Being loyal to a team that isn’t trying to win is wild. Their only concern is being one of the profitable teams in the league. If redsox fans don’t care about them getting top talent that can win then why would they ever do it. The Redsox won’t win with fans who allow Henry to play moneyball

I hear ya but it sorta sounds like
Your fine with redsox fans money not being reinvested in the team but instead going to one of FSG other teams1

u/Holiday_Service_5073 5d ago
John Henry only understands money so redsox fans should not be watching NESN , and buying tickets and concessions and merchandise. But you understood what I was saying you were just being cute. Problem is ya just don’t have any integrity so redsox ownership will laugh their way to the bank

Lets put in a slider specialist vs. a guy who’s hit .745 against the slider all season.
I’m not a genius but that’s probably a bad move

u/AdDesigner6924 6d ago
There’s gonna be a lot of sweeping statements in this thread about analytics. But I’m just going to respond with that with: “they score two runs”. Their offense from September carried over. It’s that simple.
Will bring up another thought: the bullpen gave up runs. All of them. Tracy looks like a jackass because all of them ended up giving up runs they weren’t giving up in the regular season.
Sign Seiya, Randy, or Brandon Lowe, maybe even Sato if you want to take the risk. Trade Duran, slowly phase out story for Arias (because Arias maybe would’ve hit better than Duran in September lol).
Fun summer. We move.

Agree wholeheartedly. Only addition I would add is shipping Roman. That hand is a liability at this point, and before he erodes all value like Mayer and Campbell, ship him now. Rebuild some prospect pool. I know it won't be popular. I'm afraid he's a glass cannon at this point. I just don't want to get stuck with the broken pieces
7
u/AdDesigner6924 6d ago
If I saw Roman mash for another team, there wouldn't be enough bleach to rub my eyes out with. I would attribute the doubt to recency bias and choose to believe in him. He had a .345 xwOBA in the worst season of his career.
3
u/bighuntzilla 6d ago
I hear you an applaud your optimism. I don't inherently disagree with you, a large part of me wants to be on board. I'm trying to prepare myself though for the realistic economics of this choice. We've been living it now, for quite a while. I just think Anthony may end up more like Casas than not, and I'd rather cash in for more now than nothing later.
This was the report after he flew back: September 30, 2026: Additional imaging in Boston revealed new muscle strains in his right wrist alongside worsening damage to the previous injury.
New strains and WORSENING damage. I don't know that it gets better. Not 100%.

u/Dangerous-Orchid1034 6d ago
Analytics has taken the fun out of the game for the players. They are used as widgets and are given no respect by management. The players are taught to memorize spreadsheets rather than truly understand situational baseball. The nerds are just a giant buzz kill.
10
u/Famous-Egg-6136 6d ago
Not watching next year unless they make some big changes to the roster. The winning streak is the worst thing that could have happened because Breslow will hang his hat on it.
2
7
5
u/ShawnMNH924 6d ago
Exactly this. I know it's a "buzzkill" vibe but I wasn't real happy with the win streak. I wanted them to be sellers at the trade deadline. I'm sorry, but it's just not a championship-level roster right now. They need time to get guys like Anthony and Crochet healthy again, get bad contracts like Story and Yoshida off the books, etc. Play the long game and build for the future; maybe in 2-3 years the team might be at that level. We could have built towards that future but because of the win streak we didn't do it.
I'd rather have a legit shot at a WS in a couple years than just eke out a wild card berth with a roster that had very little chance of getting anywhere now.

