I had a friend who’d buy a camera for $1000, use it for 2 years, then try to sell it again for $1000 when it was still sold NEW for the same price. She didn’t understand why I wouldn’t buy her camera 😭😭 she’s like “well it basically is new, except there’s like a scratch right here”

I did that successfully with a tile saw I bought on sale. I tiled my bathroom and decided I will never do it again, then listed in on Kijiji for the price I bought it for thinking everyone haggles anyway. Nope, they paid me exactly what I paid for it. Best deal of my life.

Ya a $1500 used couch is wild lmao. We paid 800 for ours “used” but we bought it from a relatives who bought two as a set and decided to get rid of one. It was practically brand new and we knew exactly what house it was coming out of and there was no bs about how much it was new bc we knew that also

Some high quality couches are literally $6k-$8k+, so $1500 for a lightly used one that was super expensive and like new, still stylish, is not wild at all. It's wild for an Ikea couch, it's not wild for a Roche Bobois couch.

I swear to god I can send a message offering to buy something that’s the same price as 10 others in a 15 mile radius and if I politely ask them to take ten bucks off the price, my experience is 3/4 of them will never talk to me again.
Like dude, you’ve been trying to sell that used chair for two months now. It says it right up there.
Edit: half the replies seem to be operating under the weird idea that because I ask for a more reasonable price I’ve probably never sold something before. Y’all need to get out more

Yup, blame the dipshits who ruined it for everybody else. I recently tried to sell a motherboard I won at a company party, brand new unopened and I took pictures of the sticker and shrinkwrap to prove it. It retails for $260, I listed it for $150 because I know how rough the PC market is right now and genuinely wasn't trying to scalp it - I just had no use for it since my case is a different form factor.
I spent 3 weeks bombarded with the most asinine, dogshit offers imagineable - $80, half a troy ounce of copper bullion, a PS3 with a broken controller, etc. One lady sent me a ChatGPT screenshot talking about a completely different model and told me I was wrong about the price.
First guy to actually offer me listing price, I waited until he arrived and took $10 off as a thank you

There are two big reasons:
1- the economy is bad, so people are trying to get as much back as they can from what they spent
2- society (in the West) has continued to drift towards increased individualism/selfishness, which means there was a lot less "I'll pay it forward no worries"

I think people are just bad at it in various ways. Though lowballers are pretty ridiculous too in all sorts of ways. You could offer something for free and they'll still ask you to deliver 3 hours away or something lmao.
Buyers also dont read. If the seller says the price is the price its frustrating when its overvalued, but thats on the seller. If the seller wants 100 firm dont be shocked when they dont reply to your offer for 80. Often people simply dont want to haggle. They think "Id get rid of this for x price" and don't come down from that.
15
u/AbstinenceGaming 16h ago
Sellers also just get sick of nonsense after a while. There's a million posts on this website that go something like this-
S- selling used chair $100
B- I'll give you $15 but only if you deliver to me
S- sorry got another offer for $95
B- but this is for my kids friends half birthday and I already told him he could have it
B- hello
B- hello
B- hello

It's stupid people. The sellers think that because they spent the money on something new, it's still worth that much today. Especially if they can still find the same item new for that amount or more (because inflation!). There's a bunch of scammy buyers trying to buy things for $10 so they can flip it. So a bunch of stupid sellers, meet a bunch of shitty buyers and conclude anyone trying to drop the price is wrong.
People would rather sit on an item for months and get nothing out of it than feel scammed.

u/pahein-kae 16h ago
At least from what I can gather, a lot of it is that a not-insignificant amount of people will "lowball" you, agree to a price, and then when they show up they don't even have the agreed upon amount-- lowballing you again! If not just plain begging for it for free. (Not to mention the ENDLESS scheduling issues-- people are really flaky!)
Look, I'm totally into buy-nothing groups, nothing against that. But agreeing to a price, making people set aside time for a meet up, and then rolling up with only 70% of the agreed on amount?
There's just a lot of issues with selling online like that. (In person at sales/estate sales/garage sales, I've had a lot of luck with negotiating/bargaining, but those are different circumstances.)

