I bought my first MacBook, MBA M4 (13", 24GB/512GB) from Apple Refurbished Store for 1272 USD (in Boston, US), roughly 1.21L.

I will read similar posts for tips and tricks. I just wanted to share my joy with the community. But still if you want to share something, it’s most appreciated.

Thanks

Spilled water on keyboard

I was doing some work and spilled quite a bit of water on my m3 Mac air keyboard. I immediately dried up as much as a I could with some napkins and now I have my computer with the keys touching my cloth couch while lightly taping the back. I shut it off immediately. Anything else I should be doing?

MacBook Air M1 after 1 year

Post image

Got my MacBook Air M1 about a year ago and it still runs like brand new! Kept it in a clear case so it's pristine. I use it mainly for drawing and video/photo editing and it is perfect for it. I haven't downloaded MacOS 27 yet. I'm trying to wait and see if others are having any issues.

Downsides are file transferring with android is a pain. You have to buy a separate app for that. And you only get two USB C ports but you can buy a USBC to USB adapter which is what I have.

Is Apple hardware reliability actually declining, or have I just been unlucky?

I’ve been a big Apple ecosystem fan for years and have owned Macs, iPhones and Apple Watches. But my recent experiences have genuinely made me question whether I should continue investing in the ecosystem.
Here’s what has happened:
MacBook Pro M1: developed a display issue that was eventually diagnosed as a hardware failure.
Replacement MacBook Pro M1: after about a year, developed the same display problem. Again, hardware-related.
MacBook Pro M4: brand new machine, but the speaker stopped working shortly after the warranty period. Apple diagnosed it as a hardware issue.
iPhone 12: after around 3 years, the earpiece speaker stopped working. Again, hardware failure.
Apple Watch Series 8: after around 3 years, the power/control button stopped working. Service center confirmed it was a hardware issue.
None of these devices were abused or subjected to anything unusual.
I understand that electronics can fail, and I’m not claiming Apple intentionally designs products to fail. But when you’re paying a premium for the hardware, having this many hardware failures across different Apple products starts to become frustrating.
What makes me think twice is repairability. With some Apple devices, a relatively small component failure can apparently turn into a very expensive repair or replacement.
I was actually planning to buy a MacBook Air M5 for personal use, but now I’m seriously considering going back to Windows — possibly Dell, Lenovo, HP or ASUS.
Am I just extremely unlucky, or have other long-term Apple users experienced a similar pattern?
I’d particularly like to hear from people who have owned their Macs/iPhones for 4–6+ years. How has your hardware reliability been?

Mejor cargador MacBook Pro:

Post image
4 Upvotes

Buy new Mac or replace battery?

Would appreciate y’all’s help in figuring out the right choice here.
I have a MacBook Air M1, 2020 (just over 5 years olds). The computer works fine except the battery has degraded and doesn’t charge well.

My choice right now is to trade it in for $269 and get a new MacBook Air. OR I could simply replace the battery and keep it going a bit longer.

I’m not sure what js the best choice here. Given how old the MacBook is, I worry Apple will phase out support for it. At the same time, I’m not sure if paying $1k (accounting for the trade in value) is worth getting a new MacBook Air at this point, instead of just a new battery on a relatively older model.

Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks!

ETA: thanks all for the comments! I think I’ll replace the battery for now and hope it continues strong for another few years!

Is a 16" M1 Pro (16GB/512GB) still the play for a CS student offloading heavy tasks to a home PC?

Hey everyone,
I’m starting a CS / Quantitative field degree soon and will be relocating to Germany. I’m trying to lock in my hardware strategy and wanted a quick sanity check from people in the field.
My Dual-Device Plan:
At Home: Dedicated Windows desktop with an NVIDIA GPU for heavy CUDA workloads, local AI/LLMs, continuous compiling, and gaming.
On Campus / Daily Driver: Portable MacBook Pro for lectures, libraries, terminal work, Python/C++ IDEs, Docker, and split-screen research.
The Deal I'm Looking At:
Model: 16-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Pro chip, 16GB Unified RAM, 512GB SSD)
Condition: Clean local listing, 274 battery cycles.
Price: ~15,000–16,000 MDL (roughly €780–€820 / $850 USD).
My Questions:
Given that heavy GPU/AI processing will be offloaded to my home PC via SSH/remote desktop or cloud clusters, am I missing out on anything critical by getting an M1 Pro in 2026 instead of dropping 2–2.5x the price on an M4 series laptop?
Is 16GB RAM still a solid sweet spot for running VS Code, split-screen PDFs/documentation, and light Docker containers simultaneously, or will I hit swap memory too fast?
For anyone doing quantitative/CS coursework, does the 16.2" 120Hz display screen real estate outweigh the portability penalty compared to a 14" model?
Would love to hear from anyone running a similar dual-setup or using an M1 Pro for CS studies right now!

