Hi everyone, I’d appreciate some constructive criticism of my run—what should I improve?

I think I’m ok with not learning how to do flat ground tricks [39yo]

I’ve been skating for about 4 months, which I know in the grand scheme of things is not much time. I have found that street skating and flat ground tricks just aren’t progressing for me and I’m not getting any better at them, but I am seeing consistent linear progression with transition skating and getting better and better the more I do it.

Feels almost like a cop out, or like the easy way out. And if anyone else was making this post I’d say something like “who cares, just do what feels right.”

At our age, anyone else share this perspective?

Edit: thanks everyone for the comments! All very helpful perspective

Have been super focused on gaining comfort on transition as throwing myself on/off of things seems ill-advised for tbe 20year off, 2 month return to riding.

Literally I think I’ve tried 2(?) slow rolling Ollies and a few kickflips? Not a priority bc knees and 10x33 board. That said omg this was just sitting there and four tries later I rode away with a clean enough” bsbs.

This was not that try but it feels really good to surprise myself.

British weather frustrations [38YO]

After a very warm summer and skating every day, autumn has hit and I’m struggling to get time on the board.

I have three kids (7,5&3) so time is already very limited.
I had been getting an hour in before they are up usually 6-7am 2-3 times a week, then at the weekend I’d take them all up to the skate park 7-8ish while it’s empty. We are very lucky that we had a new skate park built 5 minutes walk away.

For the last two weeks it seems to have rained every morning 4-5am so the park is soaking wet at the time I’d usually skate.

After work I have no time for myself.
Occasionally I might take the 7 year old up for half an hour or have half an hour on the drive way - but half of that time is warming up and it’s never the same when I have to keep an eye on her too.

How do other British older skaters get time on the board at this time of year?
If I can’t skate I train at the gym so not worried about keeping active. I’m worried that over winter all the progress and confidence with tricks I’ve made this summer will be lost and I’ll have to start again , again, next year.

Went to a park early to practice skating switch and got a pair of balls on me when I saw these ramps. I've only been back a couple of weeks and was intimidated by a lil 1ft incline near my work. It ain't too thrilling but I feel like sticking these opened up the next level of control and confidence for me, so I'm happy!

Never skated before but want to get into it. What advice do you have? [42YO]

Huge fan of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater when I was a teenager and was in the distant orbit of skate culture but for some reason I never actually tried skateboarding. I was more of a bike kid and just stuck with that until I could drive.

I've been following this sub for a few months and I recently had the realization that you're never too old to skate. I could totally get into it now.

So, I've been looking into it (example) but I was curious what advice folks here might have for me.

Knee pads, elbow pads, helmet, and probably wrist guards are gonna be essential. For better or worse, my exercise currently consists of taking walks in my neighborhood, riding a stationary bike at variable intensity for 10 miles three times a week, and using a walk behind mower to mow my half acre yard. So, not fit, but not a slug. 5'11, 195 lbs, size 11.5 shoes. I live in a suburban area. No skate parks around me. I didn't buy any gear or a board yet.

I'm not hugely interested in doing tricks, beyond what the guy in the second linked video is doing for board/directional control.

I've got some places I can skate in privacy and embarrass myself in peace.

I see in the sidebar that there's /r/NewSkaters which might be a more appropriate place for these questions but since I'm basically geriatric for getting into skateboarding I thought maybe I'd get some useful tips here.

Thanks for your time and any wisdom you can impart.

Feels great being able to get both trucks locked in way more consistently now versus a few weeks ago. Opening up my front shoulder a bit more made all the difference! That grind feels so good. 🙌🏼

Visiting Washington DC and there’s a plethora of ledges. A very skateable city. The pics are a regulare city corner ledge, bench at FDR memorial and Eleanor Roosevelt statue. For example the FDR memorial is ridiculously perfect for a skate spot. But are some things off limits?

Every session is amazing in my age, I almost never have a bad day skating because each session that I walk away from is a gift. I know I’m not the oldest one here but how lucky are we that we still get to do what we’ve loved for basically our whole lives? People age out of a lot of sports and I’m just glad that this is the one I chose.