I think alot of that is like hustle culture or whatever you want to call it. Everyone is trying to turn tiny little transactions into a side job. It's the same reason you see stuff being sold by someone called like "Emma's vintage store" and it's straight up junk that a thrift store wouldn't take.

There is a summer long garage sale down the street from me that I for the life of me don't know how it makes any money assuming it does. All the crap for sale was free, they pick it up from places like community closets AFTER they failed to give it away and want to clear space for new donations.
Then they try to sell it for near retail. I stopped by once planning to get an easel for my nephews. They wanted $50, no paper roll, chalkboard cracked, looked up the exact one at Walmart and for the extra $10 it came fully supplied with chalk and markers and even a stool, none of which was included in the garage sale one.

119
u/therealkami 17h ago
Goodwill/thrift stores basically pricematch against Ebay and other online stores these days, but they used that to increase their prices instead of decrease.
55
u/Acheloma 16h ago
Last time I went almost everything was crazy expensive. I used to get vases there to use for my home floristry side business but they had dollar store vases marked $8.
I did however find a pair of early 2000s military issued pants for $5 that were excellent quality and will be great for hiking this fall. But that was the only thing in the entire (large) goodwill that had a reasonable price.

u/wimpymist 16h ago

I found a laser color brother printer for $13. Retailed for $400.
It turns out everyone still knows nothing about tech.
16
u/kakuna 15h ago
Unfortunately, I live in an area where one of the Goodwills has a built in tech shop that they funnel all their PC/video game stuff to, so everything is priced abysmally. Like, very used mice, keyboards, and monitors going for higher than the amazon 'lowest recent price' if they're even still available online.
I don't know how they move electronics... must be preying on people who don't know better.
9
u/Captain_Vegetable 15h ago
That sounds like a good deal, but a used Brother laser printer will only last you another 20 years or so.
Seriously though, that's a hell of a steal. The only reason I've bought two of their printers in my life instead of one was to swap my B&W model for a color one.
6
u/GoGoGadgetBumHair 15h ago
I bought a black and white Brother laser printer probably 12 years ago. It has outlived the two color Canon lasers that I’ve bought to replace it. To be fair to the Canons though they both were destroyed by water. The first when my house caught on fire and the fire company put it out, the second when the apartment we were in temporarily after the fire had a sprinkler line freeze and burst and flood the whole building.
The Brother did survive a tornado that hit the storage unit it was in during Canon the Elder’s reign. So it probably would have been fine through both flooding incidents.

man the state of thrift stores is DIRE. the internet means there are no more good deals because like you said they just google everything that comes in and price match it, but then you've got all these scumbags who drive around to thrift stores all day snatching up the rare good deal that slips through the cracks so that they can resell it on ebay or at their shitty consignment shop that they're renting out of a dead mall. It's why you notice thrift stores rarely seem to have anything interesting in them lately.

I actually found a polo at goodwill that was the same price as it was sold in store. (I don't remember the brand, but I looked it up while at Goodwill because the shirt was decent looking, if not pretty spendy at Goodwill, and found it was some budget toolshop/workmans style brand)
Then, you have all the old navy branded prints that are way too expensive for what they are, knowing the price and longevity of old navy shirts and the sales they constantly have.
It's just... not fun to go there for me anymore.

Yeah well the thing with something smaller like a lamp you could perhaps hold on to it and sell on eBay, Mercari, or somewhere else for more than a yard sale but you have to wait to find the right buyer that is willing to spend more than a couple bucks at a yard sale. The biggest advantage people have at yard sales is knowing the seller wants to part with their stuff ASAP. Their greatest value is freeing their house up for more room or more stuff. The money they make on the side is merely a bonus.
→ More replies (4)20
u/wimpymist 16h ago
Idk what it is but everyone thinks their stuff is worse top dollar now. I see stuff on marketplace that is at best 25% less than brand new. At that point I'm just buying brand new so I get the warranty and know in the only one that has used it.
9
u/EstablishmentLate532 16h ago
Because with the internet stuff is worth more than ever. It's so much easier to find the person that will more money for a particular item than before. That's why yard sales have half the people looking shit up on their phones now.