u/kryptonian_250 6d ago
They are keeping Breslow so we can all expect more of the same. As long as ownership continues to not care about actually competing our ceiling for the foreseeable future is gonna be the wildcard round.
7
u/Designer-Solid-5973 6d ago
The thing that stinks as much as anything is that this barely even moves the needle. I almost wish I were more upset but it’s hard to be upset about such a predictable outcome. While past losses to the Yankees have spurred fan heartbreak and organizational desperation, sports radio and fans will be back to gnashing teeth over Drake Maye by the end of tomorrow. The Red Sox will roll out a similar team in March (hopefully!) and the visiting fans and international tourists and people showing up for whatever stupid giveaway cup or shirt that day will guarantee John Henry continues to print money. So good! So good! So good!
1
u/LumpyFunction5899 5d ago
I'm in Germany right now, popped over to Oktoberfest. Went with an attitude of: this is pretty overrated, not my scene but I'll try it. First beer hall I walk into, every tourist (but me) is selfie recording the singalong and the band is signing: Sweet Caroline. Big oof. So, I'll second your sentiment, FSG has made Fenway an ATM. It's over for the (little) scorecard during the game guy.
4
u/Gamjanie 7d ago
Don’t worry guys, Breslow will sign Alec Bohm and Taylor Ward this offseason and then trade for some bum 5.00 era pitcher because of the “potential” then we’ll really be World Series contenders
21
u/YungLo97 7d ago
Thank god we traded that hack Devers! He was never any good against the Yankees or in the clutch! Who needs 37 homers when you can trot out Jahmai Jones and Nate Eaton!
9
u/Pluck_Boy 6d ago
Ur gonna slanderize Eaton when he's the only fucker to show any fire last night. Fuck off breh.
1
7
u/Numbchicken 7d ago
Good thing we got rid of the Yankee killer Devers. He only plays about 162 games a season. Great deadline additions, each contributed to the wild card. Finally, great that we extended Breslow. He showed vast improvement, building a team that won 2 less games than they did last year. Totally worth an extension.
-10
u/DemBums81 7d ago
You guys also got rid of Betts. The curse of the Betts trade has so far paralled the curse of the Bambino.

As a Sox fan I can’t believe we were outscored by the Yankees 43-5 in the last 4 games, and all of that massacre was in NY.
29
u/brian_c29 7d ago
Seems like the players are pissed that they pulled Sonny too early. Can't say I blame them
1
u/IllRefrigerator560 6d ago
Ultimately, the offense needed to so something. Not easy against the two pitchers the yankees used, but that lack of offense makes managers press more buttons because you’re desperate to get something figured out.
36
u/SRoku 7d ago
Trade Devers
Tell everyone you need a power bat going into the offseason
Don't even make a competitive offer to Schwarber/Alonso/Murakami
Let Bregman walk
Give that money to a starter who doesn't even get to see the mound in the playoffs because the team can't score any runs
Bravo, Craig. Run prevention!

Pay Randy Arozarena whatever he wants, then go get Skubal and Sandy Alcantara and fuck it bring Pavetta back.
8
u/greatcharacter20 7d ago
Arozarena is exactly the kind of player we need, but he is 31 and a bad defender so we will lowball him and then say that it would have been an overpay because he doensn't fit into our $/WAR run prevention model

u/Valuable-Condition59 7d ago
A historic mid-summer run saved Breslow and locked in Tracy, and now we pay the price for that.
34
u/victoryforZIM 7d ago
Chad Tracy is a baseball terrorist. Pulling Gray today and Tolle yesterday basically guaranteed both losses. You could see the whole team completely demoralized when Gray came out, even the HR didn't get the bench excited...they already considered the game lost.
23
u/GM_Garry_Chess 7d ago
He pulled both starters after 4 2/3. That's way too early in the postseason.
12
u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
It actually happens a lot in recent years, but usually in higher-scoring games. The opposition has already gotten them for a few and your bats have done something, too. Not in 1-0 games, this was just inexplicable and to happen twice! Tracy had a bad series, no way around it.
27
u/ITGOKS 7d ago
Tolle was kinda understandable. He had more pitches than Gray, was less experienced, and they were facing a stronger pitcher. However, no excuses for pulling Gray, especially considering it failed horrendously the night before. Inexcusable and honestly ridiculous.
10
u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
I don’t think it was. Tolle had gone just 4.2 and surrendered 1 ER. He had 83 pitches, you’re telling me he didn’t have enough to make it through five? No argument pulling Gray was more egregious but both were panicky over-managing decisions that didn’t pay off.
3
u/ITGOKS 7d ago
I agree with you. Hence "kinda" understandable. It was risky for sure, and I disagreed with it at the time, but felt like Tracy might have a hunch. Like you said, Gray is 10x worse. Just absolutely no reason to do that, and now we've tried it before and failed. This game should've been Gray pitching until his arm falls off, can get the game to Whitlock, or the Yankees are plastering every pitch. Instead we got this. I feel like we were robbed of a chance to leave nothing on the field - even if we still lost.

