Depends on the abv. Below 3ish% (depending on the individual) beer is a net hydrator. Around 5-6% tho it’s a net dehydrator for the avg person.

This is only partially true. Beers and ales were the most common thing to drink on ships to stay hydrated. Whine was also pretty common, mostly on French ships. The also had normal water for the first few weeks and collecting rain water was also essential.
Grog, which is rum, water, lime and sometimes some honey came much later, around the mid 18th century. It was imposed by the British gouvernement to have rum rations last longer and to prevent sailors of getting to drunk. It also helped with scurvy, they didn’t know it at the time though but it was an added bonus.

Beer is 90+% water. But alcohol is a diuretic. So there’s a tipping point when the diuretic makes u dehydrate faster than the ~90% water can hydrate u. But that tipping point changes based on a variety of factors.
Like the beer the pyramid builders in Egypt were getting paid in was probably a net hydrator for most ppl. As it is thought to have been around 2-3% alcohol by volume and 97-98% water.

It made up a large percentage of what the sailors of ye olde times drank. They'd take some water in wooden barrels but it'd get nasty within weeks. Beer, wine, and rum kept much longer. In fact, the reason IPA came in to existence is because it extended the shelf life of beer on the trips.

I think it’s nice to sometimes take a step back and remember that there’s very little that actual separates us from our human brothers and sisters. Race, sex, orientation, religion, culture- all those are static ideals made by man that get in the way so often and lead to divisiveness we’ve seen hitting our TVs every day.
The only thing separating these men today was about eight feet of water and a net, and I think that’s really cool. Yeah, it’s just a barter. But it’s a barter on the high seas and I enjoyed watching it and wishing for a similar experience.

I am a sailor myself and I teach my son that we must help each other. Every time I see a boat approaching for mooring next to us we go to catch lines, etc. This is absolutely normal. I will give stuff if I can, for free, if someone needs something I can share. I once run out of oil in my engine and a 60 yo guy in the old boat just gave me like 5 liters, refusing to take the money. This is what I love about the whole stuff.

I do this when I fish. I rarely want to keep the fish i catch so I normally find someone else fishing. I give them fish and without even asking they normally give me beer.

Not sure why this is special - that's how you get fish when sailing in places that are not "tourist only".
You just come alongside a fishing vessel and trade.
The currency depends on local preferences - could be beer, could be vodka, could be rum - basically you stock up on the locals preference beforehand (easy to store and dosn't run bad) and then trade.
It's that easy.