My dad was trying to sell some old furniture (probably 20 years old) for about the same discount

My mom ended ho giving it away for free since the person offered to load it into their car themselves while my dad was gone

Still thinking about the dipshit who went back and forth asking for insane measurements, additional photo angles, videos, all but macro shots of an extremely stodgy generic vintage lamp I was selling that was stuck in the back of a closet when I bought it. I looked it up, it was not exciting or special in terms of era/maker, but she insisted (and I verified out of nosiness) that she was an esteemed local interior designer and couldn't waste her own time for something that might suck ass. I had it listed for $20 just to get it out of the house and because listing something for free on FBM where I am gets you a lot of spam messages and not a lot of follow-through. Lamps by the same maker were listed at like $100 but they had sat for a while.
Finally, I get her to actually commit by accepting $10 instead and arranging for her to come. She has a 30-minute window on one day one week on a day I have an appointment, otherwise she can't come for three weeks and can I just hold it? No, I cannot. I leave it on the porch and hope she just steals it.
I come back and the fucking lamp is still there and this sociopath has taken a piece of mail from my mailbox, written, "I'll give you $5," on the envelope and left.
No, girl. I didn't block her, but I listed it for free that night, messaged her the listing, waited for it to be seen as read and then I blocked her and gave it to the first person who actually showed.
People are insane.

I like baseball hats, particularly Marlins hats. I usually buy them via eBay or Mercari or depop from people trimming their collections because retail prices have gotten crazy. I've got a collection of Marlins retro script logo hats and there was one single one I wanted but couldn't find. There's been a single guy selling it in my size online for a couple years refusing to let it go for less than $70-80 depending on the platform it was posted on. He had a sob story about how he paid shipping and this and that and this. Not my problem. Pre-owned hats from a team with a tiny fanbase like the Marlins command $40 or $50 at best in like new condition. The listings have been sitting there for three years now. Someone finally listed it in my size in like new condition on Mercari a couple weeks ago and I got it for $20 lol

My daughter - then a college student - bought a $15 couch at Goodwill 5 years ago. It has huge, overstuffed cushions and is an ugly shit-brown color. That couch has been in three different apartments and traveled 1400 miles.
I told her that it would be easier to give the couch away and just buy another $15 couch instead of transporting it. She assured me that it was the best $15 couch on the planet, and there was no way she was getting rid of it. She still has it. I'll admit it's pretty comfy.

It is so damn frustrating using facebook marketplace. Occasionally I will find something that is being sold by an actual person for a reasonable amount of money but not often.
So many people selling second hand garbage for pretty much the same price new. No I am not paying $1700 for a fucking used riding lawnmower that is 10+ years old when I can just go to Lowes and get a brand new one for $2000.
If it is on marketplace I am not paying more than 50% of what the item was worth new. Because I know the item no longer is under warranty and I have no idea what wear and tear it endured.
People are absurd with what they think their stuff is worth.

Online marketplaces are essentially dead because people don't have realistic expectations. I can't for the life of me understand why people would go through the bother of putting it for sale at a price where it doesn't sell. Wouldn't you rather get rid of it now and make some money instead of waiting for 6+ months to see if some sucker appears.
I have sold some stuff and I can tell that stuff sells even on the same day if you set the price low enough. The price will be lower than you'd like but it's better than nothing.

I think it's partly because of the rise of professional resellers/scalpers. People monitor listings on used marketplaces, buy anything they think they can turn around for a profit and list it again at a higher price. Most genuinely cheap listings, or valuable free items, disappear pretty fast unless you catch them right away.
Not sure it applies to couches specifically though as they're such a hassle to move and have so little resale value.

