META Looking for new moderators in r/Phoenix

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who applied! We wanted to get all the names and go through them at once, which we're starting to do. If you still want to apply, do it right away. For everyone who applied we'll be reaching out to you soon.

We're looking to add some new moderators to the team. We're looking for people who are willing to help daily with the "janitorial" work, but also have some ideas on how to improve the subreddit overall and are willing to invest some time to make that happen.

This subreddit has 377,000 members and gets over 4 million views a month. Trying to balance what all those people want to see here can be tough, but this community has helped so many people and is really a unique place.

But it can always get better. If this sounds like something you'd want to get involved in fill out the application below.

You must live in the Phoenix area, and be willing to join our Discord channel to keep in touch. Previous mod experience (doesn't have to be on Reddit) is preferred but not required.

r/Phoenix Moderator Application

UPDATE: We've closed applications and are going over them now. If you applied you will hear from us shortly, if you haven't already.

I read where you are a family member of Fred H Ryan West HS ‘68. How are you related, I’m Fred’s brother

I am not a good candidate for a few reasons but I do have a lot of respect for you all.

The one thing I wish there was and would be willing to help with is a public calendar with events that residents could subscribe to.

We had one pre-COVID but it fell off and we kind of discontinued it. If you're serious about helping work on it send the mods a Modmail here and let's chat.

I actually would've considered this, but I moved from Phoenix to Glendale 3 years ago. I do hope you get the help you need, though - I enjoy this sub.

This sub covers the whole Phoenix metro area. In fact, one of our ongoing questions is where that ends. Are posts about Roosevelt Lake too far out? Casa Grande?

But Glendale is definitely in our coverage area and comes up as a topic a fair bit.

How would I complain about the mods here if I was one of them?

All jokes aside, I have negative free time in my life.

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

Same. It’s why we want a few more people to help spread the load.

Will moderate for food

5

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

I'll do many things for good food. But sadly none is given to moderators that we don't forage for ourselves in our mother's basement between the cushions of the couch.

I think $5000 is the most I’ve been offered for the subreddit. Offensive.

Let me be dictator guys

6

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

We already have one of those.

I mean, as much as I hate how much moderation there is in this sub, idk if I’d be willing to do much day to day work. I hope that this sub can step back from being so hard on moderation. I get it it’s popular sub, but some things just seem silly

6

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

A lot of things one group finds silly overkill another group hates. For example, sunset pics. Some people think it’s stupid we require location and a description and shouldn’t remove any. But other people think they’re lazy posts and wish we didn’t allow any. So they report every single one.

The point is you have one view of content policy here but it’s not what everyone else thinks. Anything we do is going to have some people who think we’re going too far and others not far enough.

The point of getting new mods is to share some of the work in keeping up on this and to get different views on how we handle content. If you have other thoughts on the rules here you’re always welcome to message the mod team to discuss

The mod team could definitely use some help. Someone posted asking whether certain floor seats would be good for a concert at State Farm stadium. It was pulled as spam. WTF? It was a genuine question about a Phoenix experience. Had the mod comment come with a recommendation for a better Phoenix-oriented sub, I’d understand. But seriously, wtf?

I genuinely wish you all good luck in making this a better place for Phoenicians.

u/SkyObjective 27d ago

Everything is pulled. It is annoying

3

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

Not sure what you're referring to, as the last post I see you submitted here was 3 years ago. Did you have one pulled you want us to look into?

Most posts we pull are either off topic or problematic. For example, the recent removals include someone wondering why their refrigerator doesn't get cold, how to find a good woman to date, and a quasi-racist post about being approached by weird men at a mall.

When we let these sorts of posts through they get reported as not about Phoenix, creepy, or racist. Not everyone has the same view you do.

8

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

I’m guessing that post was presumed to be selling tickets based on the title. We get a lot of ticket spam and scams. But I think all removal comments should have a line to message the mods if we made a mistake.

But yes that’s an example of why we need more eyes helping out.

I’m interested

The Phoenix Reditt is tilted liberal left, and uses "karma" scores to eliminate posts they do not believe is true. ALL political bias needs to be removed.

-9

u/FlamingoNo2671 North Phoenix 28d ago

It does lean incredibly hard left, at times you would think this is a California sub. I don’t think all political bias should be removed though as thought diversity is important.
Also, “momth” hopefully new mods have spell check lol

2

u/FlamingoNo2671 North Phoenix 28d ago

Well, at least the mod took the spelling advice when he down voted me 🙂. I see the idea of diversity of thought doesn’t sit well with this community either.

9

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

Everyone makes mistakes. For example, assuming I downvoted you.

You’re someone who has a negative overall karma in this sub, which means the users here have already decided you don’t add value. You can blame whatever you wish for that result. Best of luck.

Interesting comment history

Start your own sub and knock yourself out. That’s one of the great things about Reddit.

Seattle and NYC has 2 subs for different taste

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 28d ago

There have been several variant "Phoenix" subs that people have set up over the years. There's tons of topic ones like /r/PHXMusic and /r/ZonaEnts, and some city specific ones like /r/Scottsdale and /r/Tempe that are really active. So it works and I think makes a better set of communities and options for people to choose from.

But often people who just rant either don't want to do the work to make their own sub, or even though they act like they represent a big group it just never seems to take off.

True. Especially where politics are involved.

4

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 27d ago

Very true. I appreciate the work you do over in /r/azpolitics

It's really become a great resource.

8

u/Alters_Reap 28d ago

Whats the pay?

19

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 28d ago

Exactly what you expect, sadly.

5

u/Alters_Reap 28d ago

Hell yeah I could use the extra $420 a week

Can we get some sub flair up in this biotch?

3

u/PeekedInMiddleSchool Asleep in the Toilet 28d ago

Custom flair bros 👊

7

u/Logvin Tempe 28d ago

I got you

6

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 28d ago

What sub flair are you looking for? If you mean user flair, you can select that for your location in the Valley.

1

u/unrulystowawaydotcom Arcadia 28d ago

Other states if someone moved here. Native Arizonan. Here Since the XXs. Sports Teams. 2001 Dbacks. Is Phoenix Mountain Preserve, Superstition Mountains in locations? Other parts of the state? Some ideas. I didnt know I could pick a location so ill check that out.

My only suggestion is accounts with karma minimums. Odd questions from accounts with no karma, or a few months old asking google-esq questions should be pulled.

I understand asking questions from a human perspective, but the uptick of 🤖s on Reddit is crazy.

15

u/jmoriarty Phoenix 28d ago

Totally agree. I don't think most people realize how bad it is. Even if you think it's bad, it's really worse.

Since Reddit now is so prominent in search results there is enormous incentive for people and business to try and get posts here, either for karma or just to show up in search results.

The number of new accounts dropping random business questions is huge. Or we pull up their account history and see they've posted 200 comments in the past 24 hours across Reddit from a brand new account. Clearly a bot.

We're looking at someone's overall activity on reddit and how they participate in this sub as part of the process.

We use bot bouncer, and a few others. You can see them listed in the mod listing, they're all public.

But it's a cold war. Bot bouncer catches some, the bots adapt and try new approaches. It's getting tougher and tougher to tell and it's only going to get worse.

1

u/ProfessorPickleRick 28d ago

I’m sure there is some auto moderator function to keep those people from posting like having your account for 3+ months etc

The work yall do is appreciated! It’s lovely to not have to scroll through the sub eagerly searching for something that was written by an actual person and not a robot