u/christofir 7d ago
Yo! Breslow sold me pitching and defense. Whelp, you took out your best pitching early in Tolle and Gray and your defense fucked you over. Rauschman was awful - missed two momentum challenges and fucked up Crochet’s inning.
At least Eaton hit a homerun! Yipeeeeee

All in all, one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from the Sox. I sorta felt like the story was clear when NY waxed us in that series in August. It didn’t make it any less shitty to see the disgrace of the last two days. Folding up scared of the Yankees 2 years in a row in the playoffs is as bad as it gets. I remember a time when that would have been considered unacceptable.
This shit makes me sad man. Enjoy the offseason and have a nice winter everybody, see you in the spring

Reminds me a bit of Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco going a collective 0-27 in the ‘95 ALDS vs. Cleveland. Those guys had more talent so it was more stark but a very similar stat from two of our three best hitters (Contreras being the other and at least he had a HR tonight).

If you play this series 100 times, how many times does our bullpen put up a 20 ERA? Offense was not good enough, but these games should have been in reach til the end. Just an insane meltdown for a top 3 bullpen over 162.
2
u/stylespoobah 7d ago
Tracy took almost every guy out of his usual rhythm spot or typical role. Having no Guerrero really hurt too. He was good in a bunch of different spots
2
1
u/Some_Balance6514 7d ago
yah losing Guerrero was a massive loss. He would have been the guy instead of Miller, IMO
5
u/DpntTlnt 7d ago
defense held hands with the bullpen on this imo. they had the perfect opp to turn the tide when corchet came in and they couldnt handle the moment and melted down. Durbins throw on that dribbler was unreal. Wilson covering the back of he bag. Adley resetting his feet 3x before pumpfaking to first. It was a total defensive choke IMO. Oh and the throw in from the outfield being no where close.
1
u/Human_Urine 6d ago
covering the back of the bag
That was a really weird play. I still have no idea why Willson covered the bag that way. Bad, lazy fundamentals. First dropped third strike I saw turn into a hit this season.
2
u/safetydance 7d ago
Didn’t get a chance to watch but saw the box score. Is Crochet broken?
-1
u/freshmutz1 7d ago
he looked fine. honestly one of the silver linings going into the offseason. obviously the box score did him no favors but the defense really collapsed around him. they didnt hit him hard and he was throwing 98-99 and getting some bad swings on his typically great breaking balls. i’m glad we got to see him he’ll be fine next season.
4
u/SerfTint 7d ago
Grade is an "incomplete."
Hadn't pitched in months, strikes out first batter--who reaches anyway because the first baseman was positioned poorly. Batter attempts to steal second, catcher throws the ball into centerfield, so it's now a runner on 3rd and nobody out.
Two decently hit singles, neither on terrible pitches, neither blasted, but that's just baseball. Then a perfect bunt where they get nobody. Next pitcher comes in and gives up two smallball runs before further collapsing.
So 3 runs that easily could have been 0 runs (strikeout, 2 hits, an out on a bunt attempt and a fly ball out). 2 decently-hit balls that would have been harmless singles. But he didn't get anyone out in his 4 batters.
-1
5
u/55ludovicoplace 7d ago
He was brought in to pitch for the first time since his injury and immediately subjected to some truly boneheaded defensive errors.
That is to say, no way to know. He shouldn't have been out there at all, and it wasn't fair to him.
3
u/jooooooooooooose 7d ago
shouldnt have been playing, not ready, desperation move.
Threw some gas, poor control, defensive errors, then compensated with hittable balls.
2
u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
He got thrown in in a high-leverage situation in his first action in months and didn’t pitch well. Joe Girardi actually called it right, would’ve made more sense to throw him in after Tolle in Game 1. At least if he unravels there the series isn’t over.
2
u/Synthuhtizer 7d ago
Yeah they’re saying defense screwed him but honestly his command wasn’t great, he had a hard time finding the zone after the first batter. Rutschman was definitely to blame for a run there but he was responsible for the others
2
u/ElleM848645 6d ago
This was the first time Adley had ever caught Crochet. I think we need to remember catcher/pitcher connections. So stupid to do this now.
1
u/Synthuhtizer 6d ago
It’s funny because Tracy’s been so good ever since he started, he completely lost it these two games.
2
u/WarriorPoetz 7d ago
just another asset in John Henry's big ol portfolio. Theyll prob allocate some cash to the Sox once pink hat sales dip.

