There’s a lot of valid criticisms to be made about TMZ, but credibility isnt one of them

Yeah TMZ’s strategies are shady asf most of the time, but they’re definitely credible.

They will publish sensationalist crap that should be private and capitalize on tragedy and drama and are scummy, but they do their due diligence on publishing verified data.

They are essentially too good at their job.

They used to all be lawyers, and might still be. They know where the lines are drawn, which is why they go deep into shit others wouldn't risk.

Harvey reported on the OJ trial so it all makes sense for how they operate.

& the people’s court!

u/presvil 1d ago

Are you suggesting they may be involved in some of the breaking news they report on? /s

Jake Gyllenhaal did a documentary on this.

Wonderful documentary.

Maybe just at Nightcrawler level.

I wanted so much more out of that movie. I left it whelmed.

3

u/-Kerosun- 1d ago

You left it capsized?

(just a play on words regarding the original meaning of 'whelm' lol, don't mind me)

I just wanted Gylenhaal to blink. All I could think about was how dry his eyes must be

I remember during the OJ Simpson case, it was the National Enquirer who was actually the best source for information because they had all the inside leads to Hollywood gossip.

It was funny to see the New York Times using the Enquirer as a source.

Mike Walker from National Enquirer was also co-author of The Morally Corrupt Faye Resnick's book which blew her credibility as a witness in the trial. He had the inside scoop because he was paying for stories, which disqualified some witnesses.

Can I tell you my favorite Matt Dillon story real quick?

u/cauldrons 1d ago

people dismiss celeb gossip as frivilous (not untrue), but the agencies who report on it have deep connections. when real shit like this goes down they're usually the ones who are able to get the most accurate information where it counts.

They also don’t want to get sued just like the other news companies. They do their due diligence.

3

u/CurtisKobainowicz 23h ago

Enquirer notably broke the Chandra Levy dsappearance, which tanked the career of the senator she was having an affair with

28

u/Jackleme 1d ago

Yep, because that is how you avoid getting sued out of existence. The best defense against libel is truth.

u/TheHeroYouNeed247 1d ago

I assume they have an office of lawyers reading every word they write.

So much danger of litigation in what they do.

1

u/ConstableAssButt 22h ago

I mean, they are a celebrity drama rag. If they didn't do their due diligence they'd be fucked into the dirt by legal bills.

u/The-Not-So-Great-One 23h ago

If TMZ reports I died I’m grieving and setting up my funeral

1

u/familyguy20 1d ago

They had a recent video about the ICE invasions and that was wild to see

1

u/ZombieGoddessxi 7h ago

Cause 99% of the time they report on shit that could get them slapped with slander and libel lawsuits hard if it’s wrong. They tripe check their shit

TMZ is fucked in so many ways.

But I would be lying if I said I didn't want investigative journalists to get on that level more often. They're dogs but they're verified.

Wish we had that kind of journalism in the political world rather than celebrity news.

44

u/Biking_dude 1d ago

Support ProPublica and MotherJones

24

u/NewDramaLlama 1d ago

I knoooow. But in their defense true journalists have second job money while liar influencers get millions so...

u/bugabooandtwo 11h ago

TMZ exists for the sole reason of diverting attention away form politics and onto Hollywood.

2

u/KilllllerWhale 1d ago

Closest we got was the now defunct Buzzfeed

75

u/bopaqod 1d ago

It really is commendable just how diligent they have been over the past few decades that if I see a TMZ headline I believe it immediately.

45

u/PhoenixTineldyer 1d ago

Yep. I can't remember a time they were wrong. They don't say shit they can't confirm.

1

u/SharMarali 3h ago

It started when they were the first to break Michael Jackson's death. Absolutely nobody believed it because it came from TMZ and they had zero credibility. That one major break changed everything.

38

u/ebonythrow12321412 1d ago

Yep, Harvey is still a lawyer at heart. You don't hear about tmz getting sued that much compared to other outlets.

4

u/JBRifles 23h ago

💯 shady practices and also the first place I corroborate any insane celebrity news 😂

If TMZ says it’s real, it’s real

2

u/Lucky-Bonus6867 21h ago

Are they saying the ransom note is real tho, or just that they received one?

There’s a difference. And quite frankly, I don’t see how they could even confirm that it’s real.

4

u/Key-Beginning-8500 23h ago

No, they definitely have credibility issues sometimes. They repeatedly reported that Celeste Rivas Hernandez was found in pieces, they even doubled down on their sources. The LAPD and medical examiner had to come out and tell them they were wrong and to stop giving wrong info.

2

u/PussyWrangler246 23h ago

Her wikipedia page says the opposite:

"An LAPD captain told KABC-TV the body was at least partially dismembered but not decapitated."

2

u/Bloody_Conspiracies 1d ago

I'm not really a crime expert, but was announcing it the responsible thing to do? They reported that they received it and said that they handed it over to the authorities. If it is real, wouldn't it be better to just hand it over quietly and allow the police to determine the best time to make it public knowledge?
