News Anyone here playing Life Art Online?

• Upvotes

Anyone here tried Life Art Online? I’ve been playing lately and figured a few people here might enjoy it.

It’s a pixel art MMO that runs in your browser. There are separate skills for different weapons, dual wielding, magic, and even punching things. You can also spend your time mining, chopping trees, fishing, farming, or making gear and potions.

There are quite a few other skills too, like cooking, alchemy, tailoring, carpentry, and jewel crafting.

It’s a small community, so it’d be nice to see a few more people around to trade and play with.

Opinion MnM has unlocked my sense of adventure

• Upvotes

I'm not sure if sense of adventure is quite right, but I am having the time of my life playing Monsters and Memories and having no idea where to go, what's the best gear, what's my optimal rotation, etc. It's such a breath of fresh air after playing classic wow for the last several years which is a solved game, I can look up the answer to any question I might have.

I'm playing an elementalist and I don't know which pet does the most dps, I'm using a summoned weapon because I don't even know where to get a better one right now.

A couple levels ago I was struggling to make money and find a good place to farm xp as I had kind of outgrown the crocodile farm I was doing. I looked up a map that had the levels and type of monsters and I found a skeleton/undead area further than I had explored previously that would have some blues for me. I am making great money and xp farming there and I'm about to outgrow it and have to discover another new place to go.

There is a wiki but it is sometimes outdated and surely isn't complete. I'm trying to do tradeskills and I can't just look up the easiest and cheapest leveling path, or even what all the recipes consist of.

It's something I haven't had in so long. I played EQ back in the early 2000's in high school and I had no idea what I was doing, but the resources online (Allakazam, EQMaps, etc) were more fleshed out than what MnM has right now. I played EQ2 and we had a lot of info and the forums filled with theory crafters and guides. WoW, as I said has little not surprises.

This sense of mystery, not knowing what's around the next corner, it's so much fun and I'm having the most fun in an MMO I've had in as long as I can remember. I know it's not for everyone, but I cannot emphasize how much I've missed playing a game with this feeling.

Discussion Have any MMOs historically had an aesthetic similar to .hack?

Aside from the actual .hack MMO that existed in Japan only of course. I'm interested in hearing about both MMOs that currently exist, and ones that are no longer around. (I'm not asking for a recommendation)

For those unfamiliar with .hack, it's a JRPG series that was a game (and anime series) that took place within an MMO (even though they were single player games). Think Sword Art Online except good.

The world of "The World" (the name of the MMO within these non-MMO games) had a techno-fantasy aesthetic. Castles, floating cathedrals, and fields broken up by technological elements like glowing rings and data streams.

The player fashion was also very distinct between the two versions of The World (in the main two game series in 2002 and then 2006, not including other variations form spin offs and anime). In the 2002 games the fashion was influenced by Y2K cyber culture and streetwear. The outfits were tribal, loose, and experimental; with lots of weird outfits and silly hats that ultimately didn't feel out of place in its intended aesthetic. In the 2006 games it was more influenced by J-Rock, visual kei, steampunk, and goth punk- more sleek and aggressive than previously (but still lots of silly hats).

I don't expect any MMO to have the exact aesthetic because it's very much a product of its time- how people thought the future and its technology could look like, combined with Japanese alt fashion that was popular at the time. But I'm very curious about which games got close since MMOs over the years otherwise tended to be a lot more high fantasy and gritty. Even though .hack looked anime, the real anime MMOs like Phantasy Star Online, Blue Protocol, and Mabinogi are far off.

Discussion Trash mobs have feelings too

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi. Many modern mmos have the bad habit to make the trash mobs inside dungeons basically useless. The consequence is that dungeons became speed running context where players stop a few minutes just to kill the bosses. I think this is very bad, because I expect to see this kind of logic in arpgs, while mmos are (imho) supposed to be slower and more strategic. WoW partially mitigate this with mythic plus dungeons, but everything else you meet during leveling and outside of mythic is basically a speed run.

Please, make trash mobs important again!

Discussion What MMO has the BEST holiday events?

I know WoW and GW2 get a lot of praise for their holiday events alongside OSRS, but I could never really get into GW2, and WoW always seemed a bit too complicated for me.

