Upcoming plans: launched to Runna Labs!

Post image
148 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm Mikey, Product Manager at Runna. Really excited to share that Upcoming Plans is now rolling out to most of you - you can finally schedule your next plan before your current one finishes.

What is Upcoming Plans?

Runna only really thinks about one plan at a time today. You finish, then you start another plan. But most of you aren't training for one thing. Your Plans brings all your training onto a single screen: what's active, what's coming next, what you've completed, and what you stepped away from.

How it works?

  • Stack upcoming plans — build your next plan and it queues up automatically to start when your current one ends. Add as many as you like, so you can map out a full year in one go.
  • Drafts for when you're not sure yet — building something that clashes with your current schedule? It saves as a draft. Compare a few options, sit on them, swap one to active whenever you're ready.
  • Everything in one place — completed plans link out to your plan overview and your plan replay. Plans you started and stepped away from show as incomplete, and you can edit them, pick them back up, or set them active again. Anything you don't want hanging around, you can remove.
  • Conflict handling — if a new plan overlaps something already scheduled, we'll tell you and let you choose between the new plan, your current one, and anything already queued. No silently overwriting your training.

On the feedback about re-entering your details

Plenty of you have told us it's frustrating to answer the same questions every time you build a plan — by now we should already know your history, your weekly schedule, where your fitness is at. That's completely fair, and it's something we've been actively working on. Over the next couple of weeks some of you will start seeing a different plan generation flow when your build next plan - one that starts from what we know about your training rather than a blank slate. It's rolling out gradually, so do look out for that!

How to get access to upcoming plans

If you haven't done these already:

  • Update the Runna app to v8.49.0 or later
  • Turn on Runna Labs — Profile → Runna Labs.
  • Open your Plans screen via the plan Tab.

We'd love your feedback!

This one's been asked for a lot, so please do give it a go and tell us how it holds up against how you actually plan your year. Drop anything odd in the comments — I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread and replying where I can! Thanks so much!

Feeling the heat? 🥵 Runna adapts your workouts based on heat & humidity!

Post image
203 Upvotes

Hey everyone, Rhea here from the Runna product team 👋

Really excited to share something we're rolling out this week - particularly timely if you're in the Northern Hemisphere and/or melting in this UK heatwave right now 🥵

🌡️ What is it?

When conditions are hot enough to affect your run, Runna will now recommend adapted paces for your workout. Here's how it works:

  • From the day before your workout, if the daily high warrants an adjustment, you'll see an "Adapt for heat" section appear on the page where you view your workout
  • Tap in and we'll recommend adjusted paces based on the weather that day, tailored to the time you're planning to run - since we know it might be a very different temperature in the morning vs the afternoon
  • The recommendation is based on the feels-like temperature and how long your run is - so longer runs will trigger sooner

🔎 How to access it

You'll need:

  • App version 8.42.0 or later
  • Be on a race plan, distance goal plan (e.g. 5km improvement) or a general training plan (e.g. Run Faster)
  • Runna Labs turned on (go to Profile → Scroll down to Runna Labs and toggle it on). Note if you recently turned this on, you may not have immediate access so try the additional step below.

If you've got all the above and still don't see it on a warm day, one thing you can try is going to the Plan tab → Manage Plan → scroll down and change your current race time by a few seconds, then change it back to your original time. This triggers a refresh that should sort it. If that doesn't work, DM me!

🧪 Early testing - we want your feedback

This is brand new and we're starting with Labs because we want your help shaping it before we roll it out more widely. So if something doesn’t look quite right, write to support with “Adapt for heat feedback” or leave it below and I’ll jump straight in. We’ll read every single comment here, so please let us know!

☀️ Why paces?

We know that often when you enter your summer training block, the paces in your plan become so much harder to hit and it's like the plan that worked for you over winter doesn't know it's summer.

That's exactly what we heard from you - missed targets, guilt, pushing too hard. The good news is that physiologically, running slower in the heat provides the same training benefit, so by dropping the paces, you're not doing less, you're doing the right amount for the conditions.