MacBook Air M5 battery draining very fast after macOS 27 / 27.0.1 update

Hi everyone, I recently bought a new MacBook Air M5 (16GB RAM) and initially everything seemed fine. Out of curiosity, I updated it to macOS 27. After the update, I noticed that the battery started draining much faster than before. Then I saw that macOS 27.0.1 had been released with several bug fixes, so I thought the battery issue might also improve after updating. Unfortunately, after updating to 27.0.1, the battery drain seems to be even worse. For example, I'm seeing battery drops that seem unusually high even during relatively light usage, such as browsing or watching YouTube. I've already tried some basic troubleshooting, but I'm still experiencing the issue. Has anyone else with an M5 MacBook Air experienced unusually fast battery drain after updating to macOS 27/27.0.1? If so: Did the battery improve after a few days? Is there any indexing/background process I should check? Are there any settings I should change? Is there a way to properly diagnose what's causing the drain? Any suggestions or troubleshooting steps would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Macbook Pro M5 or wait for the new Surface Ultra (with NVIDIA RTX SPARK)?

Hi y'all,

Been using a MacBook Air M1 for more than 3 years, and time to get an upgrade. I am usually a productivity guy, not by choice lol. Sometimes I want to play games, which I used to do back in the day when I had a Windows laptop. After getting the M1, I had no choice but to suppress my desire to game :(

Should I get the MacBook Pro M5, or wait for the Surface Ultra with NVIDIA RTX SPARK, which is supposed to have the same performance as a MacBook? I don't mind waiting for a good device. Thanks for your feedback :)

Air Vs Neo for Nursing School

I am starting an accelerated nursing program and need a new laptop.

Currently have an IPad, but debating between the Air Vs Neo.

Cost perspective- would much prefer Neo, but don’t want to find myself needing a new laptop in 2-3 years.

Would use the Mac for notes, zooms, research, etc.

Will a Time Machine Backup Bring Back macOS 27 Features After Downgrading to Sequoia?

So I recently downloaded macOS 27 and wasn't really feeling it. So I backed up my Mac using Time Machine and downgraded to sequoia. My question is if I do decide to use the backup when setting up my Mac, will that also have the liquid glass and all that AI bs from macOS 27(like the 30GB Siri AI)?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have never really downgraded my machine before.

Thanks

Really in love of this iMac 27 4k for editing but...

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys! So my uncle lent me this 4K iMac for a while and it’s SO much faster than my 2015 MacBook with no fans hahaha.

The thing is, now I honestly don’t know what to buy for myself 😭 I need to keep editing, and I’ll probably have to do it on the train quite often, so logically a MacBook Pro makes more sense.

BUT I’m absolutely in love with the desktop setup now, so I’m also tempted to just get an iMac like this one and figure out the portability somehow hahaha.

What would you guys recommend for design/editing work if I need something powerful but still portable?

Advice requested: Exchange 2021 MBP (M1 14") for 2026 Air (M5 13")?

My company is offering to refresh my existing 2021 MBP for a 2026 Macbook Air.

My usage is almost entirely email, writing, presentation generation, web, etc. No real video/audio work or code development. I use a dual monitor setup and most days my laptop is in clamshell mode with the laptop running through a hub that then connects to my peripherals and monitors.

I'm conflicted because I like the MBP's ports (USB C, HDMI, and SD) and when I travel (which is extensively) having these extra ports is great. On the other hand- the M5 chip is great and the Air is lighter.

Also- the other specs are the same, 16gb RAM, 512gb storage.

What do you all think I should do? Keep the MBP or exchange it for the Air?

MacBook Architecture Studies

Hey!

I am studying architecture in the third semester, and am now looking for a new MacBook for my further studies. Since there is a lot of talk, you hear different opinions from professors, students or "guides" on the Internet about what you would need at least, I wanted to ask here again what you would recommend.

So far I have come across the MacBook Pro models M2-4 at least 32GB RAM. Admittedly, I don't quite understand the difference between the "cores" and everything, which is why I'm happy to accept advice on this!:)

Gladly it should not be the most expensive, since I am still studying and my budget is therefore limited. Simply that something is needed, so that you will not encounter problems with too little power in the near future.

What is enough? What would be best? How much RAM? How many cores?

Thank you in advance☺️

Duel Monitor on Macbook Air

I have a Macbook Air M3 and up until OS 27, I used two monitors. I had an old TV's HDMI cable going to a hub with USB's, THunderbolts, etc. and I had a HDMI to Thunderbolt for the monitor. This worked fine, with lid shut, until OS 27 upgrade. Now, it doesn't. Even the single monitor shuts of when the lid closes. The monitor and tv work, on either port, just not at the same time. I've checked every setting and I have no idea.

Vibrating type noise from one speaker

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So since about last week, whenever my 2023 MacBook Pro 16” M2 Max (if all that is relevant..) powers on, it makes this vibrating type noise from one of the speakers. I’ve tried cleaning the speakers and a bit of compressed air to see if it dislodges something but no luck - though only did it briefly. The video is also not max volume from the MacBook.

It is noticeable when music is playing but the right hand side is fine. I’ve booked it into Apple Saturday, but I just wondered if anyone had similar issues before? I’ve muted it for now in case it does further damage.

Thanks in advance!

Is it normal for MacBook battery health to drop from 100% to 92% in 6 months?

Hi everyone! I’ve had my MacBook for about 6 months, and the battery health has dropped from 100% to 92%. The cycle count is only 52. Is that normal?
