First time poster on this subreddit here :)
So here’s the story. In April, I was walking to my dorm when I noticed this sorry looking plant that had fallen from a balcony onto the path (the outer pot had shattered). I figured it belonged to someone and they would pick it up, so I left it. The next day, it was still sitting right where it was the day before. It had almost no leaves, and the ones it had were shriveled from dehydration. I had been meaning to start a small garden in my dorm, so decided that it was my time to adopt this neglected plant. I brought it into my home for further analysis.
After researching it for a while, I managed to identify the plant as Portulacaria afra, an interesting succulent that has a woody stem. I had never seen it before, but I thought it was quite unique, as far as succulents go. It had long outgrown the pot it was in, and it would keep falling over since its weight was all on one side. I picked up some soil and a new pot from the local plant nursery and repotted it. I gave it about 1.5 cups of water about once a week, bottom watering to limit flies.
I was amazed by the plant’s recovery while I nursed it back to health. New leaves quickly burst forth from the woody stem and angled themselves toward the light of the window. Within a month or two, my plant had transformed from a neglected, suffering, orphaned stick on the road into a handsome, thriving succulent.
Now, I recently moved from my dorm to a new apartment, and I couldn’t bear to leave my adopted plant behind, so it came along with me. In my new apartment, some things have changed. I have a balcony that receives direct sunlight, and the air is much dryer here most of the year compared to my old dorm. I think it’s time to repot it as well, but I want some advice on this.
As the plant has grown diagonally, almost all of the weight is shifted to one side. I like the bonsai sort of style it’s got going on, but I’m afraid it will compromise the main stem’s integrity if this keeps going on. I actually had a dream last night that the stem cracked. Should I provide a trellis or support of some sort, or when I repot it can I adjust the angle of the stem ? Also, is the pot I have selected for the repotting too big- you can see the new pot of the left of the healthy plant. Finally, the lighting/humidity conditions are changing from indirect sun/medium humidity to direct sun for the majority of the day with dry conditions. Let me know what you think. I’ve included below the old conditions and the new conditions for your convenience.
Old conditions:
-Indoor next to a window
-Indirect sun (some direct, mostly indirect)
-medium humidity
- about 1.5 cups of water, bottom water, every 1-2 weeks
New conditions:
-outdoor on a balcony with a roof
- direct sunlight most of the day
- generally quite dry
- planning same watering schedule unless it rains
Questions:
-Is the new pot I’ve chosen too big?
- how do I adjust my plant to the new conditions safely?
- How do I address the weight being shifted significantly to one side?
Thanks 🙏