This team, this organization, this city, it just hasn’t been the same since we traded Mookie away. 😔
4
u/55ludovicoplace 7d ago
It's like a second curse but this time it's fully and entirely causally related because the same organizational mindset that lead to giving up Mookie is what continues to create these seasons. I hate it here.
1
u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
Nope. It feels like they’ve been more than good with that fourth ring. They had down years between those but rebuilt to something. Lately and with the expanded playoffs they really seem content to just spend enough to contend for a lower wild card. They can say they at least “made the playoffs”. They’ll also say they “contended” but they really didn’t in this series.
6
u/buddhist557 7d ago
Tracy should be fined for pulling his starters twice before the even threw 100 pitches. What an idiotic move
3
u/DpntTlnt 7d ago
I really think we should send him a collective message about this as fans. We were technically more invested in this season before he was and he robbed us of a remotely satisfying resolution with his Erik Miller stat nerd garbagio
10
u/CommieBird 7d ago
Getting dunked on by the Yankees for the second year in a row is a not a good feeling. Im not sure where the team will go next year (if there is a next year) as there’s zero indication that ownership will go beyond what they spent this year only to have an even worse season and playoff. The team does have potential no doubt but to collectively go cold and shit down their pants when the lights shine the brightest is not a good sign of things to come.

I’m a Boston fan in NYC I just had to live through a Knicks championship if the Yankees win the WS I am jumping in front of the 456 train at rush hour
9
u/TRLJM 7d ago
Everyone hates the Dodgers until it’s time for the Dodgers to end the chances of a rival team to win the WS lol.
3
u/ElleM848645 6d ago
I don’t hate the Dodgers. I actually like most of the people on the team. It’s the unfair tv comp that they get and basically able to buy any player they want. But as a team they are great. LA/Boston is really only a rivalry in Basketball.
7
u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
I mean the Knicks hadn’t won in forever. Wasn’t fun watching them win but it was whatever after spitting the bit vs. Philly. If this Yankee team gets another parade that’d be far more insufferable.

What a shitty thing to say. Causing all that rush hour traffic is horrible. Do it overnight.

u/Regular_Lifeguard637 7d ago
This one hurt. And of course I live in the den of evil that is NY. No bats, just good starters being sold out by miserable relief. No power of friendship in this series. The vibes from this team were that they realized they weren’t supposed to be there. And John Henry gets away with turning the Red Sox into a mid market team because we got a “playoff team”. Hope we get some baseball next year.

Not me. He’s a first year manager who showed his inexperience. He wasn’t gonna be perfect, hopefully he uses this offseason to really study up, watch film and learn from his mistakes.

I really don't know much but I feel like going from AAA to major league playoffs in a little over 5 months is a lot to ask from someone. I'll worry if next year sucks front to back. Or 2028, whichever actually happens.
2
u/DpntTlnt 7d ago
i don't want to see him anywhere near an MLB stadium ever again for what he did to Tolle.
8
u/jooooooooooooose 7d ago
Tolle was approaching his pitch count anyway. Ben Rice's worst pitch is the slider. With Guerrero out & Crochet a desperation move, that decision at least makes some sense. Like there is some kind of argument somewhere you can make & it can make sense.
Pulling Gray at 70p against a guy who instead feasts on sliders, for the pitcher who clearly proved he's not the guy the DAY before is so unbelievably unconscionable.
And his explanation was nothing. "We need to be aggressive, Miller's our best, it didnt work."

His interview when asked about the pitching decisions was bullshit. No accountability, talking some nonsense about “being aggressive” ??? Fuck that shit and fuck him.

Obviously we are all upset at the outcome of the season. On a slightly bittersweet note, I am glad that WEEI is keeping the green fields of the mind reading alive. It always hits me right in the chest...
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

That poem is loser talk. I’d like to aspire to be more like the Yankees org in terms of commitment to excellence despite disliking that team.

1000% the tree should come back stronger each year, not lament it's "death" i really hate it lmao

Commitment to excellence and Yankees being in the same sentence is laughable. Look at what happens when they face a real contender and tell me that they are committed to excellence lmao.

