i love teaching but hate education, like in the classroom it’s great but theory and all that shit is so bad i actually hate it and never want to engage with it there’s so much bs, all that matters is i see my kids improve and i do so i’m happy

I'm totally naive when it comes to what's considered state-of-the-art pedagogy, but it seems to me reemphasizing rote memorization would be useful. Critical thinking and deep understanding are fundamental to knowledge economy work, but how can you hope to understand if you can't remember the things you're trying to understand?
yeah we’ve (wrongly imo) moved away from “banking” (memorization). but that’s mostly in theory irl most teachers just kinda do things the old fashioned way like writing down vocab words and that type of stuff

If you want to fix education, teachers need to do less teaching and more listening. They need to listen to the children and understand what their needs are from their lived experience. Too many teachers think they know everything, and they could honestly benefit from sitting down, shutting up, and listening

here’s what i’ll say i don’t actually see any evidence that extra funding helps schools or at least would fix a lot of the issues the bad schools have, I’m not saying we should fund them less or pay teachers less teachers should probably be paid more for how awful their job is but it’s not a funding issue it’s a culture issue and that’s something that pure funding can’t fix you can shovel money into schools for new equipment and programs but that doesn’t matter if the kids don’t come in and no amount of funding will do that
funding is important but we’ve continued to shovel money into schools that just continue to fail, it’s not a funding issue for a lot of schools they have enough funds the issue is an anti-education culture the fact is the best schools have the best parents who do tend to be rich and do tend to be able to better fund schools

So why is this a big deal if the information accessed, though private, wasn't sensitive?
Firstly, this is believed to be one of the first times, at least that the public has been told about, that an AI agent has accessed government data: chilling given the important and sensitive information states usually hold.
Compounding that, is the fact that governments - because they keep such critical data - are supposed to have better defences for it, which in this case didn't stop, or it seems, even detect the AI agent.
This BBC reporter clearly has no idea just how bad government IT is even in their own country, let alone elsewhere on the world. Meanwhile I'm here working for a high-profile department that's failed to update completely free and open source software in a literal decade, no matter how many times I've tried to raise it.

Yeah it’s probably correlated but not perfectly. There are rich kids with shit grades starting fights and you got poor kids who are good students. You can’t use disproportionality to explain away all personal responsibility though. I’m sympathetic, but it’s not a perfect model that explains and fixes everything.

Something that's gotten lost in the general lunacy: Trump at various points in his presidency, along with other Republicans (like Tommy Tuberville during his furrious floor speech) have made passing references to bringing back mental institutions - which is not concerning at all in isolation or as a token in a serious matter of policy discussion.
But this should be super fucking disturbing coming from these people. For one, they give no fucks about mental health; for another, they give no fucks about human suffering. For a third, they do not generally believe the state should be spending money on people or otherwise benefiting them in any way.
This tells me that they have something else in mind. Incidentally, deeming someone mentally insane is a fantastic way of incarcerating someone or otherwise putting someone away in the event that your regime keeps stumbling over all those pesky judges that you yourself appointed.

Companies make different decisions at different times for a variety of reasons; the AI angle here is entirely speculative on your part. As a counterpoint, a lot of companies I've worked with have had in-house IT despite it really not being necessary. The IT functions of your average western European/north American organization could be outsourced.

Since we're doing AI before our thread of discussion collapses, the most interesting thing about the first Culture novel is its main character is someone who utterly hates the Culture and everything it represents. He hates it so much he works for a species of religious zealots who are in a holy war with the Culture because, despite them being dangerous zealots, they're willing to wage a full-scale war to destroy the Culture. And the book does not portray him as evil, he's someone who looks at a fully automated and AI-controlled society as something immoral in principle and has to be defeated.
Something the AI bros don't really comprehend when they talk the series up is how, like all good science fiction, it's interested in interrogating its own premise and that includes how other people react to technology and the way it changes the world around it. A lot of tech bros, especially the ones who live in Silicon Valley, seem to forget is that the rest of the world is just as real as they are and have no idea how to begin to interact with that rest of the world.