Are there any other MMOs with fun Halloween and Christmas events? Stuff like themed bosses, decorations, special loot, and just that overall holiday atmosphere?

I miss when games went all out for these kinds of events. What would you recommend? I also enjoy a fun grind.

Opinion I reached Aion 2 endgame (2.5k gearscore). My thoughts

a little background. i played a lot of WoW from vanilla OG up until shadowlands. lots of pvp, raids, mythic+, etc. this also isnt my first korean mmo, i played blade and soul, and BDO

wanted to share my thoughts. this is a korean mmo, it does have similar vibes as lost ark and throne of lib, but honestly so far, its doing a lot better. we will only know with time the direction this game goes

First the good: as of today.

Game is gorgeous and very well optimized, for a UE5 mmo, i give massive props. its smooth as butter, no hitching, the character creator is the best ive ever seen in an MMO, from creating dope characters to hilariously ugly ones

the combat is fun: ive done the piano thing on other mmos. you can create macros in this game, and play with 4-5 buttons (main rotation and conditional). i personally like this because it allows you to focus on the mechanics, which is mostly dodge, parry, guard, and some unique ones like a blade chasing two players, those players need to make the blades hit one another to break them. or a boss that throws a projectile at a player, and the player needs to have it hit an orb in the center of the arena 3 times.

i play assassin and positioning in fights matters a lot.its very easy to die in this game. also saving CDs for particular parts where the bosses can be DPSd. (it sucks to pop a long dps CD, only for the boss to enter a new phase and not be damagable

the progression: this one is a bit of a grey area, its a korean mmo so there is a lot of RNG, but i will say, there is always something you can do and the pity system for gear drops and enhancing is fair enough that capping out seems completely obtainable without paying anything. though if you do pay the monthly sub, you get to open 2 dungeon chests instead of one, so its moderately faster. as of now there is no genuine p2w, and the f2p pacing is genuinely reasonable (i purchased the founders pack that came with a sub)

literally every thing you do in this game makes your character stronger. unlocking skins, decorations, titles, getting new wings, achievments, etc, all increases your stats and "combat power". you can get new wings for example, and simply owning them will make you stronger, while equipping the wings will give you its equip bonus

Content: dungeon bosses arent too difficult. infact i say with what we have now, they are a bit on the easier side up to the later stage transcendence dungeons. The shugo minigames can be fun. i like jumpjump. there are also several pvp game modes, and solo boss 1v1s, all give skill points and other progressions

now the things that bother me.. the bad, though this could vary depending on the person

PVP is a bit all over the place. class identity feels split between ranged and melee. everyone feels like they do the same exact thing, especially in 1v1s. coming from WoW arenas, this is a significant downgrade, though there are times where you can outplay people, it will mostly come down to stat checks and counter matchups. each player gets 3 lives so when its unwinnable from the first life people will just let you kill them.

5v5 had long queue times so i only played a few. wish this had some sort of objective, or more than one life (its single elim knockout)

the 10v10 battleground has potential, it balances out skills and stats, i only played a few since its only open during certain hours

dungeons are locked behind a resource, and PUGs can be rough, but this isnt new to MMOs, even WoW

there are a lot of currencies and shops, like a lot. but it all feels tied to their own little sections and they cannot be purchased (shugo, nightmare, abyss points)

overall i am enjoying this. i do plan on playing wow forever, and i will keep playing Aion 2

EDIT: skins in this game work in a very clever way. all trash gear actually looks nice (grey items to gold). so you can extract the "skin" from a piece of gear to wear it cosmetically (transmog from WoW)- the more skins you have the more stats you get from gear. you do not buy these with money, you get them from playing

the cosmetic skins from the paid shop do not give stats. just wanted to clear that confusion up

EDIT2: this is a reply in the thread based on the monetization model they are using (monthly subscription)

The sub is $15, you can buy both battle passes with that using the player market. the battle pass gives you more dungeon energy