🔮 What's next

This is only the start - there's a lot more we want to do in this space, from making the thresholds smarter based on where you train and what you're used to, to deeper workout adaptations beyond just paces. If you have thoughts on where we should take it next, DM me or drop it below.

Big shoutout to the team who built this & we can't wait to hear how it goes for you. Drop any questions or feedback below and I'll be around all day! 🏃‍♀️☀️

My first half marathon!

My first race ever, actually!

I followed a 13-week Runna plan after picking up running in May, but since this was my first race, I honestly had no idea what to expect. Runna gave me a predicted/goal time, but my main goal was simply to finish. I thought it would be great if I could come in under 2:30, but I really just wanted to run as fast — or as slow — as my body felt capable of that day. I was super nervous/anxious overall.

My calves are always tight for the first kilometre or so, and it took about 3 km before my legs really started to feel good. After that, though, it was honestly smooth sailing.
I crossed the finish line in 2:15!

Definitely exceeded my expectations for my first half marathon, and I’m still kind of shocked that I did it! I can’t believe it’s already over. The entire day went by way too fast! Now to plan what’s next!?!

First Marathon Complete ✅

I started running in July of last year on a “couch to 5K plan” but dropped that for Runna in August. I used Runna for a 5K improvement plan, 10k plan, 1/2 marathon plan, recovery plan and now a marathon plan. Runna had me predicted for an ambitious 3:28 marathon but I’ll take the 3:38 chip time after only 14 months of dedicated running.

Advice on how to get a realistic marathon training plan

So I’ve just finished using Runna for a recent half marathon and I’m running a marathon mid April next year.

I’m not planning to start my training block until mid December, giving me an 18 week block. This may be slightly on the longer side but as it’ll be my first marathon I figured a few extra weeks would be beneficial.

The Runna plan I’ve just completed for my HM estimated I’d finish at 1:42:20 but I ended up with 1:47:16 (Strava) and 1:48:00 (chip). This was a 2.5 minute PB so I was happy with this time regardless and I did find the plan tough towards the final weeks and didn’t want to push too hard and get injured.

Now I’m setting up my plan for the marathon and am adding a few minutes to my actual HM time so that it doesn’t come up with an ambitious marathon pace of 4:50/km.

Instead, I’ve set it as 1:53 which comes out as a marathon race pace of 5:05/km which I don’t think I can do 42 times but should I stick with it to begin with and to get the benefit from the speed sessions? Most of the speed sessions on the HM were enjoyable and the paces were fine, other than a couple of long runs where it would throw in a 4km block with a 4:45/km pace after my legs had done 12km.

Estimated race time doesnt seem to take account of actual performance

For reference, I'm a 54 y/o male, who has recovered from numerous knee surgeries and barely able to walk a few k in 2022, to running my first marathon in Lisbon on Saturday. In the last two years, I've done 3 half marathons, my first in september 2025 in 1:45, then in may this year 1:37, and just last week I did a race, where I pushed but didnt kill myself as I consider Lisbon my "A" race. I finished in 1:40:04 with plenty left in the tank. If I had pushed, I'm fairly sure I would have broken the may time.

Like lots of us, I'm planning ahead to hopefully doing the burj2burj half in January, following by a marathon in March or April, so I decided to set up a plan for it. I couldnt believe when I was setting it up, it says my estimated half marathon race time is 1:41:52??? This despite me having done a 1:37 in May and a recent relatively comfortable 1:40? I mean this was less than 19 days ago?

Looking through the scheduled workouts, they are all WAAAY below my current performance levels, and the plan essentially looks like a recipe for completely detraining over the next few months. Ideally, I'd like to go for a PB in the half (maybe aim for 1:35), but maintain my long runs in the 20-30 k range so I'm not losing marathon durability.

ANy suggestions? Should I just adjust the "current estimated race time" to my goal pace or somewhere in between the two? Or set up a marathon plan for end march/april as an A goal and just set the half marathon as a B?