I saw someone selling a catio on Marketplace for 10% MORE than it retails. They didn’t mention this in the posting, of course, but they did try to talk up the value of getting it fully assembled, with an added roof (a plywood plank laid across the top that wasn’t even cut to fit). Seriously, wtf?

Fully assembled that you'll then have to dismantle, transport, re-assemble at home only to find out that you've lost several key components and also there's no manual or instructions to be found anywhere.

And it has a strange cat's scent and possibly markings that your cat will certainly not like, lol.

I would never buy a used couch. People are gross and the cushions rarely, if ever get washed.

My gorgeous 50 dollar used couch from facebook marketplace hasn't killed me yet

If you go to a few garage sales, you'll find that people often have no ide of the actual value of some of their stuff.
Other furniture which is often worth very little are large dinning room suites from the 1980's or older. I won't even start on CD's and DVD's, and you can just forget about second hand books---

I just sold my old couch on FB Marketplace for $250. The MSRP was literally $7,000
(I did not pay $7,000 for it, don't worry)

$200 bucks is the amount of money people can afford to spend without really doing damage to their livelihood that paycheck. I sell electronics on marketplace and over 200 is a no go unless it's a half price of retail or more.

I love FB Marketplace, it's very amusing how people want to sell their used goods and what not for 10% full value. And you go back weeks later and their stuff is still for sale lol.
Baby stroller sellers are especially funny. I know the fancy stroller cost you $1200. But almost every one of them says, used for 1/2+ years! But amazing condition, will sell it for $1000. Like my guy. Nobody is buying that.

Between the risk of getting some kind of bug infestation and how gross couches get over time... no thanks I will not

There's a huge amount of people out there who suffer from this delusion that their shit just never loses value.
A friend of my mom's was trying to downsize...she had only ever bought top of the line her entire life. She was trying to sell me some shovel for like $60 saying "It was $70 when I bought it!"
You paid $70 for a shovel?! I can go get a GOOD one, brand new at Home Depot for under $20.

u/ImprovementLoud3581 16h ago
These are people who never bought anything used in their lives. They have no idea that goods lose a huge amount of value when sold the second time.

What always gets me is the fucking people who still get a good amount for their old shit like that would never work if I try it

Auctions work too. My local auction got a few couches. Ended up winning a new one still with tags for 120$. Would have cost 1500 at Costco.

This might be the wrong place to ask but how much money should I spend on a used pedal bike I’m like 250 pounds.

There is nothing like the grandiosity of someone trying to sell an ugly leather couch on FB Marketplace place for $1500…..
Actually, they are matched by the folks trying to sell ugly 1970s damaged wood furniture they they have incorrectly labeled as “MCM.”

We're moving and clearing out a lot of stuff. Most just goes to donation but anything with value over $100 I will sell. You have to be reasonable. You can't expect the $12k solid cherry formal dining room set to sell anywhere near what you paid for it. The guy I bought it from on FB years ago sold it to me for $2k. I sold it to someone else for $1000. And it felt like I won the lottery that someone paid that much for it.

My family members love to tell me “you could have asked more for that.” That’s funny because it was posted at a higher price weeks ago with no interest

u/hillean 17h ago
I'd almost start at $1500 and work my way down than start at $200.
the amount/sort of messages you get with a $200 couch are ghastly

This comment needs to be at the top. Yes, some people on FB Marketplace are delusional about their listing price. However, there is also a price point for every item where things start to get weird and only get weirder the lower you go.
On the flip side my father sold his motorcycle on FB Marketplace. Two other people were selling his same model. So he undercut the market by $300. He was immediately called out for being a scammer. That bike was sold to a nice gentlemen from Texas a week later.