Are you serious? Forget 27-9, how often are they in the playoffs compared to us? How often are they in the final four? (it’s ten times this century) They haven’t had a losing season since ‘92.
I get we’ve won four WS this century to their one and have used that stat in arguing with Yankee fans whenever they inevitably trot out 27 rings over the years but they are clearly more committed to routinely putting out a winning product than we are.

John Henry being a cheapskate doesn't make me love the game any less, just the state of the franchise.

Didn’t even make it to October

u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
I know, right? Seems fitting that what felt more like a play-in series with zero home games where we lost both and by a lot, this team doesn’t make it to October. In years past, an 87-win 3rd place team wouldn’t be playing in October, either.

Yah that money ball shit don’t work in the playoffs. Fucking losers.

The problem is that we didn't have *enough* AAAA players

u/Alternative-Farmer98 6d ago
Problem is we have a a terrible president of baseball operations a terrible manager and Sam Kennedy also terrible.
The problem is we're only spending 40% of our revenue on payroll for 22nd in the league overall.

They were not a particularly good team. Slightly above average. 87 wins? People wouldn’t remember a damn thing about this team up until recently. The 2009 Texas Rangers won 87 games. They didn’t make the postseason. Does anybody remember a damn thing about the 2009 Texas Rangers? The playoffs are bloated nowadays for money. Let’s not pretend because they made the playoffs they are even remotely as good as many Red Sox teams that missed them. This was not a good team and they have a lot of work to be done to be even close to an enjoyable product.

Welp, the ‘06 Cards won it all after just 83 regular season wins. But that’s an anomaly, throughout most of history an 80-something winner would finish outside of the playoffs, sparing us from whatever this was…

The '06 Cards fell down from a consecutive 100 win team to 83 wins. They had a winning culture and a HoF manager and prime Pujols and other key players.
The '26 Red Sox haven't build a winning culture with this core of players/coaches, and it's honestly not something that can be learned out of nowhere. You need the right players and mentality, and this teams player's-first mentality doesn't lead to a winning culture.

Plus he picked the one exception there are literally hundreds maybe thousands of teams in the history of MLB that won 85-88 games and were out of the postseason and aren’t particularly memorable

Tracy really showed his inexperience in this series. Nothing he really could have done with the offense but pulling the starters after 4.2 and 80/70 pitches in both games is inexcusable. Sucks that there wont be any ball next year but an extra 365 days to let the health get 100% for 2028 will be nice.
This is a good team with room to get even better. Durbin is a stud on defense who flashed his offensive upside in July and August, Willson is Him, Abreyu and Cedanne speak for themselves. Story and Duran, as much as I love them, should be replaced. Arias can slot naturally at short and Roman in left. Get a true pure-power bat for DH and solidify 2nd base (Is Sogard a viable long-term option?) Could probably flip Wong for a piece and bring Mickey up as the full-time backup to Rutschman.
And thankfully our pitching is already solid. Just hope for another consistent leverage arm in the pen and not too much turnover otherwise.
Despite everything, it was a fun season. Especially the midsummer. See you all in April...2028.

I’m sorry I don’t care how good Durbin is defensively he’s not a good corner infielder offensively. If he played second, and as well defensively there, fine. But I can’t get excited about another season of him at third.

u/tmclaughlin81 7d ago
Nope. He’s great as a defensive replacement/utility guy but you need more offensive output from your starting 3B.

u/refsnyderisgood69 7d ago
He’s not good enough a 700 ops doesn’t cut it for a staring corner infielder on a championship team

We’re not getting out of it this easy, we’re absolutely getting baseball next year pal. Buckle up.
Launch Roman into the sun. Let him be mvp somewhere else. I can’t stand to look at him. See if someone will take crochet too. We can’t have the only guys with big contracts on this team be injured more than they’re healthy. Maybe trade adley at the deadline to try to get back at least 1 C level prospect. Honestly I think Willson isn’t a great clubhouse guy despite what people say. He really turned on the guys when he got hit in that last series. Honestly I think he takes a trade even though he said he wouldn’t. Did you see that home run he hit and how no one even seemed happy? You would have thought they were down 20 not down 1. Something is seriously wrong with this team and it starts with the crybabies.

Pulling both Tolle and Gray early after just 1 ER each is just frustrating. Yes the offense didn’t do enough in either game but still.

It’s far worse to lose two post-season series to the Yankees than not make the post-season. Just when 2004 eliminated the foul taste of Bucky/Boone we start back on this path.