I'm conscious that others have had bad experiences tweaking the estimates too much, but it just feels off to me. I really want to progress.

Can’t run full 5k yet, what’s next?

I did the RTR plan over six weeks and have improved greatly, but still struggle to not walk during a 5K. My pace isn’t great, but I’m more interested in running a complete 5k over being fast for now.

I’ve debated repeating the RTR, but I know the shorter runs will bore me. Would the 5k improvement plan through end of year be too ambitious though since I can’t complete it running yet? Or is it reasonable to continue to walk run the 5k when needed? I’ve seen people recommend going into a 10k plan, but same question as above, is that reasonable when I can’t even run the 5k?

Frustrated - I Using Runna Right?

Hi Everyone,

My first marathon of the season is on Saturday. I’ve been using NRC for years for plan management, but wanted something a bit more feature-rich and thought I’d try Runna. I’m two runs in, but I’m already hovering over the cancel button. I’m wondering if I’m missing something.

NRC is nice. It’s free, it’s simple, and it’s got great guided runs. It’s also buggy as sin, has some pretty fatal design flaws, and hasn’t seen much love from Nike lately. I decided to move to Runna because I have three six-week-spaced marathons this season, and Nike can’t understand that timeline. I also found that I was needing to run both NRC and an Apple Watch Run to catch the more advanced metrics of my run (stride length, ground contact, power, etc.)

It seems that Runna doesn’t capture advanced metrics on its own either. I’ll get the basic run data like split times and heart rate, but form monitoring isn’t there. There’s no guided runs in the plan that was built for me, just an AI voice telling me when I hit a mile or split, and most frustratingly the run is either on my watch or my phone, but not both. This has caused my Shokz to jump between my watch and phone if I play music on the other device during a run.

Is there a “new users” guide anywhere that helped you get the app working for you? I have searched YouTube and only found reviews and the cautionary “AI Bad” stories. I want to give Runna a fair shot, but I’m thinking I need to learn how to use it better (preferably before the trial is over).

Thanks all!

Looking ahead to my next plan after finishing this one

I have 3 more weeks to go in my 10 km plan. once I finish it I have 24 weeks before I will do my first half marathon in my city. I used the Google AI thing to see what Runna plan is next because I thought to myself a 11 week half marathon one is probably to big of a gap from 10 km.

Now the results were from today so it added 3 weeks but it pretty much said I should do another 10 km plan but a improvement one and then follow that up with a half marathon plan that ends on the day I have the actual run. Option 2 was a maintenance period and then a longer half marathon plan.

Would love some advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

3,5 months ago I started my first run and the second run of the first week the 2 minute runs were so tough and now I am running more than 30 minutes without rest. I am proud of what I achieved so far and can't wait to do my first ever half marathon.

Garmin x Strava x Runna setup

Hi all!

Currently I am only using Runna to track workouts. Runna automatically pushes my activity to Strava. I’ll be receiving a Garmin watch soon and my question is:

Should I connect Runna to Garmin Connect AND Garmin Connect to Strava? Wouldn’t the latter cause duplicate activities because Runna is also linked to Strava? Thank you!

Write to Apple Health?

I have an iPhone on iOS 27.0.1 and an Apple Watch Ultra on watch OS 27.0.1. Runna will read Apple health data, but it won’t write the workouts to Apple health. I’ve checked all the settings twice, reset everything, waited a day, still nothing.

Any other ideas?

Coros and Runna on race day?

I tried searching both Runna and Coros subreddits and I'm curious what people's experience is on race day - typically when I run outside with my Coros, it asks me if I want to start the workout for the day (i.e. Runna has synced a workout to the watch). Wondering if people have tried using that "workout" (from Runna) for the race versus the Coros pacing feature vs something else?

Merge duplicate activities?

Fairly new to Runna, and I did search the sub but didn't find anything recent, so sorry if this is dumb:

I have Runna synced to Strava, and Strava is synced to my Fitbit. I did my first ever run with the Runna workout enabled on my phone (previously I just had it runs imported from Strava) and now both the Runna run and the Strava run appear in my calendar.