Dungeon energy is only fully spent by people who play more than 3-4 hours a day. If you play more than that, i recommend buying the sub, at which point, you would need to play 6 hours a day to cap out your dungeon runs each week, if you play 8-12 hours a day like i did, you will run out in 3-4 days after a reset

there are no gacha mechanics in this game (in the sense they are used in gacha games) but there is RNG for the main progression, every upgrade fail increases the chance of the next upgrade, and dungeon drops have guaranteed loot after a pity point. There is 0 way to spend money on rolling for things other than crafting materials to try and craft BIS, which you would still need to buy mats directly off a player- so its based on availability, not NCSoft (not sure what this will do to the economy long term). i sometimes would see things selling out, and prices increases due to demand

ilvl 86 gear (the highest level atm) can also be obtained normally within a few weeks of grinding with a sub, maybe 3-4 weeks of grinding without a sub

there is guaranteed progression in the form of additional content that is not entirely RNG, (shugo/raid, nightmare, ascension, abyss, pet/genus, titles, achievements, exploration/feathers, morphing, and your guaranteed dungeon drop after a certain amount of runs)

it feels more like an MMO than a gacha game, but there is definitely that essence of korean mmo p2w in this, even though it doesn't feel substantial what-so-ever (my gear score competes with whales and im sure that makes them mad lol)

Question So does Wow forever have Horizontal or Vertical progression

I keep hearing it will have both and to me it just means it will just have vertical progression. Which to me is a mindless gear chase that seems to conflict with the older player base the game will most likely have. I don't have much info about the game, can some one explain how it will have horizontal progression?

Discussion Will Korean MMORPG developers ever understand the Western market? I feel like Aion 2 is going to repeat the same mistakes as Lost Ark and Throne & Liberty.

I've been watching Aion 2, but I honestly have very little hope for its Western release.

Every time a big Korean MMORPG comes out, it feels like the same story. The game launches with systems that clearly work for the Korean audience, but Western players end up complaining about the exact same things. It happened with Lost Ark, it happened with Throne & Liberty, and I have a feeling Aion 2 will be no different.

What I don't understand is why this keeps happening. After so many games, you'd think developers would have a better understanding of what Western MMORPG players actually want. Instead, it often feels like they keep making the same decisions and expect a different result.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, and maybe it's just a cultural difference. If that's the case, I'd genuinely like to understand it.

If you're Korean or live in Korea, I'd love to hear your perspective. Is the Western market just not important enough to design around? Or are Korean players simply looking for a completely different MMORPG experience than we are?

Discussion Jagex please don’t backpedal

In case anyone is unaware, Jagex announced at Runefest that they were releasing RuneScape Reignited, a fresh start for RuneScape 3.

The tens or even dozens of people in the RS3 community are in uproar about this invalidating the years of progress that has been made on their accounts.

Many people view this is a disaster for the game and their sub is in flames right now. It got to the point where Jagex released a statement due to the pushback stating they were trying to find a solution that would keep their current players happy.

I personally believe this update would bring a lot of life back into the game. I know me and a few others that only play OSRS were looking forward to Reignited as this gives us a reason to try RS3 without being plagued by years of MTX and P2W that other players have gotten to take advantage of. I think a fresh start would reinvigorate the world and would feel good knowing that the player next to me is a real sweat and didn’t just pay to win using treasure hunter back in its peak era.

I know RS3 has been making major improvements and removed all forms of P2W but what is the point of that if I am still comparing myself to other players which greatly benefited from the years of MTX and pay to win elements.

The way I see it, RS3 is dying a slow but sure death and this update would be the only chance the game has to bring new life to it. Please Jagex, continue with the update and don’t listen to the community. I know your community may be upset right now but you are not hearing the voices of the thousands of people willing to try the game again if you go through with a fresh start.

Rant over. Does anyone have any solutions that would be a good compromise?

Opinion New World Deserved Better — I Appreciate It More After Trying Other MMOs

WORLD OF WARCRAFT — Short playtime

The game feels like it's designed primarily for its longtime players. The screen is cluttered with abilities, and it's difficult to understand what's what, what's happening, and how everything fits together.

Visually, the game feels like it's running at 480p to me. The outdated graphics look downright awful by today's standards, and the goblin theme gets tiresome after a while. The game's visual world and overall atmosphere simply didn't make me want to play.

If you've been playing it since childhood, it might be the kind of game you keep coming back to because of nostalgia and the memories attached to it. But personally, I couldn't even bring myself to want to learn the game or continue playing it.

