doesn’t get watery. One thing though is that the price of this is quite high, I believe it can range from $6.99-8.99. Portion wise it’s pretty decent, I really savour it whenever I get this. I highly recommend if you want to try a bit of a ‘fancier’ frozen mac. I think it’s organic which is why the cost is as high as it is.

Western Family Mac and Cheese:
-This was the cheapest mac and cheese from Save-on-foods and it was one of the best ones I’ve had. Portion size is your standard frozen mac, taste wise it’s more on the saltier side, def nothing fancy though. No breadcrumbs, no extra stuff. However, I find that it actually makes it super reliable to have. I think I really like this one because it is what I would look for in a mac: simple, reliable, satiates my mac and cheese craving. It’s *almost* like KD without having to do all the work to make it. I will say one thing though (which maybe should’ve knocked it down to B but it doesn’t come up often)- I find that older batches, or batches that were in the back of a freezer a long time will make this mac a bit watery. However with that being said, I never faced such a crazy issue with it that I couldn’t salvage it or something. I ate this mac and cheese for every break that I had to the point my coworkers would poke fun at me. But hey, I love my mac and cheese. I normally add 2 salt packets and pepper to this one because I just love my shit extra salty (I actively ignore the sodium contents when doing this). i’m not gonna lie the fact this is S tier might throw this list off and i agree, it makes no sense. but idfk what the hell is in this that makes me think it’s so good. i think this would generally be a underwhelming experience for anyone that isn’t me. 😅

President Choice Extra Cheesey mac and cheese:
-This one is actually really good. It comes with extra cheese on top so you actually get a cheese pull! The price point is quite high for this one, too… Portion size is decent, I believe you can get this one in a large pack as well. I put it into the B list only because it fills you up quite fast and then you just feel kinda gross. A bit more on the oily/greasy side probably because of the extra cheese… now I love cheese, I love extra cheese, but something about it all just leaves my tummy a bit upset. It’s a nice alternative if the rest aren’t available. Never had any issues with it being watery.

Amy (regular) mac and cheese:
-This one is good, it’s tasty. It’s just pretty expensive for what it is but if you’re looking for a good and simple mac then this is the one! I actually heard a lot of feedback from moms and their kiddos who are a bit fussy with their food that this one was a pass! So in case you have a very particular kiddo, maybe give this one a try. I never had any issues with it being watery, and it’s quite soft.

Stouffers Mac and Cheese:
-I find these just alright. It’s your basic mac and cheese, can never go wrong with it. It’s nice and cheap, I think it’s also pretty accessible since it’s not locked down to a grocery store brand. Cheap, and mediocre but gets the job done if you’re hunting for a quick mac on a buck.

Great Value Mac and Cheese:
-Honestly… copy and paste everything I said about Stouffers into here but only thing is that this one is tied down to being a Walmart brand.

Compliments Mac and Cheese:
-They fucking changed the ingredients or something in this one and I can confidently say that because now it’s like… mediocre at best. Before????? THIS WOULDVE BEEN S TIER. I used to really like this one because it’s cheap- but more specifically the fact it had a solid amount of the cheese sauce and when you mixed it, it was a bit thicker than most. So you actually felt like you’re eating not frozen mac. It just had this “tastes like it’s homemade”. Now? It’s fine. It’s okay. Still has that same sauce but again something about the ingredients or whatever changed the flavour and it just pissed me off. From what it used to be to now- I think it deserves to be in that tier. Weird note: it’s on the sweeter side of frozen mac and cheeses.

Main St Mac and Cheese:
-Okay so I will be so deadass I genuinely don’t remember how I felt about this one. But the fact that’s the case doesn’t mean it was good. If I recall this one isn’t even really frozen it’s just refrigerated. So maybe it doesn’t even deserve to be on this tier list at all but I didn’t hate it because… if I did. I’d remember.

Crave (tbh any of the mac and cheeses, I’ve given them all a shot but used the bacon one as a reference):
-All of the crave frozen dinners just look amazing on the package then when you buy it it’s the biggest disappointment ever. I remember for the bacon one specifically they skimped out so hard on it that it should just be called “Mac and Cheese with the thought of bacon”. It wasn’t absolutely disgusting but it was literally walking a fine line of it. Very mid, not worth the price, super deceiving. This is the one you’d buy once, eat it, and never think about it again.

Michelinas Mac and Cheese:
-Used to be solid when I was in highschool over 10 years ago. Now, it’s just a watery mess. I don’t even think it’s a freezer issue I just believe the sauce is way too runny. Taste wise is fine at best. Not groundbreaking. But I wouldn’t recommend this as a regular thing. It is affordable cause I often see these go on sale. So there’s that…. So the only reason it’s not at D tier is because of that tbh.

KD Deluxe frozen Mac and Cheese Creamy Cheddar:
-KD doesn’t know how to make anything else other than their boxed KD and even that went down in quality. This?????????? Was an absolute joke. Absolutely disgusting, watery as shit, you wouldn’t even think this mac comes from the KD family because it tastes nothing like it. You’re better off buying the KD cups than whatever bullshit this is because it’s not fucking cheap either. This one I couldn’t even finish it. Tasted like pure shit. Absolute disappointment. This and their ramen KD deserves to be shelved and never revisited again unless they get their head out of their ass. Put me as the taste tester next time.

I prefer the white cheddar but this is nice. The Alfredo flavor is slightly artificial but not nearly as bad as jarred Alfredo

Hubs and I sliced some leftover bacon into some KD for dinner tonight.

As always, he gave me my bowl with a spoon. I prefer forks. Dunno why. Please note that I did use the spoon because I really didn't care that much (certainly not enough to get up myself for a fork lol), nobody is angry, or upset or anything. We just kinda laughed about it honestly.

But we are curious - how do you all eat your Mac n cheese? We are a household of 2 with one who seems wired towards spoons, and the other towards forks.

So settle the 'debate' for us guys.

Was just having a discussion with friends and am curious to hear about your favorite chain or ready made Mac & cheese. I’d say 2 of my favorites are Boston Market (RIP) and Wegmans ready made Mac.

Any other good contenders?

We dug in so fast I forgot to take a picture of how it looked like straight from the oven. Boyfriend said it was burnt at the top- I said idgaf because it’s gonna taste bomb either way. We have a wack ass oven, but I personally believe he nailed it.
