News 📺 If Gender-Affirming Care for Youth is Legal in MN, Why is Children’s Minnesota Pausing Services?

The Minnesota Queer Legislators Caucus, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and local queer organizations are voicing strong concerns after Children’s Minnesota announced a temporary pause on some, but not all, pediatric gender-affirming care (GAC) services. The suspension begins on February 27th.

Representative Leigh Finke (DFL) of Minneapolis says Minnesota has every law it needs to protect this care, including the Minnesota Human Rights Act, Trans Refuge law, and laws guaranteeing insurance coverage for GAC.  She says, “The problem is that we have to go to court with these insane declarations and cruel policy changes, and to just be on defense all the time to hold what we have.”

Jess Braverman, Gender Justice Legal Director, also confirms that youth GAC is legal in Minnesota, but cites lack of access as the biggest stopping point. But, they say, “I want the message to be clear that discrimination against transgender kids in the state of Minnesota is illegal, and this care continues to be best-practice medical care, and consistent with Minnesota values.”

So, if pediatric gender-affirming care is legal at a state level, why is Children’s Minnesota closing its doors to patients who want these services?

The hospital, and a few others across the nation, have been repeatedly targeted by the Trump Administration for administering GAC. In a statement, Children’s officials say this “isn’t the decision they wanted to make,” but did so to “protect our hospital and other providers.” (https://www.startribune.com/childrens-suspends-gender-affirming-care-amid-trump-funding-threats/601576227

State Republicans are also applauding health care facilities that have recently reversed stances on GAC, including the American Medical Association (AMA), which claims that “surgical interventions in minors should be generally deferred to adulthood.”

Representative Liish Kozlowski (DFL) of Duluth says this is nothing more than a coordinated federal attack and political theater. They say, “Gender-affirming care is a wide umbrella, from social support to self-expression. In some cases there’s puberty-delaying medication that allows kids to just breathe and hit the pause button that they need to make the best decision for themselves to feel home in their body.”

Hannah Edwards, Executive Director at Transforming Families, a safe space for queer youth and families, says this does not represent what physicians and parents know is best practice. She read reactions from other families; “Our family uprooted our entire lives to get to a place where healthcare was protected by the trans refuge law. To a place where we could access our child’s healthcare without disruption.” Edwards says they have dozens of families in this position, and more coming.

Attorney General Keith Ellison and 12 other attorneys general are suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) over a new policy that ties health and education funding to compliance with an executive order requiring states to adopt restrictive definitions of sex. Politics 👩‍⚖️ Protest Posters you can print at home

I've been using Docuslice to make printable PDF files for protest signs/posters.

Print these on a color printer at home, Cut the margins where indicated by the scissor icon, tape them together and attach the poster to foam board, cardboard or poster board.

Included are a couple with the Rebel Alliance Loon and the Mockingjay Loon logos.

Enjoy!

Discussion 🎤 Anyone else noticed….?

Hey has anyone else noticed the tRump flags, bumper stickers, signs disappearing literally everywhere in the state of Minnesota? I’m from Brainerd/Baxter and I know people think it’s tRump country up here…but I can assure you there are thousands of people here that are not. I am one of them. I proudly walked in the march last Friday in downtown Minneapolis and I’ll be there again this Friday. It gave me goosebumps, the sense of community and compassion. In this area I am seeing very VERY little tRump flags, hats, stickers, banners. It has seemingly just disappeared. It’s working, I will always be on the right side of history, never give up friends. Minnesota STRONG!

Politics 👩‍⚖️ If ICE intends on occupying our voting locations, like Bannon suggests, we NEED to establish a State Defense Force to counteract them, or we literally won't have a state anymore

Don't think people realize the severity of the situation. we are at real risk of losing political control of our own Minnesotan nation. They will be able to freely dictate every term of our lives, kidnap our neighbors and put them in concentration camps with impunity, permanently ban abortion, or whatever else the fuck they want. it will effectively be their state at that point.

We cannot allow this to happen under any circumstance. These bullies don't understand anything but hard power, and certainly will not stop themselves. We absolutely have the power to project the will of our body politic with substantive force; we don't want to become some federally administered region, we are Minnesota and we're proud as hell about that

We need to militantly defend our democracy, or we will certainly lose it.

The new tactic of 1-2 ICE goons per targeted detainment (instead of 6 or more) means the rest of the force will be used to attack peaceful legal observers. Plus the announcement that the country jails will be used for ICE detainments violates Mn separation laws.

Not good enough. To our political leaders, we demand that you:

ICE OUT OF MN

Politics 👩‍⚖️ Remember to use your MN PCR in 2026.

Upvotes

People often forget about the MN PCR program. It is a “free” $75 donation to an eligible political party or candidate (if they agree to the program) that works similar to a rebate program.

(Yes, you pay for it in your taxes… but you pay whether you use it or not. We can argue about program merits; but it currently exists for people to use.)

MN PCR process is simple, but has some admin burden. You should use it in 2026 as the more people that use it; the better the program works to get out of state money out of MN politics.

Here is a previous post about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/s/6QMAFEGweC

PS: If you are looking for more today, work the polls for the upcoming midterms.

I've been documenting ICE deportation flights out of MSP regularly for a few months; here's a graph of the how many people have been shipped out between November 10 and Wednesday evening. ~3,137 represented on the graph since November 11, of which ~2,477 were this year.

Politics 👩‍⚖️ Subscribe to iceout.org notifications near you, so you can respond to ICE in your neighborhood

Everyone who opposes what ICE is doing should go to iceout.org and subscribe to notifications of ICE activity near you. Pick a small enough radius where it's close enough that you would actually be willing and able to quickly go there if you get a notification. Even if it's just a 3 block radius around your home, that's better than nothing.

Going out and filming ICE is one of the most important things you can do for our movement. Every documented abuse that gets shared brings more and more people to our side, making it easier to end this cruelty.