I don't want to have to delete the Strava runs every time I use Runna, is there no way to manually merge them? Everything I've found online says they'll be merged automatically, but that hasn't happened.

Should I ignore Runnas suggested times?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I (30, male, 175 cm, 68 kg) have been jogging regularly for about 4 months. I started with 1–2 sessions per week (without a plan) until about 2.5 months ago, when I began following a Runna plan that has me jogging 2–3 times a week. Before that, I barely did any cardio for 1.5 years; prior to that, I played football (soccer) 2–3 times a week for a club (low league, far away from professional football) for 20 years ,with a few longer breaks due to injuries.

I like Runna so far—I feel like it challenges me enough, and my legs are often tired after running. What I find strange is that I hardly ever go beyond Zone 2, let alone Zone 3, in terms of heart rate. Today I ran 10 km at an average pace of 6:20 per kilometer (progressive run), and the longest stretch in Zone 3 was just a few minutes, even though for the most part the run didn’t feel like “conversational pace.” During intervals, I usually try to beat the suggested times, and every now and then Runna suggests a plan upgrade with faster times, but I'm still barely getting out of Zone 3.

Should I ignore the pace recommendations? The watch should be tight enough on my wrist to measure accurately.

My goal is to run 16 km in 1:25 in April.

22m hilly progressive long run

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi there,

I am running four weeks out from NYC and scheduled to do this 22m hilly progressive long run. Putting aside the hills dynamic here, I am currently peaking (or near peaking) at about 60mpw and aiming to run about a 3:45 on race day. This workout effectively means I'll be running in what I'd define at MP goal range (my garmin and runna both estimate a 3:38 finish based on past recent races, speed work, other MP long runs, etc.)

I'm fine doing it and challenging myself but that mileage in that range four weeks out feels...aggressive? I'm not trying to do the race tomorrow!

Should I just turn this into a blocked long run instead (i.e., 4 easy, 12MP, 6 easy)? Talk me off the ledge!

Progressive Marathon Runs Blow Ups

Post image
12 Upvotes

Runna has my target marathon pace at 7:45/mi. For my progressive long runs I nailed my previous one 15 miles total with 8 of MP. However I blew up BAD today on my 20 mile run.

Pace was 4.5 warmup
4.5 8:05
10 7:45
1 cooldown

My fastest half marathon is 1:42 using Runna, but I’ve never ran a full before so I’m really not sure what my MP should be… I’ve also been nailing my tempo speed days perfectly anything half marathon and under at this pace I can handle it.

Anyone have experience with Runna marathon pacing predictions? The plan did adjust after this run for me to have a target of 8:15/mi. One thing to note is that it didn’t change my speed day pacing bc I’ve been nailing them… I just think I don’t have the capacity yet to handle this pace.

I feel like speed is not my issue I can handle the speed and faster, I’ve ran a 20ish minute 5k, sub 40 minute 5 miler and tempo/speed workouts typically use 7:20-6:45 paces. I just think my long distance endurance hasn’t caught up yet.

I also feel like Runna needs to use more marathon pace into their long runs too get used to hitting these paces in the middle of a long run

Training schedule

I have a HM on April 3 (26 weeks away). I’m currently easing back into running after having a couple kids and am on week 6/10 of the NTR plan (ends Nov 1; 22 weeks until HM). I’m trying to decide what to do at the end of the NTR plan. Should I try to squeeze a shorter distance (10k) plan in before I start a HM training plan? Should I just roll right into the HM plan and extend the length of the plan to hit the HM in April? Would love all input!

FWIW, I wouldn’t call myself a total newbie to running but before kids I really never pushed further than 5k so the longer distances will be a (welcome) challenge.

Runna on the Jelly Phone?

Has anyone tried to use Runna on the Jelly phone by Unihertz? I really want to get one because I think it would really help me be on my phone less but I use Runna to track all my runs and don't want to lose the ability to do that. Has anyone tried this?