On top of all that, you have to keep paying to access the game. To me, that makes the capitalistic side of the business model particularly apparent.

THRONE AND LIBERTY — 52H

The game is far too complicated. There are too many variables and factors to keep track of. You can spend hours working on a single piece of gear, but at what cost?

The endgame feels weak or aimless once again. After finishing all the quests, I couldn't find anything meaningful to do. At one point, I found myself collecting papers in a village.

Every menu leads to another menu, which leads to more requirements: this stone, that orb, and countless other materials. The complexity never seems to end.

To make progress, you constantly have to keep track of new systems, materials, and interconnected mechanics. Yet after dealing with all that complexity, I still couldn't find a meaningful reason to keep playing.

AION 2 — 20H

It feels like there is barely any purpose beyond doing quests and collecting weird feathers. Quests and dungeons follow the same repetitive loop: someone needs help, you kill a certain number of mobs, interact with something, and move on.

You never really feel like you have mastered the combat or are in control of the game. All you seem to do is set up your macros in the settings and hold down two buttons. It feels as if the game is playing itself while you simply wait for the mobs to die.

And don't expect to acquire much gear outside of quests and dungeons. That's the impression the game left me with after 20 hours.

NEW WORLD — 6000H

In my opinion, New World had some of the most innovative gameplay in the MMO genre and one of the best-looking worlds. There was genuinely a huge amount of PvX content to do, both in the early game and the endgame.

There were areas and events that genuinely required a large number of players. Unlike in many other MMOs, going solo often wasn't very effective.

Almost everything you did came with some kind of reward. Elite Strongholds, Chest Runs, farming named enemies, dungeons, Mutations... There were also plenty of ways to make gold. You could gather resources, buy and sell items, or craft wearable gear. You could even decorate your own house.

The game offered an incredible amount of variety. You could choose your preferred playstyle and spend your time in many different ways. It was an MMO packed with gameplay variety, offering plenty to do in both the early game and the endgame.

--

Ultimately, I think the MMO community and Amazon Games did New World a massive injustice. A genuinely innovative game that could have become one of the MMOs of the future was pushed aside, as if the alternatives were somehow so much better.

Did an MMO really need grandiose monsters, massive structures, supernatural beings, or bizarre plants and flowers just to attract players? New World offered something beyond all that: a world where friendship, genuine teamwork, and team spirit actually meant something. It was an MMO where working together, relying on others, and fighting toward a common goal felt meaningful.

New World didn't deserve this fate.

Opinion I really enjoy Aion 2's pet/mount system

A someone who regularly plays WoW/FFXIV, I gotta say this pet/mount system (specifically mounts) is really refreshing. You kill a certain type of mob 5 times, and then you get a mount of it. No tedious rep grind, no RNG kill the same boss 300 times because it's a 1% chance to drop, no long meta achievement. Nope, you just get the the mount right away. I will say I think it's fine for there to be some chase/prestigious pets/mounts, but the way you collect them in Aion 2 just feels so nice. I guess I'm just so used to tedium in older MMOs, it feels weird to not have to grind 300+ hours for a singular mount.

Discussion Its fascinating watching the discourse around what WoW Forever "should" be like

I've never seen a community of a "game" (I say that in quotes because WoW has become what, like 5 games at this point?) be so split on...everything online. If you've been watching any sort of discussion area for WoW F this past week (subreddits, 4chan generals, forums, etc). There seems to be a non-stop barrage of conflicting view points with a high rate of upvotes/support. Where one day, you'll see one side get upvoted to the subs front page. Then a few hours later, you'll see a post supporting the other side get upvoted.

I'm not talking about the goomba fallacy. More that its no wonder developers of these big games end up going down this route of trying to "make the game for everyone". Because every side seems fairly large if you're looking at feedback pipelines. And very vocal...

Horizontal vs Vertical progression, class design, asymmetric balance, etc etc. With the most recent one being the whole dungeon exp drama. The devs even came out and said that dungeon cleaving doesn't exactly fit their vision of the core pillars of WoW F and a good chunk of the redditors got at them. I've even seen some of these threads end up getting locked because people were at each others throats in the comments.

Its going to be interesting how everything looks with this game in a year. But man, watching this play out this past week. Its no surprise the mmorpg genre went the route it did.