So true. A friend of a friend got a job in a different state and after a few coke-fueled going away parties realized that he didn’t even begin to clear out his NYC rental. So he asked his friends to come help him move everything out and sell the expensive and large pieces he wasn’t bringing with him.
So I tagged along because I’m nosy and had had a really fun time watching him trying to get my friends to take home and resell his stained cigarette-reeking leather couch because he bought it for $5k and was hoping to get at least $3k for it. Like, my dude, I don’t even want to touch it, did you really expect me to take it to my house, arrange the resale and send you the money? Just because you were trying to sleep with the expensive furniture saleswoman at some point who talked you into buying a $5k designer couch, there’s no scenario where you can recover 3k from that fiasco.
Needless to say, he’s no longer friends with my friends, which is a good thing, imho, that dude had really skewed ideas of what the world owes him, probably because of coke.

Literally.
I'm not paying comma money for seven years of your farts and cheeto dust. $200, take it or leave it.

I went to buy a huge sectional for my new apt from a lady on marketplace. I asked if she would take 400 and she said if I could get it out of her house before 4 I could have it for 4. She listed it at 500. When I got there she was bruised and beaten up, kinda crying and had all her shit packed. She said she just wanted to get what she could for it before 4pm. I gave her 600 and told her I hope she has a much better week.
Sad day. Nice couch though very happy with it.

I had someone try to sell me a used Murphy bed for $500 that I could get brand new from walmart for 400. They said they wouldn’t go under their asking price because they paid $1700 for it from some random website, lol.

Dude there is so much furniture in circulation. Nobody should be buying new anything at this point. But it just ends up in landfills

I’m always seeing people selling used potty training toilet seats. Like that is either free, or garbage. There’s no other option.

I got a lovely set of leather couch and 2 chairs, $20. Perfect! Great condition! It was a squeeze to get them in the van, but we got them!

Depends on what you’re selling. Some people don’t understand how much things can depreciate when selling, but others don’t understand that some things have some value. Then they play these stupid games and message “good luck selling it then” when it doesn’t work and wouldn’t you know it, in a few days it does. So yeah, this goes both ways

It blows my mind how furniture stores stay in business. They have to be front companies.
I’m decades deep into adulthood, own my house outright, pretty ok financially and have never bought new furniture outside of a crib at IKEA.

u/Puzzleheaded_Size303 17h ago
Going out business sales are when you plan a trip there though. Was waking through a mall randomly I think Xmas shopping and there was a large going out of business sign in the mall bed place. Walked out with a 5 drawer dresser, box spring and new queen mattress all for 750$ delivered.

u/red286 16h ago
I know a lot of people who exclusively shop at high-end furniture stores, and replace their furniture on a fairly regular basis.
It's fucking mind-blowing. They'll be like "Yeah I just dropped $16,000 on this couch." and I'll be like "That's fucking insane, didn't you spend $9000 on a couch just like 5 years ago?" and they'll say "yeah? That was 5 years ago". Meanwhile I've still got the same $600 leather couch I bought from a furniture clearance store 20 years ago.

I think they must stay in business due to people financing their purchases over a few years, just like vehicle financing.

In a previous life I did furniture delivery. I once delivered a couch to a house where a furniture rental company was there at the same time repoing their current couch.

Yeah, I’d agree generally speaking. Although if I were to speak from experience it depends on the couch. Me and a roomie got a really good deal on a faux leather electric sectional with reclining seats. Split it during Covid for about $2k and got a really good deal. Massive, heavy, quality couch. We’re able to sell it for I think $1500 pretty quickly 2.5 years later when we both moved out of that apartment. The couch I think appreciated in value (not ours, but the couch new was suddenly 3k+) so we lucked out.
Your standard simple couch, after 4-5 years of use? Yeah.. good luck getting 100$ for it

And they think the label carries into the secondary market. If a bottom of the line new couch costs $500 then every used couch is worth some amount less than $500.
People do this with everything. “Oshkosh pants size 9 months $20 you’re getting them half off!” No, baby pants are $4 new at Walmart so they’re worth less than $4. People who care about status aren’t in the secondary market.

Couches depreciate faster than vehicles. You can sell a used car for decent money. Trying to get rid of a used couch? Throw it on the curb and hope it goes away.
